Holy cow! Today is the first time I've ever heard of this group, and wow! after two hours of googling, I'm simply amazed!
AK - Jeff, you are right on the money with your comment. I guess I wasn't feeling "dumb" for being duped, but it really made me draw parallels to how HUMAN these organizations really are. Nothing God-inspired about them.
So it makes me a whole less fearful of the "what if they were right?" question.

Did your Parents force you to do School Projects out of the JW magazines
by orangefatcat inmy parents wouldn't let us read anything but the watch tower stuff and if we had to do a report on anything at school it had to be a project out of an awake magazine.
did your parents do this to you too?

maybe in grade school, where applicable. By the time I got to high school, I quit telling my parents about my homework, and did all my own research myself. At the LIBRARY.

We have the power...
by Tuesday inin watching this lunacy in the senate of the auto-makers asking for a bail out essentially because they didn't listen to consumer demand (and flying in on private jets then talking about cutting "needless expenses" oh the irony), i'm starting to realize just how much power the average joe has.. think about this, six months ago i was paying $4.30 per gallon on gas.
i drastically cut my driving.
i used to fill up every week, now due to cutting my driving habits i fill up every 2 and 1/2 weeks.

I look at the recent surge in places like Whole Foods and Trader Joes, and the increased availability of organic products at my local mega-grocer, and the increase of more healthy vegetable-based prepared foods, and I say "yes, the consumer has the power!" But only where there is a mass trend.
Although I have noticed that when I started buying Purina Naturals cat food at my local store, I could only find one or two bags on the shelf at a time. Now that I buy it regularly, I consistently find five or six bags on the shelf. When I go to a grocery store elsewhere and look for it, I can't find it.
So I sometimes wonder if I am single-handedly responsible for my grocer increasing his order and thus raising local awareness and therefore demand for the product.
Wishful thinking, perhaps, but then again, these types of things happen a bit too often to be sheer coincidence .... -

Scripture quotes on items not made by JW's is considered bad
by kitten whiskers inhave you ever noticed, or noticed it in yourself, that when you see a product with a scriptural quote, it was avoided, unless it was made by a jw company?
i remember my mom coming over and on a bag of potato chips, they quoted a scripture on the back of a bag.
she picked it up and said something to the effects of it being terrible.

I remember when I had a discussion with my big brother about the YMCA. I asked why it was bad, and he simply replied, "It's the Young Men's CHRISTIAN Association ... ?" with raised eyebrows.
And while I "got" what he meant, it always struck me as strange that he would say the word "Christian" as if it were a swear word, when isn't that exactly what we were supposed to be? And I turned that over and over in my head ever since. -

Worshiping the cross
by Amyfa inthere is a poster on here called reniaa and she has said a few times that we worship the cross.
i know i don't and know my family don't.
so i decided to look into it to find out if what she is saying is true.

The cross in front of the church is exactly the same thing to churchgoers as the bible on the banner is to witnesses at a convention. Do witnesses worship the banner?

I don't believe in the concept of "deserve." It implies someone over me, judging me. I refuse to acknowledge any such authority.

If you cheat on me, I will forgive you, but not if you leave Jehovah
by Hiddenwindow inwhen i told my wife that i no longer believe the wt is the truth, she started crying and said that it was easier for her to forgive me if i am unfaithful to her than if i leave the wt.
i am sure now: being a witness is a form of mental illness.

well think about it: thousands of talks and articles over a lifetime that deal with infidelity, and that the innocent spouse has a decision to make, whether to forgive or not -- and we all know forgiveness is the "godly" thing to do, because "Jehovah hates a divorcing."
And over that same lifetime, there is not ONE talk or article that suggests that an "apostate" can or should be forgiven. Instead, every talk and article is about how they should be "hated." -

I chose a rich man over a pauper. Biggest mistake I've ever made.
I thought it would be good for my kids, but his money's only made them lazy and insecure. It's done the same to me.
If only I could go back in time .......
