  Choosing Death (for born ins)

  You're right! There's something to be said about people who go against the current and choose this "death". I don't think we're weak at all.

  Some of us are here because we SAW things that are/were very wrong with the WT. Does it make us weak to question it? Better yet, why would God give us this intuitive ability to examine things and determine if it's good for us? If God really wanted robots, he would have created us that way. But it's in our nature to investigate things. Fear of examining things can be a powerful weapon against the weak-minded.

  We are not the weak ones, they are. They, the JW's, who toil day and night to please their invisible Governing Body (most don't even know who they are or how many there are). They think that by obeying them they will have life.

  how did we cope as kids?....to feel less freakish?....i think i...

  decided humor was the answer........i am not a looker and have been described by one here as lookin very "normal".....and i took that as a huge compliment......but i learned early on.....at least by third grade.......that those around me liked to laugh, and that if i made them do it.......it made me feel good..."normal" maybe.......anyhoo........i have done some stand-up comedy and had fun with it (as in i did not bomb)........and written more material than i have ever used..........i think if i could have any job it would be letterman's........but would be happy just to write for him, conan, or snl..........so what did you do or not do to feel more normal as a jw kid?........i also made valentine cards and did the pledge!

  I tried different things in order to try to cope with being a JW. It sucked cuz I grew up in a relatively small town and year after year I'd see the same kids and they all mostly knew I was a JW. Some made fun, others didn't care. The ones that made fun of me made me have an even lower self-esteem.

  I would take theatre in Junior high and High school. Being someone else always seemed to help a little bit. Then I immersed myself in video games at home.

  I don't think I'll ever fully recover, even though I'm out. There's always just a tinge of JWism inside that can be hard to extinguish.

  Damn mind control.

  Did you like the name "Jehovah's Witnesses"?

  or did you wish the religion had a more mainstream name?

  i can remember a "worldly" schoolmate telling me he wouldn't object to the religion so much if the name didn't sound so weird..

  Exactly!! Growing up in a small town and going to school with the same kids year in/year out, I had to put up with being made fun of all the time! Sittin' outside the classrooms while everybody exchanged Valentine's/birthday parties/thanksgiving/christmas/etc, the "why don't you believe this?" questions, and a whole host of other problems.

  after sending my disfellowshipped sister-in-law a valentine's card last week, she sent me an email.

  imagine my surprise!

  after 15 years of being disfellowshipped, she told me that she reinstated one month ago.

  I faded because I still have family in. Thankfully, it has helped. I've been able to help two family members out, and there's still work to be done. If the day comes that the elders DF me (they haven't stopped by in over 6 months, but the next time they do, I'll be ready), then I will have to face the shunning. But in no way is that going to slow me down. People deserve to know if the building is on fire.

  Way back when...leeches and blood..the GB/BORG take....

  do you guys remember when medical scientists, back in the 1970s were figuring out how to successfully re-attach severed body parts, found that when leeches were placed on the reattached parts it dramatically improved the "take..." ....so, much so that it was hailed as significant breakthrough?.

  of course the kill-joys-ers in brooklyn had to weigh in on a topic they were ill equipped to handle and they declared something to the effect that...'in the light of the biblical prohibitions on the proper use of blood, it would be wrong for a christian to allow leeches to "feed" on their blood...even if it was part of a medical procedure...".

  this was one of the many things that ate (lol...no freudian slip there...) at me at me while i was still a "good" dub.

  Actually, if my memory serves me right, there were a few Golden Age articles that taught that Satan actually "created" mosquitos and other nuisances. Pretty bizarre.

  First century governing body?

  my anointed step dad always mentions about how the first century christians had a governing body also.

  where in the bible does it actually say that?

  to me governing body is just a dictatorship of men who think they are right and can control, no different than the governments....governing body set rules, and ultimately decide your future as far as i'm concerned.

  No such thing. The GB idea is centered on the scriptures found at Acts 15. A group of "older men" did get together to discuss things, but in no way did all "spiritual food" come from this location (no reference is made to a "centralized authority").

  If you get on the Freeminds.org website, someone put together an excellent article on the GB/FDS.

  A counting time question

  i was wondering, if a jw gets into a conversation say with 3 people for 30 minutes does the jw get to count an hour and half?

  or how does that work when it is not traditional fs?.

  i was thinking back to a friend who worked with a jw and they worked with their hands so it allowed much conversation at work.

  How it should be done and how it actually gets written down are two different things.

  You may have a zealous publisher who counts every minute or doesn't like to round up to the next hour when he has only done 45 minutes.

  On the other hand, you may have a lazy publisher who does 30 minutes of "witnessing" but rounds up to an hour (and this then depends on his conscience, because it may bother him that he lied).

  I guess what I'm trying to say is that it all depends on the individual on how they will be reporting their time.

  Has anyone here met or spoken to a Mexican JW?

  if so, has the subject of the mexican 'ban' or bribery issue been discussed?.

  i wonder what older mexican jw's thought about the situation they were in and whether they could see through the farce.. if any group of witnesses could have cause to doubt, it would be them but they seem to be increasing.. .

  has anyone here actually discussed this with someone who lived through this period of jwism?.

  Ah yes, the Mexican/Malawi issue.

  After reading COC, I started to work up the nerve to start asking my family members about this. I am of Mexican descent, though I was born here.

  When I gave a copy of COC in spanish to my aunt, who still lives near Mexico, she said she wasn't surprised about the Mexican brothers bribing the officials. She knows quite a few who were doing that back then. She doesn't see that the Malawi brothers suffered for nothing because of the stupid Governing Body. She can be so thick-skulled... She also doesn't see how bribing is evil. I am trying to get through to her, but she keeps stating that the men on the GB are just "imperfect" and are not to blame. Pisses me off...

  in my relationships and dealing with jehovah's witnesses over the past few years i have come to learn one thing, the belief of who jesus is is the centre of the problem.

  i was led to these verses after a couple of aging witnesses left my house after much debate, which once again proved fruitless :(.

  It is difficult for JW's to see this because they have been indoctrinated to believe that they should be seeking salvation from the Watchtower organization (referred to as "Jehovah's organization"). So hard have their hearts become, that when they read the scripture that says, "To whom shall we go away to?", they immediately think of the organization, and not the person of Jesus Christ.

  It's sad, but we cannot give up the battle.
