Jehovah's Witnesses and their Elders
by AllTimeJeff ini wonder if the governing body (gb) knows the trouble the whole thing started..... to be sure, when the gb put into effect that all congregations of jehovah's witnesses were to have a body of elders that is in existence today, their goal was to meet their own ends.
under a sub heading "gearing up for explosive growth" in their history book "jehovah's witnesses - proclaimers of god's kingdom" they stated..... ***.
jehovahs servants were determined to continue to yield to divine direction.

Why do you believe in the Trinity?
by JimmyPage ini believe in god but no longer accept the wt's views.
i still find the idea of the trinity hard to accept, however, probably because of my jw upbringing.
a coworker's child died and i attended the church memorial.

One thing that runs unitedly through all 'mainstream' Christian churches is the Trinity and Christ's resurrection.

Has your " Self Esteem " Improved After Leaving Jehovah's Witnesses ?
by flipper init seems to be an issue that some have after leaving the witness cult because none of us were ever made to feel we were " good " enough or "valued " enough for what we were trying to accomplish in the cult.
growing up i had pounded into my head by my jw elder father what jesus said, " after doing all things remember you are good for nothing slaves , what we have done is what we ought to have done.
" then i thought to myself - " where's the joy in that ?

I think for Christians it's important to recognise that we're sinner and deserve to die. But where our self-esteem gets a shot in the arm is when you realise that God loves us so much that His Son died for us. Therefore, we've got God's love on our side.
My self-esteem has improved immeasurably since leaving the WTS. I never thought I was good enough.

Hi JimmyPage. I was where you are just a couple of months ago. I think you hit the key issue right on when you referred to your JW upbringing. Any distate you may have towards the Trinity or even going to church has come directly from the WTS.
Do I believe the Trinity. Yes, I believe that God is a spirit being made up of three equal persons. I believe the Trinity is present in our worship to God; our worship is through the Son, by the Spirit, to the glory of the Father.
I've found it useful to hang out with Christians and ask them about the Trinity and other beliefs, such as being saved through faith alone. If you have a local church, find out if they run the Alpha Course. We both attended and found it really helpful and a great way to meet new people*.
*We've made some really great friends through Alpha, I was even invited to play a game of football (soccer) with some of the guys who attend the church that ran the Alpha I attended.

In all seriousness, those attending the DC in Perth in 2009 can expect to see huge bill posters relating to the WTS. The hotel we stayed at in 2008 had a massive bill board across the street picturing a door with the message 'Jesus is knocking at the door'. It had a big impact on us. We tracked down who put the poster up, a Christian ministry group in Perth.

Should you believe in the Trinity book says...
by middleman injust put together a little document comparing the watchtower's misquotes from page 7 of their trinity book.
i have been reading much of the ante nicene fathers lately and the more i read them it amazes me that the society would even mention them to refute the trinity.
by reading the writings from these early church fathers we can truly see that they belived the core doctines that mainstream christians follow today (for the most part).

Yes, I like this, but as StAnn says it could perhaps be a wee bit clearer. Bookmarked and emailed.

JW's don't know their own faith
by wobble ini think this may well have been done to death before, but it still surprised me to find it so close to home.. i t has been pointed out that many jw's can't explain their doctrines, but i never thought that would apply to my sister.she is a super-culty dub,in for over sixty years, and during a somewhat heated conversation at the weekend she kept throwing things at me as "trooves" and i had to keep saying "you need to research that".
for example i told her that according to the wt jesus was only the mediator for the 144,000. she did not agree that was wt teaching,so i just said the above.. it amazes me that i will have to educate her,ex-pioneer and great door-knocker,as to what she is supposed to believe, before i show her the errors,if we ever get down to a proper discussion.
i don't really want to though,i think she and her husband need and deserve the borg.. are you surprised at the ignorance of thir own religion by witnessses, despite all those meetings and hours of study?.

Many JWs are not aware, and probably don't really care, about the absolute core, 'Christian' doctrines of the WTS. The example you cite above is classic. I confess that it wasn't until memorial season 2008 that I learned that the 144,000 alone have Christ as mediator. I was raised as a witness, pioneered for many years and was serving as an elder.
The reality to most JWs is that these doctrines don't even register on their radar because to them they don't directly impact on their carrot-and-stick hopes. I mean, if the WTS has promised you a paradise earth, are you really going to concern yourself with how you're going to get their, i.e. what it is that makes it possible to have eternal life (namely Christ mediating for you). How many JWs know that Jesus has to be given the same honour as the Father, who to them is Jehovah? How many JWs know that the Bible teaches Christ has to be worshipped? Do they know that you can be disfellowshipped for confessing that Jesus has to be worshipped?
Another 'truth' that JWs probably don't know about is that the WTS teaches that the Bible was written only for the 144,000, that Christ's death was for them alone and that association with the remnant of 144,000 is essential for salvation.
The harsh reality of these doctrines is that they are completely contrary to Christian teaching in the Bible.

Do they still do the Bible Highlights at the meeting?
by passwordprotected inquick question - do they still have a part in the meeting whereby 3 or so chapters of the bible are discussed then there's chance for the jws to give comments based on their study?.
