Whats the dumbest thing you were counselled for?

i was once counselled by the elders for watching 'knots landing'....it became widely known in the congregation that me and a few other sisters would rush home from field service to watch our favourite soapie.

if we missed it, we would ring each other up for an update...or...if we weren't near a tv we would ask someone to put the phone handset on the top of their tv so we could hear it...pathetic huh...but that was all the excitement we could scrounge up in our otherwise dull and uneventful lives.

one of the elder's wive's conscience got the better of her...and she confessed to her husband..lol.

He shaves his head. You know that Michael Jorden look. The brothers actually told him that if he wanted any privileges,he would have to stop shaving his head like the world.

My brother was counseled for this too. I wonder what they have to say about his one carat diamond earring and his goatee ? I was counseled about dyeing my hair blonde. It looked good. Kheli, I also was not allowed to pioneer, supposedly because they thought I was unable to make the hours. The REAL reason was because the pioneers were an elite clique at our cong. One of the more down to earth pioneers used to say that they wore the P in pioneer like the S on Superman's chest.

Post your worst date story!

with all the nice guy/bad boy and do looks matter posts doing so well i thought it might be fun to do a worst date ever post.. so here goes mine: about 3 years ago my married friend had a neighbor she was good friends with he was a young widower with 2 kids and she thought we might like to get to know each other.

so we agreed to meet for dinner at his apt (he lived 2 apts down from my friend so it did not seem awkward or unsafe).

he cooked spaghetti and afterwards pulled out the old photo albums.

My worst date ever was with an elder's son. There's a group of islands of the coast of Lake Erie, that are notorious for their bars and nightlife. Well a group of dubs went up there for the entire day. I had to work early in the day, so I met my date when I got off work. By the time I got to the island (a 45 minute drive) he was already pissy drunk and embarrassing, and his breath was kicking like Van DAMME!

I think the real question here is did the young woman in Canada truly make her own decision? Or was it coerced using fear tactics? If she had all the facts about what she believes, would she make the same choice? If she knew that God wasn't behind her belief, would she choose to die? Her rights are being trampled by the JWs.

Knot's Landing comes on the Soap network on my cable system, but I'm pretty sure that's only in the USA.

I was counseled for getting a job while I was in high school. All of the teenagers in my cong were either pioneers (we had the youngest pioneer in the circuit) or training to be pioneers. Well, my mom was on welfare and my deadbeat dad wasn't paying child support. So... as soon as I hit 16 I went and got a cashier's job at the local grocery store. I was being called materialistic! That was a laugh. I used my money to buy lunch and other necessities.

What I missed being a JW

i got to thinking the other day about things that i missed out on being a jw growing up.

not going to collage comes to mind as does dating more extensively.. the thing i look back on with the most regret though, is my lack of deep friendships.

going to high school i had worldly friends of course, but i never let myself get too close to them.

I remember crying for days when my worldly best friend had a sleepover and of course my mother wouldn't let me go. I didn't have a date until I was 19 years old. I missed prom, college and all of the above. Those things are not trivial! I'm an adult now, with my own family and a college degree (associates, still working on the bachelor), and it still hurts. My ten year high school reunion is this year, and I have recently started to cultivate relationships with some of the people that I graduated with. I went to school with some really amazing people, and I never knew.

The last meeting I attended the elder that said the prayer made the statement 'Help us to guard against independent thinking'. I don't feel as a person that still believes in God and still wants to serve him, that I had any other option but to leave. Now I chose to fade away because my entire family are JWs. I don't think that option one is ever necessary unless its initiated by the cong. The only way to help our loved ones and friends still in the borg is to maintain a dialogue, but how can one be taken seriously if they are still active participants? If it were me, I would think that a person still in the borg could not be too serious about their convictions if they're still a member.
