was there one issue or incident, final straw, so-to-speak, that made you leave once and for all?
i know there was for me.. i had been having doubts for years, and had stopped believing it was the truth.
but i labored on as a jw, in part because of my family, and in part because i had invested so much of myself in it.
1935.
After the generation change it was the last date you could hang your hat on for the big A. After that, nothing to keep this crap from going on indefinately. That opened the floodgates of the internet for 'forbidden' research on JW's. Checkmate. ofo
in a recent online conversation with a current jw [or at least i think this to be true], i was accused of 'being on the wrong side'.. i countered with my opinion that there are thousands of 'sides' - since every religion believes itself to be the 'right side'.
i know that i left one 'side' that is wrong - full of lies, deceptions, and false doctrines.
but i don't consider myself to have taken any other side - that is, i believe myself to be entirely neutral in such matters - i just don't have enough centuries of life to sort out who might have the 'right side'.
This question is just as black and white as the society is.
Life is NOT black and white.
History is replete with people who imposed a black and white world view on everyone they could bring under their influence.
The results have always, always, always been suffering.
Sometimes I think the truest words in the bible are when Pilate said "what is truth?"

the following quote is taken from the article is it wrong to change your religion?
in the july 2009 awake p29:
no one should be forced to worship in a way that he finds unacceptable or be made to choose between his beliefs and his family.
Using this Awake article to try to get anyone who is a true believer to change their mind isn't going to happen. First of all, they would run to the body of elders with it and they would say there has been no change in the understanding of DF/DA. End of story. If you have a relative who is just looking for an excuse to associate, then it might work I suppose.
Bring this article to any elder and I'm sure he would say, look at the context of the article and it is clear this is referring to people studying or interested in the "truth" and not DF people that have "rejected jehovah".................. sorry mini throw-up there.
It is hypocritical in the extreme, I agree, and it is an excellent example if trying to prove the publications contradict themselves but won't gain much traction to get people to defy the elders and GB.
I wish it weren't so.

the title says it all.. what arguments have you heard in people trying to defend the org in saying they are 'spirit directed but the writers and gb are not spirit inspired'?.
i have never seen much of a difference.
this seems to be the crux of the matter.
Thanks for the effort you put into that response colton.
Any other thoughts on this topic?

I have never seen much of a difference. This seems to be the crux of the matter. If you can prove there is no difference, then their claim of being spirit directed doesn't hold up with all the undeniable errors in the Watchtower and other publications.
How is this officially explained away?
What do you think the difference is if any?
How would you counter this reasoning without outing yourself?
Thanks. ofo
wow.
and so the wt society tightens down the screwdriver a bit more !
one of my wife and my lurking jw friends sent us this article which has some very pointed words in it inciting all jehovah's witnesses to take an even harder line view of apostates in this recent april 15th wt.. on pg.
Anybody notice the implication in paragraph 13 that 'watch out for apostates even among those that are still going to the kingdom hall?'
Paragraph says "When Satan was present at the gatherings in heaven, he did not attend with the intention of praising Jehovah. The Devil had a malicious attitude and a sinister objective. After he accused Job and recieved permission to test him, "Satan went out away from the person of Jehovah.""
The message? Mistrust the person sitting next to you. They might be an apostate! Run!
Subtle hint that those who leave right after the meeting is over are 'going out away' just like satan?
I think the GB are really bugged by the undercover JW apostates. They can't stand that there are some at the meetings that don't believe the garbage, but are there to get info, or keep family happy ect. Sinister objective.
Ratchet up the paranoia! ofo
right now.......and since 1995.....wt has no real teaching to show how close we are to the end......none......most dubs prob dont even know......but wt has always been about dates.....and how close the end is to those dates......but now.....since we unplugged the generation of 1914 to the end of the world.......and now that we are still recruiting the anointed for heaven......the last days can last and last and last......duh...that is why they are called the last days!!
!........and so do they still teach it is "very, very near" (only used one time in wt)....or "imminent" ??
?......just a year ago i think?.......so how close do they say we are now and why?.........damm the bible is soooo clear that nobody knows the day or hour...yet i bet they still say is just around the corner (based on what scripture!?!??!?!?!)..........
I love this topic.
I was a little miffed at the 1995 change but told myself that it just put it off a little. I was still hanging on the 1935 date and it was always said that there would still be members of the anointed on earth when armageddon started. So, those anointed in 1935 couldn't all die before armageddon...still the time limit.
Well...ax 1935 and what do you get? A very pissed off OFO. Yes that QFR really rocked my boat, although I had already discovered the 607 myth by that time. 1935 was a BIG nail in the coffin. I was really ticked that such a major doctrine change was slipped in as a QFR. As if these are genuine questions people mail in. Please. What a bunch of cowards. Slick ones. But still cowards. ofo
i was offered a journalism scholarship at ohio state ... mom made me turn it down cause "armageddonwas near"... ended up a janitor!
.
Uh, Did you just say I was raised a JW retard? Ok, fair enough that's probably pretty accurate.
My answer a resounding yes and who knows what might have been.
I was a pretty intelligent kid, in gifted classes, could have gone into sports, reached for academic and sports scholarships(we didn't have much money), but that was all no no. Even taking AP classes was somehow viewed as lacking in faith because it hinted at preparing for university. So, I had managed underachievement. Much bitterness about what might have beens, but try not to think about it too much because it is rather depressing and doesn't accomplish anything. Great thread. ofo
the only reason you have total control over all of your members is your false ''faithful and discreet slave'' scripture.
this scripture was applied only for your benefit.
without this scripture your whole religion would fall..
The 21st century is very very very different than the 19th century that Russell lived in. The past is catching up with you. And it's a bitch!
