Welcome! I know it seems daunting but many have made it out, only to find life is not pointless in "Satan's system", as they like to label the non-JW world (e.g., regular people). One family that I know where the parents were JWs for 30+ years and had lots of witness relatives ended up having a child who was gay. They were not the kind of family that you would expect to leave "the truth." But the entire family - parents and all of the children, most of whom were adults at the time - all left together. I don't know that the gay child was 100% of the reason but I believe they genuinely believed their child did not choose to be that way as some kind of "unscriptural" decision or something, and they couldn't accept that they were supposed to condemn their own kid. I'm not saying this will happen with your family - in fact I'm sure it's the exception - but you never know.

How will the NOOLITE on the Faithful and Discreet Slave affect the court case in Australia?
by hamsterbait inlast year, in the ongoing victoria, australia case, the watchtower lawyers stated in court that the "faithful and discreet slave" does not exist.
it is merely a "theological arrangement".
this was obviously an attempt to get those responsible at the top of the corporation "off the hook".. now the wtbts says explicitly that the fds are the same as the governing body of eight men in brooklyn.. does this mean that the australian courts can attempt to subpoena these eight men, as the charges are against (among others) the fds and the gb?.

I suspect the case is not going anywhere. Wasn't the case dismissed by the government, and then the same group came back with essentially the same case?

That article in the link is over 5 years old. If anything big came out of the tests, I assume we would have heard about sometime since then. I don't doubt that something like this might be possible some day, but I think it's a long way off. The problem is that almost all funding for R&D, both government and private, is earmarked toward research on specific diseases and not old age in general.

It seems that at this time, the insurance was pooled coverage with an outside insurance company. I note that at the time, they didn't have a beef with publishers suing the insurance company (really suing the congregation and having the insurance cover it) for injuries. Note part V "Accidents", section C, on page 35, which says:
" it is not wrong Scripturally either to make a claim on the congregation's insurance or to sue it because of an accident (see Watchtower, November 15, 1973, p. 704, par. 1)"
Also in the same section: " If someone claims injury or damage, do not hesitate to tell him that the con gregation does carry insurance which may apply."
However, now that the society itself administers the insurance, they have changed their tune about publishers suing the congregation for injuries and having the insurance cover it, since it comes right of of Watchtower's pocket now. Note 12/22/97 BOE under "Accidents at Kingdom Halls or Assembly Halls:
"7. If the injured party has personal insurance, encourage him to present his medical expenses to his insurance program. Kindly explain that the Kingdom Hall Assistance Arrangement is based on donated funds and that all expenses incurred are borne by the congregations.
8. Report the accident by phone if there is any threat or mention of legal action. Generally this would only occur if a worldly person happened to injure himself on your property. If this should happen, please obtain his name and address as well as the names and addresses of any witnesses, along with a full description of the incident."

Watchtower Insurance - conflict of interest ?
by Pterist ini open this thread as a new topic after receiving an update from atlantis on wbts insurance coverage.. while we are on the subject of insurance , does anyone know if the org.
takes out life insurance on its members ?
recently, it was exposed that walmart and a lot of businesses take out a "special" life insurance on their employees.

A lot of businesses take out life insurance on high level managers and executives. I disagree that it is not known that the payouts go to the company and not to the employee's family. Lots of people know about this and it's a common practice. I don't have a problem with it. If a Vice-President of Wal-mart dies, it might be difficult to find someone else capable of doing the same job and expensive to train the new person. Also if the things this person was in charge of suffer for a while until someone new gets up to speed, the company could lose profits. If it was somebody that was uniqiuely good at what he did, the business might never be the same (think of someone like Steve Jobs). I don't have a problem with companies taking out insurance to protect themselves against something like that. It's not like you taking out insurance on your neighbor's house because if the employee is important enough there would be a loss to the company.
I think that the issue with Wal-mart was that they were taking out policies on janitors and regular employees, which I do think is a problem, in that they were trying to exploit tax loopholes and profit from the deaths of low-level employees. I am sure the WTS could not take out life insurance policies on regular members. Whether they take out insurance on HQ people is a good question. It's probably hypocritical on some level but even if they did this it would be pretty mild on the spectrum of WTS hypocrisy.

A "Chernobyl" for the Watchtower - could it happen?
by sir82 inthere is an article here which posits that the collapse of the soviet union can be directly traced back to the chernobyl explosion.
it's a pretty compelling piece:.

Landlord business
by hoser inonce you spend your property it is spent forever.
this is what the wts is doing by selling out of brooklyn.
would it not make a lot more financial sense to become landlords in one of the hottest rental markets in the world?.
-
Chaserious
If it would be like that for worldly tenants, imagine what it would be for witlesses.
By all accounts they were good landlords to the "worldly" tenants in the Bossert hotel. Didn't preach to them, let them put up holiday decorations on their apartments doors, maintained it well, etc. Probably not looking for any more bad PR in Brooklyn.

I don't know the answer to these, and I hope to check back and see if anyone does. But I lol'd at this one:
Any outside agency have oversight of WT holdings?
Can't imagine this. They love their secrecy. Also, I imagine that even if someone other than the GB has to approve the checks, (and I would think this is the case ever since the change where the GB are no longer corporate officers) the culture is not one where anyone feels free to say 'no' to the GB. Other than the lawyers. They probably would say no if it's something that could cause a legal problem.
