There are about fifty million different definitions of Christian and it seems as though small groups make up their own definitions as they go along so as not to seem like deviants.
Most mainstream Christians do not view Jehovah's Witnesses as Christian because JWs do not WORSHIP the Christ. They do not view him as God or part of the Trinity as does most of mainstream Christianity. However, another definition some use (even those outside of the JWs) believe that to be Christian means following the teachings or examples of Christ.
Now that, in my view, would still work except that JWs don't follow the teachings of Christ. They follow the teachings of the apostle Paul. If anything, that makes them Pauline Christians with more up to date doctrine and interpretations based on the WBTS.

Your success or failure in debating the flood issue depends on who you are talking to. If you are talking to an indoctrinated JW, you are going to fail whether he proves his point or not. Here is why.
Regarding the Flood story, there are only four possibilities.
1. It never happened but the story is allegorically used by God so that the people of that time period could understand him.
2. There was a flood, but it was regional but biblical writers used artistic license to achieve a greater effect and to tell a good story.
3. There was an earthwide flood and the story is to be taken literally.
4. It never happened and no deity had anything to do with any of it.
A JW takes option 3, that the story is to be taken as literal because that's what they are told to do by the WBTS. It doesn't matter if it is scientifically impossible. Jehovah makes all things possible. (What that means is--and the WBTS have SAID this--if science disputes with what THEY say, SCIENCE is wrong.) Therefore the argument is not winnable or even debatable with a JW. The JW can go as far as the Creation book allows them to run with the Flood story scientifically. But when you get to the point where the JW science falls apart, theism kicks in and fills the rest of the gaps. Have a hole that doesn't make sense? Jehovah can do anything! He can stop the earth from spinning for an entire day, why can't he flood the earth and get the DNA of every living animal on the ark?
Ideological totalism at its best.

The few Witnesses that I have spoken to about it don't have an opinion either way. His lyrics have toned down greatly and are no longer edgy. Further, he includes many more spiritual lyrics in some of his songs. Here is one example from the song "The Word".
What is this new exaltation
That I just can’t explain?
What are these new inspirations
That I can’t get out my brain?
How am I gonna sleep with this feeling
Rushing all through my veins?
Get up, come on let’s do something
Don’t you wanna go get saved?
The night is calling you to act
Act upon every urge
You can’t get no satisfaction
If you ain’t got the courage
I don’t know what you’re afraid of
I don’t know what you’ve heard
Get up, come on let’s do something
Don’t you wanna know the word?
Who’s gonna save us when them spiders get next to you?
Spinning their sticky webs around what you do
We gotta safeguard against forked tongue and the treachery of the wicked one
Get up, come on let’s do something
Don’t matter how far you have to
The truth has got to be told
Don’t matter how shiny your lips
They’ll never be streets of gold
They might try to get us crazy
Cuz they don’t know what I’ve heard
We got this new exaltation
I’m talking about the word
Who’s gonna save us when them spiders get next to you?
Spinning their sticky webs around what you do
We gotta safeguard against forked tongue and the treachery of the wicked one
Get up, come on let’s do somethingIn addition, see the lyrics from "Get On the Boat":
Look outside Ur window
Tell me now what U c
Coming up the mountain
4 a new philosophy
Every single color
Every race and ever creed
Lookin' 4 the truth ya'll
That's gonna set somebody free
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
All across the nation
People doing what they can
2 avoid the tribulation
That will b great throughout the land
Everything in darkness
Must come out in2 the light
When we love each other
That's the only way that's gonna be right
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
Good god!
Say it again
Bridge!
We were meant 2 live 2gether
Underneath the sun
Eye can't think of nothing better
Don't U wanna come?
Get on the boat
Nevermind what time it is
The party's just begun
No te alejes de este momento de inspiracion
U can let Ur hair down
Let the music move Ur feet
Panamama bring the drama
Dancin' 2 the beat
Maceo!
What's the harm in listening 2 the hopeful words we say
If it moves Ur heart U know U better get in without delay
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
Dance to the beat... Ray, Ray, Ray
Leadline- horns, hit me now
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
We were meant 2 live 2gether
Underneath the sun
Eye can't think of nothing better
Don't U wanna come?
Get on the boat
Ooh Yea
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
Every color, every creed
C'mon c'mon
Come with me
Hallellujiah!
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
Get on the boat
Get on the boat, people
Get on the boat now
We got room 4 a hundred more
Good lord
Lead line, lead line
Can't stand it
Keep it going, keep it goingAs you can see, these are clearly based on WBTS doctrine, though the non-JW just might think he's just being spiritual. You can see how he may have alienated most of his fan base with these tame, spiritual lyrics. The exciting Prince who would perform on stage with his butt cheeks hanging out is gone.

Do you know any Witnesses who are heavily into alternative medicine? I know a few. Two anti-doctor Witnesses I am very familiar with are my mother-in-law and my used-to-be best friend's aunt. By alternative medicine I mean holistic healing, herbal treatments, etc. These people don't go to regular doctors but go to self-proclaimed specialists (I call them shamans) who tell them what foods and plants to eat that will make them all better. Medicine is evil (they will tell you).
There is this shaman, supposedly, that has a magical machine. You can be hooked up (anal probe??) to this machine and it will tell you everything, EVERYTHING that is wrong with you, whether you are showing any obvious symptoms or not. It can tell you normal things like whether your blood pressure is too high, but it can also tell you if you have any other ailments that are not visible.
My wife half believes in them, mostly due to her mothers second-hand tales of miracles. Personally, I think it's all placebo effect. The people BELIEVE that the magical ointments are working and so therefore they do. Power of suggestion. Possibly there wasn't anything wrong to begin with. There was a woman who had pancreatic cancer. Her doctor told her she had six months to live. She started going to one of the witch doctors and she lived eighteen months beyond that. See, it works! We have no way to know that if she had NOT gone to the mystical shaman whether she would have survived anyway.
My mother believes even differently. She is more on a Tom Cruise level. She pretty much believes that even the shaman's are lame and that, especially with dealing with mental problems, you can overcome all of that stuff completely with just a little bit of therapy (never mind that she has a sister that has been institutionalized for the past fifteen years, therapy be damned).
I bring this up now because, as I have said in another topic, my son is having serious behavioral/mental issues and we have appointment for him to see a child specialist. My wife has loose lips and she is telling people that he is having these problems (before any professional has even attempted to diagnosed them). So now all of these different people are trying to get my wife to try all of these different things. Nobody tells me anything because I am sure they know I don't believe in mumbo jumbo. I know that modern medicine is not perfect and that pharmaceutical companies are screwing up the bodies and minds of alot of people, but at least I can verify that the doctors that prescribe these medications have at least been to school (yay for higher education!). These other people have certificates printed from dot matrix printers in the 1980s.

My wife says that I am anti-elder.
Once my wife ratted me out to the elders because I got angry a couple of times during our earlier years of marriage and used a couple of "cuss" words. She told me that if I didn't go to the elders and tell them then she would.
She gave me like a week or so and I didn't do it so she went. Next thing I know they were sitting us down in the "B school" so I could explain my wrongful behavior. What's funny about all that is this.
Elder A's wife left him a couple of months later for a WOMAN. He would get married a couple of years later and then beat his new wife. They'd be separated shortly afterward.
Elder B's wife was a stumbling alcoholic and his daughter would later get disfellowshipped for giving people blow jobs. Elder B would leave the congregation because he felt that the disfellowshipping was WRONG because it happened a year before it was discovered and had passed some imaginary statute of limitations.
Later we would receive a shepherding call from two different elders. (Elder's C and D). I was informed by Elder C that I was a liar because I was not having a family study regularly enough and that I lied about my marriage vows.
Found out later that Elder C had been disfellowshipped in the past for cheating on his wife and so had elder D. Both Elder C and D had daughters who fornicated and became pregnant.
In the last congregation we were in, one of the more "popular" elders had many problems. He flirted and heavily openly with sisters, some of whom were married. He had unscrupulous business practices (he cheated people) and then when he was discovered he would change congregations. He would borrow hundreds of thousands of dollars from other well to do brothers and never pay them back. His last act at that congregation was to leave his wife of some twenty-five years for some younger office girl. His son (a ministerial servant) once cussed out his mother. (Witness or not, how does a father let a son cuss out his wife?)
These are just a few of my more recent experiences with the elder body. My wife thinks that these people are legitimately spirit appointed people provided for our help. When I say that I don't need their help she thinks I am being anti-elder and anti-Organization. Her defense is that they are imperfect. My response, in question form, is: Then what makes them different from me? I can look up material in the Watchtower library CD just like they can.

Why do they Continue to Request for more Bethel Workers?
by gumby inat the last district assembly, each time they gave the announcments they said, "if anyone would like to sign up for bethel service, go to the attenance desk".. they have just released over 1100 workers and they are asking for more volunteers?
anyone else had that question?
are there any here who were dismissed from bethel just recently and know the answer?

Which jogs my memory...wasn't there a lawsuit where a Bethel sister sued the WTS for workman's comp after she was hurt while performing a duty that was tied to her relationship with the organization? The Society tried to claim that she was a volunteer, not an emloyee so the laws didn't apply but the courts ruled in her favor...if I remember correctly.
If that is, in fact, true then they are truly evil. Walmart has nothing on them.

Holiday questions
by searchingforfriends ini have been thinking about some things, and realized i can't remember ever being given good reasons for not celebrating certain holidays... i was wondering if anyone here can help out with this.
jw's like to complain about origins of certain holidays and have come up with a bunch of reasons why they are bad, (such as birthday's and christmas) but there are others that all i've ever heard is just not to take part, or that jehovah doesn't like it.
even though i was "raised in the truth" i can't remember ever hearing why.....

Bible’sViewThe
The Bible admonishes Christians to "walk decently, not in revelries and drunken bouts." (Romans 13:12-14; Galatians 5:19-21; 1 Peter 4:3) Since New Year’s festivities are often characterized by the very excesses that the Bible condemns, Christians do not participate in them. This does not mean that Christians are killjoys. On the contrary, they know that the Bible repeatedly tells worshipers of the true God to rejoice—and that for a number of reasons. (Deuteronomy 26:10, 11; Psalm 32:11; Proverbs 5:15-19; Ecclesiastes 3:22; 11:9) The Bible also acknowledges that food and drink often accompany rejoicing.—Psalm 104:15; Ecclesiastes 9:7a.
As we have seen, however, New Year’s celebrations are rooted in pagan customs. False worship is unclean and detestable in the eyes of Jehovah God, and Christians reject practices that have such origins. (Deuteronomy 18:9-12; Ezekiel 22:3, 4) The apostle Paul wrote: "What fellowship do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what sharing does light have with darkness? Further, what harmony is there between Christ and Belial?" For good reason, Paul added: "Quit touching the unclean thing."—2 Corinthians 6:14-17a.
Christians also realize that taking part in superstitious rituals does not guarantee happiness and prosperity—especially since participating in such festivities can result in God’s disfavor. (Ecclesiastes 9:11; Isaiah 65:11, 12) Furthermore, the Bible admonishes Christians to be moderate and self-controlled in their conduct. (1 Timothy 3:2, 11) Clearly, it would be improper for one who professes to follow Christ’s teachings to be part of a celebration that is characterized by riotous excess.
As eye-catching and appealing to the senses as New Year’s festivities may be, the Bible tells us to "quit touching the unclean thing" and to "cleanse ourselves of every defilement of flesh and spirit." To those who comply, Jehovah extends the heartwarming guarantee: "I will take you in. . . . I shall be a father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to me." (2 Corinthians 6:17b–7:1) Indeed, he promises eternal blessings and prosperity to those who are loyal to him.—Psalm 37:18, 28

The reasons for not celebrating Christmas and Halloween are logical and can be easily explained if you are going to stick with their pagan roots.
When explaining Mother's Day and Father's Day, the Society really reaches on tying them to paganism.
Birthdays have no legitimate explanation at all. The basis is that they are mentioned (in passing) twice in the Bible and on those two occasions something bad happened (oh no!). So if they had mentioned the color red JW's would be disfellowshipped for wearing red in their ties or shoes.
Never mind that pagans also used wedding rings but JWs think those are okay.
They just make up rules (like the Pharisees and Sadducees they are) as they go along.
