JW IQ's. Below average? (Includes SM anecdote.)
by Open mind inare dub bulbs just a little dimmer than the general population?
here's a little highlight from this week's local service meeting that prompts my question.. it's the annual, 20 minute, robotic hand-pumping session conducted by the secretary trying to get everyone all hyped/guilted up for this summer's district convention.
anyway, towards the end of the q&a, there's a paragraph that talks about offering a ride to the elderly/infirm ones in your congo.

When you have the type of audience where you have to every year explain how to reserve a hotel room, and "Don't barbecue grill in your hotel room" then yes, they are below average.

Are Witnesses really persecuted?
by Robert7 inyou know we hear it all the time.
witnesses are persecuted by satan, and this is one of the signs of the 'true religion'.
they love to quote wwii and the concentration camps, but really only 5,000 died versus 6 millions jews.

Can All Witnesses "Snap"? Or Not?
by metatron inone upon a time , joe witness stumbled onto an "apostate" internet site - and his curiosity got the better of him.
he couldn't stop .
reading and went thru a wrenchingly painful weekend in which his deeply held beliefs were shattered.

I would say no. I myself have looked at apostate sites a few times over the years, and they never phased me. If anything, they gave me 'proof' this was the truth. Of course I was going into it with blinders on. It took my own personal rational thinking to set myself free.
For everything true stated about 'the truth' on apostate sites, there is a pre-canned response for everything. For example:
- 'mind control' - it is repitition for emphasis. Loving provision from Jehovah.
- shunning - Protects the flock. Loving provision from Jehovah.
- No worldly association - Protects the flock. Loving provision from Jehovah.
- Changed doctrines - New light. Loving provision from Jehovah.
- etc etc etc
People can choose and force themselves to be closed minded. This is why not everyone will see the real light.

Ever encounter gypsies?
by Gregor inthere is quite large community of them in this area.
the more you get to know them or deal with them the less you like them.
what a strange and ugly culture.

I saw a great documentary from Kazakhstan that says Gypsy tears protects you from Aids.
Actually, the encyclopedia link below says under the section 'Little known facts about Gypsies' - "Gypsy tears protect against the A.I.D.S virus, as well as ward off other diseases".
If you read it on the internet, it has to be true.

This is an actual news article... Crazy... HAYDEN, Idaho — A man who believed he bore the "mark of the beast" used a circular saw to cut off one hand, then he cooked it in the microwave and called 911, authorities said. The man, in his mid-20s, was calm when Kootenai County sheriff's deputies arrived Saturday in this northern Idaho town. He was in protective custody in the mental health unit of Kootenai Medical Center. "It had been somewhat cooked by the time the deputy arrived," sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger said. "He put a tourniquet on his arm before, so he didn't bleed to death. That kind of mental illness is just sad." It was not immediately clear whether the man has a history of mental illness. Hospital spokeswoman Lisa Johnson would not say whether an attempt was made to reattach the hand, citing patient confidentiality. The Book of Revelation in the New Testament contains a passage in which an angel is quoted as saying: "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives his mark on the forehead or on the hand, he, too, will drink the wine of God's fury." The book of Matthew also contains the passage: "And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell." Wolfinger said he didn't know which hand was amputated.

"I've been blessed"
by changeling into me this is one the most nauseating sayings.
i hear it all the time.
"i'm sooo blessed, i got over that awful cold i had last week".. how are your kids?

My previous comment being said, this is not unique to the Witnesses. I think most religions are this way, and attribute too much to God, thinking he is controlling every day aspects of life.

This used to bug me too. When something good would happen, it was a blessing from Jehovah. People would pray for blessings from Jehovah (like drive home safe). So all positive things were from Jehovah, and not just thanking Jehovah (which is nothing wrong with that) but actually attributing the action as controlled directly by Jehovah. Then if something bad happens, it's "time and unforseen occurances". What a catch-all, never made sense.

Here is one example that showed me that you cannot trust (or at least blindly trust) the direction of the Society. I read about this example, and I printed the actual articles from the WT CDROM to be sure it was real, and it was true!
12/1/72 WT, page 734-736, Question From Readers - Says that Oral (and anal) sex among a married couple are serious wrongdoings and is a disfellowshippable offense.
Now imagine how many marital issues this created, and likely how many marriages were either broken up, or miserable. How many people got DF'd? Who knows. I've heard that this caused many problems...
Then the 2/15/78 WT, p30-32 QFR - Says that this policy is in "ABSENSE OF CLEAR SCRIPTUAL INSTRUCTION" and that it is not serious wrongdoing and not DF'able.
So the policy was in place, lives were disrupted or ruined, on something that has no scriptual backing.
There are many other examples where the Society created a policy then changed them later. You will see many in Crisis of Conscience. This taught me that I will NEVER blindly follow ANYTHING the Society says. If I or the family need blood, then we will. How horrible if a family member died due to refusing blood, and what if 5 years later a 'new light' says they are now ok because it's not 'eating' blood. I will never put my family at risk due to any WTS policies. There are way too many examples of ruined lived on policies that later were reversed.
