I just had to ask about this comment WTWizard made on this thread: "You will be afraid of the Christmas decorations" I actually THOUGHT i was noticing this, with a JW friend of the fam, that comes over a lot. But i put it out of my mind, because i thought, no , that can't be true. I know they don't celebrate Christmas, but i just can't believe he doesn't want to be in the most decorated room with the tree. I'm just imagining that......

Some people may prefer to send a written thank you note, which will obviously take longer to get there, than a PM. :)

Why is it important for us to keep telling our stories
by Lady Lee ini realize not everyone here was sexually abused while they were children in the wts.
but many of us were victims.
but many more of us were victims of other kinds of abuse; physical, emotional and definitely spiritual abuse.

Ode To JWD, from an outsider:
Due to family friends I have come to know and love, I began to research Jehovahs Witnesses. While researching on the internet, i stumbled across JWD. I was already quite familiar with the "unique" doctrines, but I didn't have a clue about the practices that can be so devastating to families, and one's autonomy and mental/spiritual health. IT is perplexing to me that these issues have not received more publicity, and I've already explored some local avenues/opportunities for getting this info more exposure.
I have read many threads and many bios, and have felt anger and sadness. Not being an exJW, I almost felt like I shouldn't be here, like I was crashing someone's support group. But I always felt welcome, and even enjoyed a few PMs with some neat people. This is such a unique group (born-ins, UBMs, faders, atheists, agnostics, BACs, etc), but all share that experience of being "touched by the tentacles of the Watchtower" as KoolAidman puts it.
I'm amazed at the level of intelligence displayed here. You all deserve a book deal! Thanks for sharing; it has definitely illumined me, and moved me!

The list of rules! I have actually thought it would be interesting to pass that out to anyone who takes some of their literature, like when they're out at the tables.

I love that question, as I'm on my fifth one! LOL! My answer is................no. Love them? yes, always. Like them is a different story. I dont' think they like me either, but that's ok.
I agree with Caliber, though, that thankfully they do grow out of it. I find that going to college/moving out works wonders for their maturity and our relationship.

Peace to this house
by sacolton inluke 10:5.
"when you enter a house, first say, 'peace to this house.'.
do you recall ever getting this greeting from a jehovah's witness?

No money, purse or extra sandals either! And don't stop to gab with anyone on the way. (previous verse: Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road.)
Although I am reminded of the time that a pair of JW ladies a few years ago did literally shake the dust off their feet after my visit with them! It was kind of startling!

Just gotta vent here. We're very close to a JW senior at my dau's HS. He hangs out here ALL the time. THey are just friends. THeir latest thing together has been watching all the old DIsney videos. LOL. THe guy is adorable, and i've gotten fairly close to him as well. -- The mom came knocking at our door a few months ago. I didn't know if she knew me or not, but i invited her and her associate back, and we had an 'interesting' long conversation. (I had been reading JWD for months, as well as other sources.) She just now found out i was the mom, and it's been my house he's been at all the time. Now suddenly, after months of him hanging here so much, she says he can't,accuses him of having a fling with my daughter (horrors!!) , etc. grrrr. They are REALLY just watching videos and talking!!!!!!!!! I can't imagine having a son who is such a good guy , smart, etc, and treating him that way!! :( It makes me wonder if at some point, this strategy will backfire big time, and he'll just give up and give her something to really worry about!! SHeesh!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two reasons Witnesses think they are the Truth
by BonaFide ini have had several conversations over the past few years with brothers that i know that are elders, c.o.
's, and bethelites.
one thing almost all of them have said:.

The last JW i spoke to at length kept repeating 'we don't go to war" over and over again, almost like a mantra. It didn't even matter what question i was asking, what i was talking about......she kept saying "we don't go to war." I'm like, ok, does not compute, does not follow, does not answer the question, does not even relate to the question or topic.

CT Russell was not the only wacky pyramidologist
by Awakened at Gilead ini just finished reading a 1943 essay by bertrand russell (not related to crackpot ctr as far as i know, lol) where he discusses his cynical viewpoint of religious beliefs.
towards the end of his essay, he indicates that, instead of being disgusted by people who believe crazy implausibilities, he is actually somewhat amused, even entertained, by some of them, when their beliefs are generally harmless to the rest of the population.
after listing a few of these what he terms superstitions that "add to the gaity of life", he makes an interesting statement that jws should pay attention to:.

A@G: I just read a book called Allies for Armageddon, The Rise of Christian Zionism. I could not believe how much was in there about the history of ideas that were similar to CTR. Especially the views of Bible prophecy, year date theory, date setting, reading current headlines into eschatology, etc. I just thought i'd mention it, as it was an added bonus to what i expected to find in the book! IT would be an interesting project to compile a succinct form of the history of those ideas. Oh yes, it would clearly show how non-unique they were.
