I equate porn with 'fast food' - it serves a purpose, satisfies you quickly, but never really fulfills, and shouldn't substitute for real food, good ingredients, cooked from start to finish.

Porn is .....Mostly Irrelevant
by metatron inthis is one of those things that can amaze you (well, me actually).
you are taught a relentless fear about porn and it gets demonized heavily - but what is the real result?.
most guys don't want a porn star for a wife and separate fantasy from reality in regard to interaction with the opposite sex.. maybe that's why religious types like witnesses demonize it so much: they are unable to distinguish fact from fantasy.. see:.

my dad exposed himself to me from the age of three until i left home at 18. my dad did lots of gross things but that is not the jest of this post.. one of the things my dad did that i clearly remember was exposing himself in the elevator at work to woman twice and he almost got fired for it.

I can relate to your post, not personally, but my best friend had a similar situation - not JWs. Her dad masturbated in front of her regularly and when her mum found out the solution was for my friend to go and live in a caravan at the bottom of the garden! Unbelievalbe, but true. She spent her teenage years in a frozen caravan - so that she wouldn't 'tempt' her father! She never wanted to involve the authorities, but she never got over the fact that her mum saw 'her' as the problem. I encouraged her to get counselling, which she did, and it helped greatly. Sadly, she died at only 38years of age and at her funeral her dad was crying and wailing. I wondered if his grief was over what he had done. I will never know. Unfortunatley it's not only the org. that keeps it hidden or attempts to put the blame on the victim.

As You've Gotten Older Have You Changed Your Thoughts On Marriage?
by minimus inmany witnesses got married at a young age (because they felt they had to).
you can't sin, right?.
some people get married and for years, are very happy.

My views have definately changed. I was married at 18, my hubbie was 22! There was a certain amount of pressure to marry, but it as also the done thing. Living together was called 'living in sin' - hardly how you would want to start out bringing up a family. Now the world has changed so much, and people can live together and make a commitment between themselves. Now I am separated, I wonder what was the point in being married - it doesn't stop people behaving badly.

prayer before eating
by stillin ini mentioned to an elder/friend the other day that it occurred to me that there really doesan't seem to be any scriptural precedent or mandate for the tradition of praying before we eat.
i said that jesus blessed the loaves and fishes when he performed that miracle, and he blessed the wine and bread at the last supper, but i couldn't think of any other example of it.
i also suggested that the tradition of praying before eating was probably rooted in giving thanks to the various gods of nature and the perception og god as being involved in the outcome of the harvest, and that, by that way of looking at it, we probably shouldn't pray before eating....silence..

Mrs Jones, the Rabbie Burrns 'Selkirk Grace' recited on Burns night it as follows:-
"Some hae meat and cannot eat
And some wad eat that want it
But we hae meat and we can eat
And sae the Lord be thankit"
Ok - now in English!
Some have meat and they can eat
Some cannot eat that want it
But we have meat and we can eat
So let the Lord be thanked
This grace usually covers, the believers and non- believers and doesn't really cause offence. Well not after a few whiskeys!!!

Why I wrote a novel
by JeffT inthis or something like it, will be the preface:.
in 1973, the year i graduated from college, i joined what sociologists now call a high control religion, what others would call a cult.
sixteen years later, my wife and i mailed a letter to the groups headquarters formally ending our relationship with them.

I hate the fact that JWs go ahead and give thanks even in the company of non believers - it is so insensitive. There is absolutley no need for it. I myself prefer Rabbie Burns Selkirk Grace - any Scots out there will know what I mean

Difference between "raised in the truth" and "converts" that are now X-JWs.
by Brocephus ini am noticing a difference..... "raised in's" seem to be a little more relaxed and better suited for their world after the kh.
"converts" seem to be a little disoriented.
maybe b/c they saw the truth as away out of this crazy world only to be massive dissapointed.

From my experience, born-ins are less able to cope. They literally have no connection with 'the world'. If you are a convert, you can at least go back to what was 'normal'. If you are a born-in, you go back to what is 'evil'. My uber JW ex MIL, has a warm side to her, she was not born-in. Her daughter, on the other hand, is way out there - not able to reason, totally unsympathetic etc. I see the difference in them, and so do my kids, as one being born-in and one being 'formed' out of the org.
