some of the arial photos look photoshopped. It just looks so unreal. Like something out of a SyFy made for TV movie. I'm waiting for some half mutant reptilian insect creature to come out of the hole and threaten mankind.

What You Are Confronted With in a Bookstore
by AllTimeJeff injust sharing something that occurred to me this weekend.. i love to go to bookstores.
barnes and noble's is the one closest to where i live, although there are a couple of independent bookstores downtown that i like as well.. i have to admit that at times, i feel overwhelmed when i look at all the books.

Good thread Jeff, lately I've found myself in the same boat thinking to myself, "why bother debating or arguing with someone anymore." Last year I was in Home Depot with my Dad, and this store is in an urban area. While perusing the store, this older White cat in full uniform with military medals and decorations comes our way. This is not that long after Obama got elected. He looks at us and states, "well I guess we'll have to get our prayer rugs." I'm thinking to myself, "this old racist idiot, I oughta." At the end of the day, why bother? He's 90 years old and stuck in his ways. He'll never change just like millions upon millions of people will never change. Sometimes that retard B-Rock puts threads on here that I feel an urge to respond to, but i catch myself and think, "he's a troll. Granted a troll with a Republican and Conservative label, but nonetheless a troll. Why bother responding to the prick?" That same line of reasoning can be used when dealing with the liberal crowd too. Or any crowd for that matter.
As far as Barnes & Nobels is concerned, when you walk into the aisle with new releases, the majority of the books are catered to those with pre-existing ideaologies. NONE of them either, and I mean NONE of them are bringing anything new to the table. Its just the same ol' rhetoric. It's like the writing department at the WTS takes a break and tries writing for conservatives or liberals every now and then.

Will The Governing Body Enforce the New Generation Understanding and Muzzle Open Criticism Among the Rank and File?
by frankiespeakin into keep every jw on the same page about the new light on extending the generation to mammoth's lengths of time the gb will no doubt be squashing any open criticism,, even the old cronies at bethel will looking differently at the gb when that starts happening.
even the most hardcore believer will be looking at the governing body in a "new light".

I don't have anything to really add to this thread, but wanted to share this with ya. The C.O. visit was just wrapped up with my congregation, and not once, and I mean not once, was this doctrine touched upon in the slightest way. I was anticipating him touching on it, but it never happened.

My Dad is actually dying to see it. He's a hardcore ol school dub too. He's always like these desert based fantasy movies. Like Ali Baba & the 40 Thieves, Arabian Nights, etc.. I guess when he was young, those movies were like Star Wars is to our generation.
I don't think most Dubs would correlate this movie with what Daniel was referring to. However, there will always be the resident, self-righteous weirdo in the hall who would make the connection no matter how far of a stretch it would be.

"Yes Man" - a demonstration of mind control?
by sd-7 ini just watched the film "yes man" not that long ago.
in it, jim carrey's character attends a conference, was it?
i couldn't help thinking about the mind control used there, delightfully played by terence stamp.. person is isolated from outsiders, ostracized immediately for having a contrary opinion ("no man!

Never seen that flick, have to check it out. I wonder if they used Mormons instead of JWs because Mormons are slightly weirder, yet also more maintstream than JWs?

I like some sci-fi too. I miss Farscape. I loved the first few seasons of the X-Files. Particulary the episode, "Home." I like the Clone Wars too, and have been meaning to get it on DVD. There's like three or four seasons now right?
Another favorite I miss was Samurai Jack. They never did do a proper conclusion to that series. The new Diana on V is hot too. I like her better than Jane Badler.

Is it common to push the limits but staying on the safe side?
by dgp ini imagine that all the stress and demands a jehovah's witness has to withstand, plus the always-present fear that they can never be sure they are actually going to be spared at armageddon, eventually force the person to wonder whether it is really worth it.
it would be something like "i don't know if i will be spared.
why don't i push the limits to the very end, so i can have more of a normal life, and yet technically be on the safe side?".

I think its quite common to push the limit by not doing all thats expected of one. This is a religion that bases salvation by works, however people often enough only do the minimum to keep the Elders off their backs. I'd venture to say when it comes to field service, many could put in more hours than what they're turning in. It's not a case of health problems, or other responsibilities. I really believe its a simple as......... they just don't want to go out in field service for a number of reasons. Some guys, well I guess most nowadays, really don't want to reach out and become Servants or Elders. This past Tuesday at the Service Meeting we went over an article discussing Pioneering, I believe the title was, "You'd Make a Great Pioneer!" 95% of the people who commented during the part, barely average the national average. A good percentage of those I'd be willing to bet fudge their numbers. In the book that was released last year, I cannot recall the name of it now and I'm at work. Its the one with JAracz, and Barr looking at the globe and admiring the org's progress towards the front of the book. In that same book, there's a page towards the back, that shows two men out in field service, and the one is looking at his watch and has a look on his face that speaks, "well thats it for me today!", while the other guy is looking at him with dissapointment for not sharing his enthusiasm for the ministry. That picture represents most dubs IMO. That same reasoning can be found in other decisions that the common dub makes. Meanwhile we're constantly being admonished to do all we can do for Jehovah. Dubs are consicously doing just enough to not lose their minds.

disfellowshipping announcements
by asilentone inwhen they announced disfellowshipping of certain individuals in your congregation?
were you shocked?
tell me about it.

I would always tense up when they would call an elder up after the announcements were over, and if he had a somber look on his face, and then my chest would hurt if they started to say.."this is to inform the congregation"...
Always would never listen to the rest of the meeting, & then there was always crying afterward & uncomfortableness as we went up to hug the family, heartbreaking...
It seemed like time stopped when the chairman would go, "Bro.Shunsky has a brief announcement to make." It's literally Matrix like watching him approach the platform. The mood just is too onimous. Then you notice that the brother doesn't have any paperwork in his hands, so you know he's not reading a letter. Hate those moments. Then the crying afterwards sucked. I always made it a point to remain stoic after those meetings, act like business as usual.

Another poster mentioned the special campaign for, "The End of False Religion is Near". I didnt realize it was from 2006. Wow, how time flies. This past winter, I was doing door to door with my BIL on an unusally warm day. The neighborhood is not the greatest. There was a house where we couldnt tell immediately whether or not anyone lived in it. While standing on the porch and marveling at the mess that it was, what did I see on the ground? That purple track with lightening bolts and big bold print proclaiming, "The End of False Religion is Near!" Can't believe its been four years since we did that!!! Four years!!!! Your parents ever tell you the story about the little boy who cried wolf? Special.
