Getting out...terminating Bible study
by PClark in.
i have been visited by a local jw woman weekly for almost 4 years and started weekly study about 1 year ago.
friday things took a more serious turn and i am very uncomfortable.. i need advise on how to stop the meetings (without being offensive) and still get away from this madness before it gets out of control.

Perhaps I am a tad skeptical... or perhaps it is the strange happenings here lately... but I need help understanding this...
"I have been visited by a local jw woman weekly for almost 4 years and started weekly study about 1 year ago. Friday things took a more serious turn and I am very uncomfortable.
I need advise on how to stop the meetings (without being offensive) and still get away from this madness before it gets out of control." So - a JW has been making return visits for 4 years? You then - after 4 years of their coming to your home... perhaps leaving magazines(?) decided to 'study' with them? They then started - and held a bible study with you for _1_ year? WOW!!! I left/quit going in 1982-ish... and back then, I believe they were trying to 'streamline' the indoctrination process... didn't the 'truth' book make it the '6-month plan'? This whole thing smells odd. Regards, Jim TX

"seems like they are trying to get round the legal issue of defamation..."
Bingo! We have a winner!
What you have to remember is that nowadays, it is the 'legal department' that is guiding the WTBTS... not the 'holy spirit' - or whatever.
So, any time you see 'new light', the first question you need to ask is... "How does this affect them legally, or in a court of law?"
Once you start doing that, it becomes very transparent what they are doing. Just trying to cover their butts in court.

Another area that is going to be affected...
My oldest sister - now deceased - just quit going to the meetings. Long ago (obviously prior to her death).
She would get migraines before meetings... or something - and would stay home.
In her later years - she became a hermit - and no one ever saw her.
Well - her funeral was handled as a JW funeral. The fella doing the speaking had to say things like "I have been told..." as he had never seen her, nor known her.
Soooooo... with this new 'power'... they are going to push those who have just become terribly 'inactive' away... and are going to p**** off some who still consider themselves JWs.

I think that this is an interesting turn of events.
First - you have to wonder what caused them to add this to their 'toolbox' for expulsion of individuals from their organization. Perhaps a recent court case or two?
Second - as has already been mentioned, since this gives the local 'sheriff' the power to toss out whoever they want... and we all know those in local 'authority' who think they are god's direct representatives... the numbers are going to start declining.
That ought to be interesting to just sit back and watch. Especially since they are sooooo 'number oriented'.
Perhaps not next year... but the year after that, should show some interesting 'numbers' on their membership roles, or lack thereof.
All they are doing is shooting themselves in the foot. No, wait. They've already done that. This time it's a little higher.

Gretchen,
Ummm... I think your own post has the answer...
"...it's promoted by those very women who have driven American men to the conclusion that they would be better off without an American wife."
So, based upon this...
"what kind of guy has to order a wife out of a catalog or on-line?"
See above...
"What is it about American women they don't like?"
See above...
"Is it that they want to be waited on?"
See above...
"Is this an issue with wanting women to be submissive to men?"
See above...

Can You Spot A Jehovah's Witness???
by minimus inare you able to tell if someone is a jw just by looking or listening to a person?
what are the give away signs that make you just know that they're a witness?
-
Jim_TX
Spotting JWs can be easy... or difficult. It depends on the time of day... and sometimes on hearing bits of conversation.
But - like has already been mentioned - JWs are not the only ones that pray before meals in public.
Usually suits and dresses on weekends... or other times of the week - in the evenings... especially the young ones.
I can usually spot 'em, and used to do it as a hobby... but am trying less and less nowadays. My hobbies are changing.

IS the GB and other Higher UP Squirreling away money from the IRS?

Personally, after having been in that group... I can tell you 'what would they think?'...
Due to the 'brainwashing'... most would chalk it up to 'persecution' - 'time of the end' - 'foretold in Revelation'... etc, that they have been primed with throughout the years.
Oh... there might be a few - who know - who would quietly slip away - and become 'apostate'.
But I believe the vast majority would remain 'faithful' - and brainwashed.

Wow! This is a cool topic - and at a time that I might just have some interesting input.
Over the weekend, I visited a friend that I have not seen in a long time. He had some issues with a controller he is using for an e-bike.
I got to see what he is using to ride to work. Well, the three iterations of what he rides...
1) What he has is a 'pusher' that he attaches to his bicycle. It is a motor attached to a 16" (or 14" - I'm not quite sure... but it's small) bike wheel. There is a battery pack that attaches to a controller, and switches, etc. When he gets going... he is than able to turn on a switch, and the motor kicks in.
He tells me that he is able to average about 23mph on his approx 16 mile trek to work.
2) The other method... he has a 'trike' Don't ask me the brand... it's a really low-slung 3-wheeler - 2 wheels in front, and one in back. He says that this is the easiest thing to ride he has had in a long time. I got to sit in it, and pedal for a bit. (He had it on rollers inside the house.)
He attaches his 'pusher' to this trike - and says that this is the best combination he has used. The extra oomph he gets from the pusher allows him to get to work. The trike is also low enough, that the aerodynamics are pretty good. (This might be a plus is your area.)
3) He and a friend are 'inventing' an e-bike. I got to see the prototype for this. He rode it to work last Thursdat - so it is functional... they are still puzzling through a few details... like... it doesn't seem to follow what they thought would be 'normal' for battery consumption. It seems to be running very efficient. I told him that maybe he has chosen a battery/motor combination that works well with the motor - hence the added efficiency.
He is trying to market the e-bikes to bikers that are willing to pay upwards of 1500 - a tad out of my reach right now... but I am thinking about it.
What I am doing right now... is working on an LED headlamp using some extremely bright LEDs. I showed him a prototype flashlight that I have... he was impressed. (I demoed it at night... and it lit up the trees - for quite a distance.) He definitely wants me to pursue this, as it seems that right now, he is using a little halogen lamp that he tends to over-peddle. (Not good.)
Anyway... don't know if this helps... I would say... try to get a trike - get a flag - for visibility... and have fun.
Oh - on the trike - he says that he can wear regular street-clothes, and shoes - unlike when he rides his bike. He says that he is not dripping sweat when he gets where he is going, too.
Just my thoughts... I hope it helps.

RE: Pianos -
I remember attending a KH when I was a kiddo... we had one of them there pie-annos. There was only one gal that knew how to actually play it.
If you think about it... with all of the 'don't dos' that they have... it's a wonder that any one knows how to play _any_ musical instrument.
RE: Assemblies -
Yeah - I remember the long assemblies... 1969 was the first one I went to. (There was one in 1963 - but my family was not able to go to that one. Pasadena, CA)
In 1969 - Kansas City, MO. It was in a baseball stadium, and it rained a lot. That's all I remember. Oh - and that parking was usually in someones' front yard where we had to pay. It wasn't in a 'good' neighborhood, either. At least... not one where you felt safe.
Then there was... 1973(?) and 1978(?)... probably some after that... but I had stopped going by then. I remember the wife and daughter going, though.
Usually had a nice little vacation whilst they were gone.

Jim TX
