An Old Argument.... does it hold water?
by AK - Jeff inestimates range from 4 million to 15 million children die from starvation each year on this planet.
that's between 500 and 1700 children a day, depending on what numbers you accept.
still, no matter which numbers you use, doesn't this make you arrive at one of the following conclusions?.

If we think our god exists and should respond to human suffering what about the rest of the gods?
Here's a list of the top religions by population (there's more then twenty) http://www.adherents.com/Religions_By_Adherents.html: Note that Christianity makes up 33% of the worlds population the rest are non christian. I think it's fair to say ...most of the world does not believe in, or worship God and Jesus.
Christian believers don't give the other gods any consideration either. From a religious point of view our answers are limited and of course thats one of the by products of religious thinking.
While these figures are up look at the 3rd largest group. This is one of the fastest groups emerging and in many respects I think this 1.1 Billion who are non religious is an important milestone.
- Christianity: 2.1 billion
- Islam: 1.5 billion
- Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic/Atheist: 1.1 billion
- Hinduism: 900 million
- Chinese traditional religion: 394 million
- Buddhism: 376 million
- primal-indigenous: 300 million
- African Traditional & Diasporic: 100 million
- Sikhism: 23 million
- Juche: 19 million
- Spiritism: 15 million
- Judaism: 14 million
- Baha'i: 7 million
- Jainism: 4.2 million
- Shinto: 4 million
- Cao Dai: 4 million
- Zoroastrianism: 2.6 million
- Tenrikyo: 2 million
- Neo-Paganism: 1 million
- Unitarian-Universalism: 800 thousand

Spong: "Why We Must Reclaim The Bible From Fundamentalists"
by leavingwt injohn shelby spong, the retired american bishop, has written a new book.
his article, below, briefly explains the purpose of his new book.
why we must reclaim the bible from fundamentalists.

Spong is aces. He's not bad for a Christian. At least he knows the difference between delusion and logic and he's ready to challenge what is taught by churches that believe in fairy tales. Harmful ones at that.
Should he step down because he doesn't think the bible is inspired and that the supernatural should be dismissed? Hell no he shouldn't!
His brand of Christianity is based on humanistic qualities, concerns. and values. He lives in the real world and I guess he feels that the best teachings of Jesus have value even in this day and age. He is marching to a different drummer and he is becoming more and more mainstream as more and more people describe themselves as Christians but unaffiliated with any denomination.
He's one of the few who can resolve many of the ugly things one can find in the bible and liberate the basic and simple teachings of the Jewish Rabbi......... Jesus.

An outsopken atheist was taking a stroll through the forest when a bear started chasing him. "oh my god!" yelled the man and took off running. The bear caught up to him and barreled into the man who fell to ground, the bear put a mighty paw on the man's chest and lowered his mouth. "oh god oh god " the man cried out. Just then a white cloud desended and the man and the bear looked up at it. A voice called out "why did you forsake me atheist and speak out against me all of these years?"
"I didn't know you exsisted god............. I'm sorry".
The bear was fasinated with the cloud and voice and second by second he relaxed and gently stroked the man's chest, a bear smile on his face. Then he looked up at the cloud and spoke.
"Lord.........thank you for the food you've provided me".

The Moral Cannibals
by Terry inthere are moral persons and there are cannibals.
would you believe there are also moral cannibals?.
morality, after all, is highly regarded as the highest human value found in persons of great virtue.

Great Post Terry!
I often refer to the witnesses as a death cult for the very reasons you outlined. Blood and Armageddon. Though if banality could kill .............7,000,000 witnesses would have died by now.
What is so easily apparent to understand, when one looks at the images of Jonestown, is how dangerous blind allegiance can be ..... One look and a normal person reaches out to their loved ones and vows no one will ever be allowed to do that to their family. Even a JW understands how wrong Jonestown was but they recoil at the thought that their Blood doctrine kills many more people each and every year. When a person turns down a life saving procedure in favor of a half baked doctrine they put themselves, their mate, their children in their own personal Jonestown.
If there is a difference it's hard to see it except............. may be that's the difference............ we don't get to see a thousand dead JW's each year because they die needlessly in private not in a field.....but die they do.

Christians Please Explain
by AK - Jeff insince leaving all organized religion, all superstition, all acceptance of deity, i have a terrible time truly understanding 'religious' thought.. i really do.. how is it possible for thinking people to just accept, without proof, all they accept?
this morning i overheard a conversation between two christians in a coffee shop.
they say to me 'dad, what's wrong with just being a nice, good person?
-
Giordano
"I am referring to 'religion', and it's hold on mankind with it's irrational superstition and it's reliance on myths, legends and books written by people who lived in a time where science was not able to explain reality. Additionally, the ignorance of culture that continues to tolerate it. I find it absurd really, to trust such nonsense as life guidance."
AK-Jeff you've got it right. It is nonsense.

What is your truth?
by iamwhoiam inwhat is your truth since you left the wt?.
im still in physically, but mentally left many years ago.
i'm just in for my family as is the usual story.
-
Giordano
When I realized it wasn't the truth I also thought you'd have to be the village idiot to accept what was called the truth.....so what did that make me? I was young my wife was young and it took a while to reject those teachings and reconcile our feelings for freedom with our love of family members and close friends who were still in.
We left in our early 20's and never looked back. My first new truth was get out by hook or by crook and take your loved ones with you. After leaving............ my next truth was that I was a gentle cynic who didn't care if there was a god or not. My truth says that the bible was written by men and was not inspired and god was a man made concept. My next truth was be responsibile but embrace life, read and learn. Cultivate good friends and live in a real community not a KH.

Shocked at what my 3 year old just asked me
by jwfacts inme - jehovah?
who is jehovah?.
me - oh.. zac - are you happy with me dad for remembering jehovah.

Simply tell your MIL that you and your wife will instruct your child about god and religion and that you'd prefer that she doesn't.
The Problem is two fold the JW'S will indoctrinate your child if the child is exposed to their meetings and their point of view. Secondly the child is way too young to have to deal with these phony big picture issues.
