It's not really anything to laugh about. I lost a VCR, hedge trimmers, and a velvet painting of dogs playing poker before I caught on.

To Farkel Re: Thomas Jefferson
by IslandWoman inhi farkel, .
on a recent thread you mentioned that thomas jefferson was your hero.
i too admire jefferson.. would you expound on why jefferson is your hero?

Hmmm
I read a Reader's Digest article about Jefferson a few years ago, and this always stuck with me.
In 1962, John F Kennedy hosted a dinner at the White House for Nobel Prize winners. He said, "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."

While you're busy staring at a computer monitor for a while, they sneak in and paste a picture of Jesus on your wall... and steal your VCR

West of Eden was part of a Trilogy. I think it ended with Winter In Eden. Pretty interesting, but three books was stretching it.
I saw a spot on TV recently about CM and ND coexisting. IIRC, they posited that there was violence between the two groups because they found CM skulls with holes in them.
I think they also said that CM looked very similar to HS, but you'd be able to pick them out of a lineup.

obiwan,
In 12 years you have not made any friends outside? I would guess not; probably because you felt guilty and had plans of 'someday' going back.
I spent years in the same kind of self-imposed limbo. Not wanting to go back, but not being able to fully leave (complete with worldly friends) because I still thought it was The Truth. What helped me was research on the Internet. After the painful process of admitting that I'd given my life to a lie, it wasn't hard to start living life again.
Along the lines of Sister Prisca's comment (I feel like I'm at the Hall), I think you need to decide for yourself whether you believe that JWs have The Truth. Once you do that, then you can tackle the family situation--from inside or outside, depending on your conclusions.

Blood Transfusions and Pedophilia
by Lee Elder inajwrb was approached early on about working together on these issues.
we took a hard look and opted out for ethical and pragmatic reasons.
though the issues share a common thread (child abuse), they have to be approached in different ways.

nancee park,
This is what Lee said:
However, through careful analysis we have been able to construct solid arguments that resulted in the WTS losing the blood debate in the medical ethics community. This was a victory for AJWRB but it will take years for this to filter down through the other medical communities.
He never claimed a universal victory--just one step down a long road. Also, to say he "won't take it to the public" reads things into his statement that simply are not there. Have you read the AJWRB web site?Hmmm

If You Can't Face A Witness Funeral Again..
by Englishman ini posted recently about how i attended a humanist funeral for my pal knocker john.
no prayers, no hymns, just a natural goodbye that, in itself, contained a healing element that somewhat counteracted our feelings of grief.. then i think back to the funeral of my dad in the 80s.
it was, quite simply, nothing more than a commercial for the witness religion.

Hmmm
Tough one.
If the PO is not a hardcase, would he be amenable to toning things down a little? He won't completely get rid of the commercial aspect of a JW funeral, but he might be able to set a more respectful and tolerant tone toward you and your brother.
Maybe if he knows you just want a remembrance of your mum, he won't cry that to let you say a few words would be inviting the demunz in. That always cracked me up. Like a whole horde of demons are waiting outside the door, but need a smurf doll or garage-sale lampshade to invite them in. But I digress.

Great Moments in the History of the Net
by JanH inthe excellent search engine google not only indexes a significant part of the www, it also contains a massive archive of usenet discussions.
some of the old timers here participated on usenet while the world wide web was just a glimmer in the imagination of tim berners-lee.
i actually participated on both sides of the jw/exjw wars from late 92 onwards.

Hey Jan,
I just read some of those older threads. Is that Mustard guy YouKnow?
