i know, i know... some of ya'll are gettin' sick of this "generation" thing... .

but for whatever reason, i had not seen this actual quote from the dc talk (that or had not paid much attention to it until now).

seeing it in print really brought home how desparate they are to try to hang on to 1914 in whatever way they can.

I told the two elders who came to beat me up over leaving the witnesses back in 1979 that this "generation of 1914" was going to eventually bite them in the butt.

They asked me if I was not making a prophecy - I said NO, I AM JUST SAYING THAT THE 1914 GENERATION WILL DIE OFF, AND IT WILL BITE YOU IN THE BUTT BECAUSE ARMAGEDDON WILL NOT HAVE COME. It does not require you to be Jeremiah to realize that they cannot get a prophecy right on the end of the world, and that people only live a little over 100 years at the very most.

One of those two elders has been dead for five years now.

I wonder if the other one (who is my age) - even remembers that I told him that when they read this "two overlapping generations" crap.

many argue that the truth will always be the truth because of core beliefs: no hellfire, no trinity, no immortal soul, adam and eve lost paradise (and thus paradise on earth will be restored and the need for the ransom), the issue of universal soverignty, last days, loving brotherhood, using god's name.. most people are attracted to the truth becuase of at least one or more of these beliefs and refer to these often as the 'ring of truth'.

this makes it very easy to then shrug of any of the past mistakes or any current teaching that is hard to understand or believe.

i myself am struggling with this.

I don't think he was a troll... I think he is having his C of C right now and can't accept the evidence. He's trying to rationalize it away...and it ain't working.

That is what I would LIKE to think, too - Undercover. But I cannot be completely sure.

It might be worth someone who knows how to find it posting a link to what we have here on Greenlees and Chitty - seems like some newer ex-JWs may not know about this scandal. I would like to read it again myself to remember the facts - somehow I thought they sent Greenlees to New Orleans to be a special pioneer in order to get him out of Bethel.

The action of the Society in covering that up and never really acting against them is as big a scandal as the U.N. coverup - given their published views on homosexuality.

god of the gaps arguments are simply not convincing, god is no more likely to be the correct gap filler than anything else, in any case where god is squeezed into a gap, we could easily just fill it with (for example) a committee of eternally existing physical lifeforms, god is no more plausible than they are as an explanation.

as for the arguments themselves:.

the cosmological argument = god of the gaps: we think (though we are not certain) that the universe had a beginning, it was probably the big bang, the big bang needed a cause.

Sir 82 - Wikipedia disagrees with your definition of Agnosticism in a subtle way:

Agnosticism is the view that the truth value of certain claims—especially claims about the existence or non-existence of any deity, but also other religious and metaphysical claims—is unknown or unknowable. [

The key point being the "OR" - unknown OR unknowable. Your definition appeared to me to say all Agnostics maintain the existence of God is unknowable.

Agnostics like myself simply say we do not know, not that we CANNOT IN PRINCIPLE, know.

Further, agnostics like myself really do not care that we do not know - and do not care what others choose to believe.

What does that change? Someone can occupy either of those positions & still claim to belief in a God. The former is a gnostic & the latter is an agnostic, but either of those people can be a theist or an atheist.

No, you plainly cannot take the position of (religious) Atheism or (religious) Agnosticism and still logically claim to believe in a (religious) God.
