I had trouble with "The Shack" as a religious book. Too much fanciful stuff for me. After my JW experience, I am much more of a realist. It was OK if I looked at it as pure fiction, (which I believe it is).

Books that touch us.
by PSacramento innot sure if there was a thread like this before, but.... there are times that certain books touch us in our spirtual lives, sometimes in an emotional way, other times in a theocratical way.. the shack by william young touched me deeply and renewed my faith in jesus and god.. in search of christain freedom and crisis of conscience by raymond franz, made me aware that the issues i laways had with organized religion were not just mine.. question of consceince by charles davis, showed me the the issues that mr.franz faced in the wt were faced by other in the rcc far earlier and made me understand that we must truly server christ and not any man-made organization.. the jesus i never knew by philip yancey, which i read after the shack motivate dme to read the nt with new eyes.. the nrsv of the nt with greek interlinear, one of the best study interlinears i have.. the oxford bible commentary, a must for any student of the bible.. .

We live in an area that has water with documented radium contamination. It is supposedly at a "safe" level. We have always used bottled water and now have reverse osmosis unit at the sink. Naturally, we give our pets purified water, but I have to say, they seem to prefer the taste of the unfiltered water. Go figure.

Did you ever had someone not speak to you for years because of a grudge?
by asilentone indid you ever had someone not speak to you for years because of a grudge against you?
as the years passed by, did you make up with that person and become friends again?
do you know someone that has that kind of experience?
-

Yes, two of my brothers. I got sick and tired of their wives meanness and said so. Since then, we aren't speaking. I reached out to the younger one recently and he said we should leave things as they are. It's sad, but I can live with it.

Anyone remember Holiday Magic cosmetics. Hooked in a lot of people, including JWs in central NY in the 70s.

I am sad to hear this. As a kid I looked up to him as an honest, trustworthy newsman and I tried to learn to speak as he did. I grew up in Boston and spent summers in northern NY and all the other kids made fun of my accent. I lost the accent and learned to recognize a great reporter in the bargain. I'll miss him.

JW email making the rounds: He doesn't serve Jehovah
by truthseeker inthis is making the rounds.
he doesn't serve jehovah.
i'd like to tell you a story, about true love at last.

This is beyond disgusting. I know plenty of abusive JW husbands, cheating wives and elder husbands and so on. The idea that marrying outside the JWs causes such grief exclusively is so stupid I am almost speechless.

When I read stuff like this, it makes me think they know EXACTLY what they're doing
by Mickey mouse inthis article must have passed me by before (taken from the "jws and shrinks" thread).
now i understand the mechanics of cult mind control, i can see precisely why they make the statements highlighted in bold.
it does make me question whether the governing body are cognizant of their use of mind control.

"It should be mentioned, too, that while psychiatrists and psychologists have professional, postgraduate degrees, many others with no professional qualifications practice without supervision as counselors or therapists. Some individuals have spent a lot of money consulting such unqualified people."
No Kidding!!! And what about those in the KH, such as elders who set themselves up as confessors and advisers? Their armchair, no license psychological practice has harmed countless witnesses who have come to them seeking help! disgusting.

Guilt trip
by vikesgirl101 ini got to thinking about something that happened a year ago.
i was drifting away from the org, when my sister-in-law told me i was being selfish.
she said she was at aloss for words as to what to tell her 11 year old daughter about me.

Sometimes the self-righteousness is really hard to stomach. My ex-sister in law wrote me a letter on my wedding day telling me that I had deeply hurt my entire family. They could forgive my "adultery" (getting married again) but not my turning my back on Jehovah. Her husband was one of the elders who chastised us for having our DF'd daughter's photo on display in our home. Nice folks.
My new hubbby asked me for the address of the body of elders where the SIL lived and he wrote them a letter in which he pointed out how un-Christian her actions were and quoting scriptures from Paul's letters. He sent along a copy of her poison pen letter for them to see. They actually wrote him back and commended his desire to defend me, but also justifying her actions as being motivated by her "love for me." It's hard to believe I lasted 30 years with this org. Freedom is sweet and worth it, no matter the cost.
I love my husband, I think I'll keep him for another 100 years!

I can't imagine doing THAT in my wildest dreams.....
by AK - Jeff inputting on a three piece suit to spend a 90 degree summer day knocking on doors and trespassing!dragging an entire family, including babies and young children to three or four day meetings in an outdoor stadium, living in a seedy motel room for the week.getting home from work and spending the next six hours cramming for a 'theocratic review', getting the entire family ready to go, gulping down dinner, and speeding off to the hall, and then finally getting home around 11 pm, hurrying off to bed so that everyone could get up for work and school in the morning!going to school to explain to the teachers why little johnny can't color pictures of santa, salute the flag of his country, eat birthday cake with all the other 5 year olds, bow his head when prayer is offered, or exchange valentines with all the cute 5 year old girls in class.
and then explaining with grace why he is not immersed in a cult!well, on and on!
these things were typical of my witness life - now i cannot imagine ever doing such silly things, and especially thinking that somehow they would bring pleasure to my god!.

Memories! We attended a convetion at Fenway Park many years ago. I think it was 7 days. Our room was at a dorm at Brandeis University which was quite a distance away. We went to Boston on the train and had to find a commuter train to take us out to Brandeis. We got off the train and had to walk about a mile to the campus with suitcases in hand on a very hot day. Oh, and the best part: I was 8 months pregnant with a 2 1/2 year old in tow. When we finally got on campus, we asked a security guy who was directing traffic where the room was. He looked at the paperwork and said, "That's on the east quadrangle, on the other side of the campus." I think I must have looked like I would pass out, because he suddenly said, "Wait right here. I'm getting off in a few minutes and I'll give you a ride over there." What a nightmare. How foolish to go there and put ourselves through all that!
