I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that since dear EP (peace to you, as well, dear one!)... "knew" what he was talking about, he also knew this and so there really was no reason TO respond: he either knew it... or would figure it out once he re-read what he posted.

You assumed correctly, I do know what I am talking about. Hallel is a transliteration, letter substitution. Just because it is pronounced similarly in modern language has NOTHING to do with how it was pronounced or spelled in ancient Hebrew. Similarly, Allah is not spelled or prounounced similarly in 600 year old Arabic. Trying to compare the words in modern English with a Latin alphabet is utterly and absolutely useless for historical comparisons.

That is one school of thought, dear EP (again, peace to you, dear one!)... and actually, it is the one that furthers my point. With the article, it appears as al-?ilahah. Let me ask you: when you pronounce that "word"... what do you HEAR? "Al il ah"... or "Al il hah". In Arabic/Aramaic, it means for some "there is no god but Allah." For others, it means "there is no god except the one [true] god." However, I will share with you what my Lord had shared with ME... and that is that the term came from "Al (there is no) il (el, or god)... [but] Jah." In turn THIS phrase came from the Hebrew "hal el a Jah"... or... "hallel u Jah".

Except that when you pronounce that translation, you are doing so in modern english from words that no one actually knows exactly how they were pronounced from two DISTANTLY related and different alphabets. Doesn't hold water to just try to sound it out close enough in modern english.

I would NOT lie to you about this, dear one. I speak neither Hebrew, Arabic, or Aramaic. My Lord, however, not only speaks all three... but also knows the evolution/transition of all three. From Hebrew TO Arabic and Aramaic (a form of Hebrew and Chaldean).

I don't think you are lying at all. You are just wrong and there is no shame in that. If your LORD really can speak all three of those languages, why is he relying on sounding it out in modern english?

it used to for me, and now it doesn't.. i'm not sure how i was able to accept that argument now that i don't, but perhaps it was connected with my increasing compassion for people and their personal suffering as i've grown older.. now it seems like a sick excuse.

more like a bar-bet with satan and all of creation suffers.. i read paul's words and he has no rejoiner except to say in effect "sucks to be a vessel of wrath...glad i'm not one, but who are you to complain anyway, huh?

who's bigger, smarter and more powerful than you, you, you complaining vessel of wrath, you.

it used to for me, and now it doesn't.. i'm not sure how i was able to accept that argument now that i don't, but perhaps it was connected with my increasing compassion for people and their personal suffering as i've grown older.. now it seems like a sick excuse.

Free Will and Foreknowledge

hi, i'm a new member that enjoys civil debate, so i thought i'd just throw a topic out there.. if we take the standard, contemporary judeo-christian god (all-knowing, all powerful, and perfectly good in every possible way) and attempt to incorporate free will, we end up with a contradiction.

an all knowing being knows everything that has occured, is occuring and will occur, if otherwise then we can not consider this being to know all.

if god knows all that will happen, then he knows our decisions, as well as the outcomes of those decisions.

It's not necessarily for everyone, Tammy, for sure. I am more of a savory/salty snack or dessert person, a cheeseboard for dessert to me is one of the best things ever.

I don't really like raisins. I LOVE fresh figs. Dates are OK prepared a certain way. Once I had dates stuffed with goat cheese wrapped in grape leaves and bacon with a chocolate sauce drizzled over them. Holy Mary sweet mother of Jesus was that stuff good.

But seriously, the brie with the bacon and warm brie...the fig preserves don't need to be much. They add a touch of sweetness and a hint of dark fruity flavors to the cheese and bacon.

Of course, that was my dessert on a camping trip, after grilling filets over a hardwood coal fire. The next night I made a lamb stew with rosemary, thyme and fresh anaheim and bell peppers and onions.

I don't make camp food like normal people.
