you have got to start learning english english at some point or another, after all, us brits are having to learn american english to be able to understand all those films (movies) about how you saved our arses (butts) during the 1939 -1945 (1941 - 1945) war.. now we all know the obvious ones, such as you calling a car bonnet the hood, the boot is the trunk and a spanner being a wrench etc etc.
plus the fact that you eat fries instead of chips and spread mayo instead of butter.

Help - elder just called!
by JW83 inhi guys, an elder who just moved into my local (slack) cong just called to find out how i was going spiritually!
i haven't been to meetings for a year and no one else has ever cared, even though i was aux pio'ing at the time i stopped.
he is coming over with his wife one day, he said.

Hi Blondie,
Milgram's experiment is a great example. Those people were not afraid, they just perceived a lack of choice and acted with unquestioning blind obedience. White Rose is notable because it was an exception to the rule - practically the only group of resistance within Germany. My point is that devotion to an ideology or even just an apathetic obedience or lack of resistance is dangerous. I shunned ex-witnesses not because of fear but because I thought that I was in the right and I was, according to the ideology I put my faith in. Those witnesses who are not dogmatic believers are just as bad, as they lack the will to resist. I have a friend who has shunned me even though we used to discuss 'apostate' theories before I left. I know that she doesn't think it is the truth and I am pretty sure she is not 'afraid' of leaving or dying etc. It is basically just that she might lose all her family and heaps of friends who are witnesses - a lack of motivation to resist. Dogmatic believers are ruthless, apathetic followers are just as bad. That is why I think Nazi Germany is such a great example of how an ideology can affect actions, the same if you look at the Soviet Union or the Catholic Church etc etc. I just don't think that fear plays that large a part, unless it is fear of standing up and being counted!

how do i shut a j.w up?
by h2o ini know many j.w's and they are allways hassling me with there beliefs and making me feel pretty hacked off at times,is there anything i could say to shut them up or any good questions that they don't like being asked,i assume there are a few ex j.w's on this forum so you must have come across some tricky questions before,hope someone can give some advice?thanks

Lauralisa, I loved your post too. Freedom - my favourite moments: during the men's final at Wimbledon when Goran Ivanisevic started crossing himself, I got so excited and wrapped up in the game I started crossing myself too! And singing the words to the national anthem at my citizenship ceremony this year - I used to hate having to sit down for that anthem at school like a freak!

I have experienced shunning by witnesses and I have also shunned as a witness. I know that this ideology and these people are ruthless.

I haven't been to meetings for a year and no one else has ever cared, even though I was aux pio'ing at the time I stopped. He is coming over with his wife one day, he said. I really want to disassociate cos I think it's all crap and the borg has hurt me a lot but my parents are witnesses and I don't want to make our relationship difficult cos we're really close. They know I'd disassociate if it wasn't for them. What should I say to this elder and his wife when they call - how do I manage my temper so that they just go away??!!

I appreciated your post. Anyone who has studied religion and ideology realises that black and white leads to good and evil. Shunning disfellowshipped people (family members and friends) is treating them as if they are 'socially dead'. This is the same thing that happened to the Jews prior to the Holocaust. It was a short step from 'socially dead' to 'physically dead'. The potential for evil is huge in the borg.

what job could you have had?
by sleepy inhi i've just come home from cleaning windows.what an absolutely soul destroying job.. when i think of the things i could have done.. i remmember how my teachers in school used to tell me i would surely go to university and get a good job.i remmember the shock on one teachers face a few years after i left school when i told her i was a window cleaner.. i was also intrested in art and quite good at it.my grandfather who wasn't a witness offered to help me and my brother get good jobs in the art world.. we turned him down.. arrmegeddon was so soon.. anyone else like me ?.

To Sleepy et al,
This is the thing that makes me the most angry, too. I've wasted six years of my life trying to pioneer and taking crap jobs. Just started a BA, but I'm still six years behind everyone else! The worse thing, though, is my parents. My dad was a window-cleaner, too, and just dropped that to become a roof guy. The council came down on him because he doesn't have a licence (which he didn't know he needed) so my parents are doing it hard at the moment. And they're in their late 40s, so I dread to think what will happen as they age. They also live in government housing because they gave up everything to 'move where the need is great'. Gullible, I know, but completely understandable. It makes me cry just to think about it. At least we are out and we can do something about our dreams!
