Social disapproval? you bet. counseling, marking, Disfellowshipping. Approval by the group is what keeps them in line and is the reason for everything they do.
God's judgement has slowly eroded to be meaningless in comparison with congregational judgement.
it's not often talked about but in my experience a lot of witnesses have sex (or something like it) during their courtship.

we once lived in an apartment where every night about 2am it sounds like someone was trying to scratch their way out of one of the walls. it totally freaked me out. then one day i saw a possum crawling out from between the space between our apt and the next one, mystery solved.
i have a jw friend i grew up with who recently got married.
although, he and i were very close, when i left the "truth" we stopped talking and seeing each other due to the obvious.
on top of it all, he moved to jersey so it was even harder to see him.
its overwhelmingly sad when something like this happens to someone so young.
people always seek a reason when there is none, its just a physical occurrence that occurred.
i find a scientific reason to be more soothing than trying to figure out why a "loving god" would sometimes let this happen. that must be mind numbing

while in the past i have forced myself to specialize (Organizational Structure and Process Improvement theory and technology) i have never been satisfied.
I have been a reader and collector and spectator to satisfy my generalism.
Now, I am actively pursuing generalism and attempting to allow it to gradually fill my life.
i have discovered that an inactive mind is my greatest enemy.

it goes one step removed from religion. it goes back to the need for man to escape reality by creating a mythology, then these two mythologies are in disagreement which causes anxiety in each as they have to denounce the other in order to protect their own mythology, thus conflict.
