What 'hooked' you... and what made you leave?
by s0rt3d ini wasn't born in.
i got hooked in as a teenager.
was going through a tough time, wondered why we exist, why god wasn't doing anything to solve man's problems, if there was a true religion and, hey-presto, a jw classmate showed up with book that not only asked the questions i was asking but answered them too!.

My parents joined when I was a young child. I never questioned the teachings since I was a relatively happy and busy JW. Research while preparing a public talk raised some doubts on the WTS honesty. I found many instances where secular sources were misquoted to support WT arguments. The changes in the blood policy, the new light on the overlapping generations and the fact that all of these changes are accepted by everyone without scriptural evidence made me realize I was in a cult. Plus the fact that the end has been so close for the last 130 years...I am fading and hope to help close family members to come to the same realization.

Sorry I have to ask, but, what exactly does a special pioneer do?
by dgp inyep, i'm the worldly who needs explanations about simple things.
i will appreciate it if someone told me what exactly a special pioneer does, and what a person gets out of being one, in terms of watchtower politics.. thanks..

Special pioneers are assigned by the WTS to a specific territory, usually where there are few publishers or where there is a special need. They receive a monetary allowance from the Society since they devote all of their time to the preaching work. They are almost like missionaries but without going to Gilead (missionary training). When I was a child many special pioneers moved to our area, learned a new language and took the lead in establishing new congregations.

Strange Memorial Story
by OnTheWayOut ina couple of quick strange memorial stories.. the elder giving the talk one year went astray and talked about the comet, hale bop possibly being a celestial sign or some nonsense like that.
he spent a good ten minutes on this.
it put the crowd into silence, although he was a great speaker.

OTWO,
I had the same feeling when I attended the last DC - the Sunday morning drama was about the life of Christians that fled from Jerusalem after the Roman armie left the area for no apparent reason. After a while some wanted to go back to be reunited with family members, to enjoy the comfort of their homes or to resume their business. Others were encouraged by elders not to return...those who did not obey were struck by tragedy! It also showed an elder doing shepherding calls and keeping congregation records on their preaching activity. I thought to myself: where in the Bible do we find any detail of what life was like for those who obeyed Jesus and left Jerusalem after 66 CE? How can you tell what is true and what is fiction? It didn't matter since everyone said that the drama was so touching and such an inspirtation for us during these last days.

Will there be bars in the New System?
by undercover inwith apologies to laverite.... growing up as a jw i always imagined the new system (tm) as being just like it's presented in the literature (tm).
i thought we'd all be hanging around with dorky looks on our faces, petting tigers and panda bears all day while we eat fruit and practice our dorky grins.. peronsally, i've never seen an illustration from the society showing modern conveniences.
the people in the illlustrations are always working in a garden somewhere (while wearing meeting clothes) or looking heavenward with a frontal lobotomy smile.. i think to be able to survive in this new world, i would need alcohol and lots of it.

1000 years of Bethel-like life under the direction of the "princes"...imagine what could happen if elders really had full power over the flock.

what are the rewards for not being a witness any longer
by Curtains inif the carrot and stick aspect of being jehovahs witnesses upset you how do you reclaim your desire for reward?
i'm assumng that you all agree with me that feeling rewarded is a basic human desire.
how much effort do you think we should put into trying to make our lives rewarding?

I am no longer hounded by my conscience for not doing enough in service, missing meetings or thinking differently than my "brothers". Throughout my life I always did things that bothered the congregation (and my conscience), like wearing a mustache when others didn't, being the only one riding a motorcycle or driving a convertible car, playing hockey a few times a week in an industrial league, accepting promotions at work and travelling for business. That may have been a reason why I was never more than a MS...but who cares now! Last week I read a book that wasn't edited by the WTS - for the first time in decades...it was about the life of a professional hockey player who lost it all due to alcool, drugs and gambling...and guess what? His mother was a chronically-depressed and overmedicated Jehovah's Witness!

Thanks...I just want to modify my profile and I can't access my account. Since I created the account specifically for this site I can't remember how I formulated the never too late part of the e-mail address....so after several failed attempts to log in my only alternative is to have the administrator PM me the exact formulation and from there I may be able to log back in.

Retro
Most of my "in" family don't know what's going on except for my sister and I asked her to keep it to herself not to sadden our mother. Since my father's death her life is preaching. and meetings...nothing else. The latest wedding anniversary card she send us read like the annoucements at the KH: we are having the COs visit next week, I am so busy in service and hang in there because the end is so near...the WT is all her life and the same goes for my brother who is an elder in her congregation. So I am keep it from them as long as I can.
