If the Society flat out said they were wrong about something they'd slammed in court by all the people (like me)who passed up some sort of opportunity because of advice (or false prophecy) based on WT teachings. I got absorbed the year I graduated from college (1973)and passed up a chance to go to grad school because we all knew the big show was comming in 1975.

My wife and I left in 1989. We've grown happier each year. We attend church, have a very rich sprititual life, both of us are involved in ministries.
Yes, if you are an active JW, don't believe everything you here about those of us who have left. We are not immoral, unhappy, or suicidal. There is life after the Watchtower and it is good.

on one judicial committee i served, we had a young 25 year old man meet with us.

I agree that the watchtower instills an inordinate fear about sex. I recently counted up references to sexual topics in a couple of the old indexes. Such subjects as masturbation, adultery, homosexuality, fornication etc average about one article a month. I've been going to church for 13 years now, and haven't heard any of this talked about.
When my wife and and I disassociated ourselves a co-worker asked me why we were so worried about being kicked out if we were going to leave any way. I told him that if it was announced that we'd been disfellowshipped everybody would assume it had something to do with sex. His remark was "That in itself says a lot."
i wanted to give an update to all those who kindly offered suggestions on how to deal with my jw son's ultimatum' "go tell the elders, or i will".. these last few days have been an intense crash course in life for me.
having experienced my firstborn son, whom i gave birth to, wiped his behind, dried his tears, and helped to grow to adulthood with loving support, threaten to turn me over to the "authorities" (elders) for wrong thinking and wrong speech, has been a deeply disturbing experience.
learning the truth about the "truth" was shocking, but this is just a crying tragedy.. after he found a short email from a board friend, which inadvertantly got into our regular email box instead of my private one, i was given a week to go to the elders.
I hope you are right and this is turning out OK. I read the orignal post and found myself speechless. I've prayed for you, it is the best I can do at the moment.

i've spent a good part of the afternoon reading about the judicial committee meeting at www.disfellowshipped.com.. i am more determined than ever to reread the new testament and meditate on it anew.. could faith in christ be that simple?

I recently had a chance to do some research on this. It appears that in the early church days a simple acknowledgment that "Jesus is Lord" what sufficient for conversion and baptism. Read also the account of Phillip and the Ethiopian eunech. The whole study took part of an afternoon.

a common technique used by the wts to express their viewpoint while avoiding the truth of the matter is to focus on the specific and imply that it is the general.. let me explain: do you know of any ex-jws who were disfellowshipped for immorality?
We got out in 1989. Since then I've been working better jobs, making more money, enjoyed a VERY good relationship with my wife and kids. We go to church regularly, and keep up a good spiritual life. No drugs, no sex outside marriage etc.
The borg scare tactics have no relationship with reality.

If you haven't read "The Gentile Times Reconsidered" by Olaf Johnson (I think that is the name - he's a Swedish witness who got disfellowshipped for writing it). He examines the Watchtowers claim that Jerusalem was destroyed in 607 BCE and totally takes it apart.
Of interest here is that Russell did not come up with the 1914 (and related dates)all on his own. It was lifted from a number of different sources that preceeded him.
Also, if you can find it, there is a book on the pyramid by an Englishman named Symthe that is the source of all the early teachings about the pyramid.
