Elder asks me why we quit... (Long)
by Odrade inin this thread i mentioned having a long chat with an elder last summer.
i didn't realize i had never posted the story, so here it is.. last summer (when i went to buy my new camera lens) i ran into one of my favorite jws at the photography shop.
he was buying a camera bag for his new dslr, and i saw him, went up and greeted him, hugged him.

Witnesses who take advantage of government programs
by skeeter1 ini'd like your take on jdubs who take advantage of government programs, despite having to lie to do it.. my mil & i were talking about some local jdubs who are on "welfare" and get "food stamps", despite having the means.
they ride around in new suvs, live in nice houses, but (obviously) fudge the numbers with social security in order to get benefits.. why do some jdubs take advantage of government?
is it becuase they feel "entitled" to cheat the great satan?

Yes I know several cases in the spanish congregations where they enjoy unemployment benefits. Or get very low paying jobs and work part time so that they can pioneer and live off welfare. Of course they move to areas like Georgia, where the cost of living is cheaper and they get better gov't housing. Of course they all feel it's part of Jah's blessing on them since they are regular pioneers.....I know MANY who so this.....

Honestly, Did You "Care" So Much About The "Friends"?
by minimus inthere are a lot of people who have complained of "no love" in their congregations.
i'm wondering if they gave of themselves, in reality, if they look back.
as an elder, i tried to "be there" when someone was in need but i must admit that i didn't always want to have to listen to a person's problems or a families' issues or some of the most ridiculous complaints, you could imagine.. were you really there for your brothers and sisters?

I was never friends with the most obvious cliques. My husband wasn't an elder or ms and I wasn't a pioneer so I mostly was friends with the down and trodden....I know they miss me because my mom tells me that they always ask about me. I know the teenage girls also ask about me and they visit me as well once in a while.

Do you shun Jw's now?
by AK - Jeff ini have gone thru phases with this.
i sometimes have forced jw's who shun me to speak, or be embarrassed if they don't.
then i let up on that as the hurting lessened over time.

I'm inactive so if I see someone I know by chance on the street I'll say hello. Now if I was df'ed I don't think I would make an effort to go say hi because I agree with R. Crusoe. It seems like it would just create an awkward situation.

Why do many people get religion, at the end or their lives?
by PEC inthe other day, i was talking to my brother and he tells me that my biological father, has started going back to the meetings and is now shunning him.
this man, now 77, has lived a life outside (sex, drugs and rock and roll) of the borg for at least 47 years.
he lives about a 6 hour drive from me.

my dad did similar..after being df'ed for like 25 years he started coming back and was reistated. I think that the fear of death thing is probably a huge factor. And also the community. I mean once you retire you're pretty much left without purpose so maybe that was a way for him to have some sort of network. He's such a weird srewy person he probably wouldn't fare to well outside the organization, but in he's just another one of the screwed up people in there.

Concrete Reasons for Being a JW (or member of any religion)
by Mrs. Witness inhere is a question i've been wanting to ask hubby: "why do you want to be a jw?
" and i don't want ethereal answers like "they have the truth" "everlasting life" and other such nonsensical ramblings.
i am not a member of any organized religion and i don't see the appeal.. can anyone answer the question with a concrete reason?.

Being a JW for a long time who really didn't believe much in Armageddon or paradise (or at least being worthy of it) I can say that I personally thought it would be a good place to bring up my kids considering most were living moral lives. I figured the association with others who had the same beliegs somehow would bring stability and structure to our family. So the current blessings outweighed by far the future ones..But then I noticed that there were nicer families who were moral and had values outside the organization. And all the kids inside the organiztion grew up to beliars and manipulators.....hmmm...that got me thinking pretty fast and that was ultimately the last straw...

Watching my 4 year old JW nephew today.....
by whyamihere ini have come to realize and thank whomever(maybe god...lol) for not raising my children into such a cult.. i'm sorry, he is a horrible, rotten brat from the dark pits of hell!
annoyingly screams all the time, his usual punishment is spanking(or beat as my sister calls it) - i avoid this because, 1) it's not my child.
2) spanking isn't the answer.

Yeah I feel the same way with my nephew. But he's 12 . I just make it super nice when he comes to my house and I make sure he knows I'll always be there for him no matter what....

I tried my best to be there. Of course I had some problems as well, but most of the young mothers and young girls always confided in me their problems. I always lent my house for gatherings and was pretty aware of needs for their children etc. In fact many times I would be surprised when my brother who was an elder did not know anything about certain issues people were having problems in their lives. My world was limited to the moms and kids and teenagers mostly though. So I reached out to the ones that I could get too. I'm sure I missed many though. Hey I had my own three kids as well....
