by Dawn2011 ini've been visiting this forum for quite awhile now, reading as much as i can about others in situations similar to mine.
i've learned alot but i think i am ready to share and will really appreciate whatever advice/thoughts anyone has to offer.. i'm a "wordly" gal (non-demoninational christian) and have been dating a jw for a year.
he has been a witness for about 34 yrs but has been inactive the past two due to the way he and his ex were treated when she was df'd for cheating/alcoholism.

Welcome Dawn2011!
Keep reading and make up your own mind. A very good idea to read "Crisis of conscience" ; it will help you understand. Also have a look at the website jwfacts its written for people considering joining but provides great overall coverage.
FWIW, I'm a non-jw with friends and family in. At a low point i did start to "study" with two jw ladies but the material was too silly. I believe i'm now "bad association".
I hope you learn to understand how much your man is still in the thrall of this cult, and that you make the right decision. All my best wishes.

Kourtney, great quote, 2Peter 2:1 says it all. To me what Jesus teaches in the NT completely replaces the harsh genocidal God of the OT (I do sorta believe in God, but ordinary men wrote the Bible, and their understanding was shaped by their capacity and the time they lived in).
If we follow the golden rule before any additional man-made rules we can't go far wrong. And if the jws did that, they couldn't shun their family and friends.

Strange that is exactly what has occured-All the men who made mistakes in the JW org are dead, and thus have paid the wages of sin. But one thing they have never done is stand in opposition to Jehovah. . .
Are you sure they haven't? The pedeophiles whose crimes were covered by closed court settlements didn't stand against Jehovah? All the men who are now alive in Brooklyn don't make mistakes?
Utter nonsense!

Hi again Kourtney!
It's from Deuteronomy 18:20. See, you don't have to be jw to know the Bible! And, no, of course it's not the "true religion". Otherwise it would stay true and not keep flip flopping around with new rules and interpretations.
That said, all religions have changed over time. Man's understanding of spirituality and ethics, does, IMO, "evolve. But be very wary of anyone who tells you that they have the "truth", and all you need to do is follow! God gave us brains and a conscience for good reasons.

Hi again Snowboarder, - a nice virtual beer won't mess up your training!
Your video has just made me tear up at work! You express yourself very clearly and I feel your pain.
Whatever jw's say and how they interpret the Bible, your heart is not evil. That's just cultspeak for "do what we say, not what you feel to be right".
The Watchtower breaks up families, whatever they claim; I know this from personal experience. "Worldly" partners and relatives cannot compromise with them, because in the end they utterly believe to wt is 100% right and any other viewpoint is totally wrong and satanic. They need to be in "good standing" because otherwise they will be lost when the (late and non-existent) Armageddon comes, so they are controlled by fear.
Stay strong, pursue your sport and get a good education, and keep contact with your grandparents whenever you can! Once you attain independance, no-one can tell you who you are allowed to talk to.
PM me anytime. Also make friends of your own age and discover non-jw socialising. (I'm a middle aged Aussie female with a Croatian partner).
Best wishes always, Retro

To "Fade" - What does this mean?
by AFreeSpirit ini have never been a jw but i have close friends who are.
what does it mean when they say that they want to fade?.
-
Retrovirus
Hi AFreeSpirit,
I've never been a jw either. "Fading" means backing quietly out of the jw community, quickly or slowly, rather than disassociating from it. This is usually done to maintain contact with relatives and/or friends who are still active. If a person disassociates or is disfellowshipped, believing jws are required to avoid contact with them.

Water Canopy? Huh?
by Mr. Falcon in*** w80 11/15 p. 23 par.
4 jehovah of armies to the rescue!
the fact that today we do not have a vast water canopy suspended high up in space and all around our globe and thus blocking direct sunlight, moonlight and starlight is because jehovah saw what was going on down here upon his terrestrial footstool and took action.

Hi DJeggnog,
Since you have digressed from the OP topic of the discredited water canopy, to the possibility of the Flood and the Ark happening at all, I'll make no apology for responding to your points.
. . . out of an estimated 1,300,000 species, 60% of which being of the insect variety, Noah didn’t really need to make accommodation for as many pairs of animals as some might imagine, considering inbreeding among the different "kinds" of animals . .
Still these timesome long sentences. We non-genious lurkers strive for of brevity. Now when you say "inbreeding", do you mean "interbreeding"? So kinds are not really distinct? Heresy!! Also, what is the point of the 60% insects? Were they not on the Ark?
Noah was commanded not just to take pairs of unclean animals, but sevens of clean animals and birds, so not all of these sevens would survive the global deluge since Noah would be offering sacrifices for the duration of their "voyage" of deliverance
Noah offered sacrifices during the voyage? In the closed ark? In the pouring rain? Do give a Bible reference for this!
for once God closed the door to the ark, God could have quelled all dissent among the animal kingdom to their feeling a bit cooped up by putting them all into a state of hibernation for an extended period of time (like a year).
It doesn't say this in the Bible either, does it? Also a few months of hibernation leave animals scrawny and starving. What would a year of hibernation do? Or did the tigers and alligators "evidently" eat the manna or whatever God provided?
Not an idea; what I know is based upon what the Bible teaches as to the water canopy as its contents were responsible for the destruction of the ancient world in which Noah and those of his family survived the global deluge caused by the emptying out of that "watery deep
The water canopy is not Biblical, nor is it an interpretation unique to the Watchtower. It is a man-made interpretation discredited by an understanding of basic physics.
I am one of the few people that posted to this thread for the purpose of clarifying what Jehovah's Witnesses believe and teach about this water canopy, not so much for the benefit of the OP, but for the benefit of the lurkers
There may of course be some lurkers that are lulled by your posts into believing that there are rational answers to the problems raised by the water canopy "theory". It would help that they probably cannot read or understand these posts. Poor souls! Is that why you make them so long and confusing?

I don't belong here anymore
by sizemik inthese are some things i have been thinking about .
.. when i first found this site i registered immediately ... never was a "lurker" ... and i've been here about six months.. everyone was very warm welcoming and i felt at home very quickly ... very pleasant at the time, but as time has progressed i look back and feel a bit "love-bombed" ... much like a religion i used to belong to.. i have found that this site is a bit "cliquey" ... groups of posters frequent at similar times and enjoy their familiarity with each other and that's great ... but they also sometimes exhibit a coolness toward those outside their clique ... almost as if your 'post count' is the first thing by which you are "judged" ... much like a religion i used to belong to.
some posters develop a personal dislike for others and not only jump on their threads but even deliver the odd "slap" on unrelated threads to increase the discomfort for the object of their dislike ... not unlike a religion i once belonged to.. some posters even follow others around the board looking to counter or use snide or clever put downs at every opportunity ... a kind of intellectual "rivalry" that was common to those in that religion i used to belong to.. many posters like to use 'in-house' jargon and labels eg; "newbies" for those recently joined.

Hi Sizemik,
You'll be missed! Hope you reconsider.
As a non-jw (and I definitely feel like an outsider ) this place helps me understand the jws in my life. What I'm learning is that there is no jw and worldly difference - except in the minds of active jws. Cliques, gossip, judgementalism and personal preferences happen everywhere. Especially I'm familiar with them in my family, which is another reason to be here.
What I'm trying to say is, its not what we encounter, or what it reminds us of. I need to figure out the best way of understanding and dealing with it. This is particularly important if it pushes my buttons.
Good luck in any case,
Retro
