  hello all, i've been reading your site for a couple of years now, and have found, for the most part, it to be very helpful.

  i must say, at first i was very "scared" at what i might find, but contrary to what i grew up learning, there is a "wealth" of information outside of the watchtower organization.

  i haven't attended meetings for about two years now, and like many i've read about, have spent many hours researching, telling myself "i'm not wrong for searching", and doing more research.

  The sadest part about this thread, in my humple opinion, is that it appears to basically have nothing whatsoever to do with chronology. It seems to me that here we have a very sad situation in which a practicing Jehovahs Witness is desperately attempting to justify the basis for the Watchtower teachings. To his way of thinking the fact that the Society could be in error is something that cannot be allowed to enter his mind - the possibility just does not exist.

  The reason is quite simple: If this Jehovahs Witness (or any other) were ever to admit the simple fact that the Society holds to an incorrect interpretation of Scripture, particularly the very one upon which all their beliefs and teachings are based, their worlds would come to a sudden end. For them it is a matter of life and death - literally. I believe that this is precisely why the Governing Body are unable to correct something that started out as a simple misunderstanding and has had to be allowed to grow into a lie which must now continue forever.

  The fact that not a single Watchtower supporter has come to the aid of our struggling Witness in his attempt to justify an obviously wrong scriptural interpretation speaks volumes. The fact that it cannot be justified means that it is a topic that, for the majority of Witnesses, must be avoided.

  i have heard many urban myths associated with the watchtower society and its hapless adherents.

  i like the one where an "interested one" accepted the invitation to attend the memorial one year, and sat next to a "sister" who let the confused attendee use her bible to look up scriptures as they were presented.

  afterword, the "sister" walked the man up to the circuit overseer, who had delivered the talk that year, and introduced the dupe-filled "study" to the co. the co complimented the man on his spiritual interest and asked what impelled him to come up and talk to him.

  The only people to survive the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima were Jehovah's Witnesses. They were being held in an underground prison for refusing military service!

  This always brings two questions to mind. What abour the guards, they must have survived also, and how did they all survive the radiation when they came out?

  someone i know was given 'mankind's search for god' book.

  he read it because he thought it would be interesting to know about other religions.

  he told me that he soon realised that after so long in each chapter that explained a particular religion, the text started to become biased and sometimes patronizing against that religion.

  That is exactly what I was trying to imply in my post but I could not have explained it that well. My problem was that it took some years to see it ? perhaps because I had an untrained eye and was not looking for problems at that time.

  Pleasuredome was asking for the opinion of a worldly person ? which I was, so that was mine at the time.

  Mankinds search for God was the first Witness book I ever read and the most meaningful words in that book were these:

  Logic tells us that a correct conclusion can be deduced only from a correct premise. If one starts off with a faulty premise, it is unlikely that one will reach a sound conclusion.

  It was only years later that I realised the significance of these words and the fact that this was the very reason why this could not be "the truth".

  i live in an extended family of jehovah?s witnesses, consequently i am often asked why i "dont accept the truth".

  long ago i found that it was always best to keep my answer short, to the point and non-confrontational.

  those in a similar position to myself might find my usual response of interest.. all my family are aware that i did extended research into the watchtower religion at the time i studied with the witnesses.

Long ago I found that it was always best to keep my answer short, to the point and non-confrontational. Those in a similar position to myself might find my usual response of interest.

  All my family are aware that I did extended research into the Watchtower religion at the time I studied with the Witnesses. The fact that I was told that this was forbidden made me determined to find out what they were hiding, so they realise that I know things that perhaps others would not.

  I simply say to them that my research showed that the Witnesses had a belief system that was founded upon their own unique interpretation of the Bible. This, in turn, was based upon their own unique interpretation of Bible chronology. Since all available evidence points to the fact that their version of Bible chronology is completely inaccurate, this must lead to doubts about everything else connected with their interpretation of the Bible. Consequently this must lead to serious doubt about all of the religious teachings that are unique to them.

  I have never been asked to expand on this. However one of my more intelligent relatives did once say to me that he knew it wasn?t reality, but he just did not need me to destroy his dream world. I do know that if any of them were to apply the same level of intelligence, reasoning and logic to the "truth" that they have to apply to most other areas of their lives, they would never be able to remain "in it". I believe that most of them realise this also.

  I have an excellent relationship with my relatives because we have this understanding; I won?t give them facts that are unpalatable to them if they don?t try and convert me. It works well.

  My reasoning is in fact a bit less complicated. I have always found that the Jehovah?s Witnesses in my family felt that they were a very superior class of people who belonged to some sort of exclusive club. Everything and everyone that was not part of this club was unworthy of their attention, was evil and should be destroyed. Sometimes I would see little huddles of them whispering together and I would overhear them criticising the club or other members of it in an extremely hypercritical way. I realised a long time ago this was not for me and that I could never be a part of it.

  I have never found it necessary to conceal the fact that I am proud to have been a Freemason for over 30 years. I have mentuoned it in previous posts but it always gets me into hot water. It seems that anyone who has ever had any connection with the Watchtower Society (except Freemasons) has an all consuming hatred for Freemasons founded completely on ignorance.

  You cannot stop being a Freemason so any who join the dubs are still technically Fremasons.

  Incidently, in my thirty years I have never heard of anyone being asked to become a Freemason.

  That is the extent of my contribution to this thread (to avoid more personal attacks) but I just wanted to answer the question.

  anyway, basically i was stumbled by recent events in our hall... a respected pioneer sister tried to seduce my sister-in-law's husband.

  and when that didn't work she went after another friend's husband.

  Hi viewaskew and welcome to the board.

  I was once in exactly the same position as you and managed to get myself out of it. Ask your study conductor a simple question like " I have been reading the Encyclopedia Brittinica and they say that the Temple at Jerusalem was destroyed in 538 BCE not 607. Can you please provide me with a secular source that confirms the 607 date?"

  You will get all sorts of excuses as to why he cannot give you any secular source for 607. Appear to accept these feeble excuses because this is your way out.

  After a short time go back to the study conductor and say you feel that you would like to terminate the study because you do not feel that you will ever be able to get baptised. He will ask you why.

  Tell him that although you might be able to overlook the fact that some of your questions remain unanswered, your concience would never allow you to attempt to get others to believe things that you could not believe yourself. You do not believe that such a thing would be pleasing to God and in view of this you could nevert go out in service and therefore could never be baptised as a Jehovahs Witness.

  If they attempt to bully you into continuing with the study then you must appear very concerned that they are pressuring you to go against your concience and make this another reason as to why you wish to discontinue.The harder they push, the worse you can make them look.

  Try it. It worked for me and did not harm my relationship with my staunch J.W.wife in the slightest.

  The idea of perfection and living forever

  this past year i turned 30, my father in law is visiting and he's turning 62 tomorrow so i'm baking him a cake.

  i have been thinking about aging and how it seems very normal to me.

  if adam and eve sinned and no longer were going to live forever, how come there aren't plants and animals that were also living forever.

  If you want an hilarious few minutes just ask a JW for their take of living forever on "paradise erf".

  I?m sure that there must have been past threads on this explaining their visions. Things like cars running on hydrogen, building materials (plus everything else) just materialising whenever it is needed and old men coming out of the "memorial tombs" dressed in top hats and spats!

  Every JW seems to have their own take on what it will be like and every one is different. The only thing that stops it being painfully funny is that they quite sincerely believe everything they are telling you. You then realise how pathetic it all is.

  The British NHS........ What is your view?

  the nhs is a hot issue at present with the forthcoming uk elections pending in may, both main parties are trying to monopolise the issue of our health service.

  it is a unique service where faults of course can be found (as in the current news story) but having worked and given my best for the last 15 years in it, i feel proud of it.

  what experience do you/have you had of the nhs?

  The trouble with the British NHS is that it is now paying for things that it was never set up for, or intended to cover. I mean things like removing tattoos that somebody no longer wants and getting childless women pregnant. If it stuck to its original aims of providing primary health care and saving lives it would have money left over after providing the best service in the world.
