  new york (reuters) - biopure corp. (nasdaq:bpur - news), a biotechnology company seeking to commercialize a substitute blood product, on monday said a late-stage clinical trial showed the product is comparatively safe.. the phase iii trial was conducted to determine whether the blood substitute, called hemopure, met its "primary endpoint,'' which was to show that patients receiving the product were as safe as those receiving donated red blood cells.. "this clinical milestone is an important step toward addressing the critical issue of blood availability on a worldwide basis,'' carl rausch, the company's chief executive, said in a statement.. the news comes two weeks after cambridge, massachusetts-based biopure was accused by online news site thestreet.com of delaying and covering up negative trial results.

  the report sent the stock plummeting 11 percent.

  i've been given some sketchy information that says the cbc is presenting its program straight talk tonight, possibly 7 pm eastern time.. in that program james kostelniuk's book and personal story will be covered.. "sheep among wolves," the story of murder in a jehovah's witness community.

  the latest inside u.s. figures reveal that 86% of jw children leave the fold, with some 29% who eventually come back for reasons of family ties, most never "reaching out.

  boston priests and other clergy have been havens for secrets, virtually beyond the reach of civilian authority or law for thousands of years.. but after widespread reports of sexual abuse of children by priests and a middleton church worker, lawmakers are moving to get rid of a long-held clerical privilege in the name of protecting children.. on tuesday, lawmakers gave initial approval to a bill that would require priests and other clergy to report sexual abuse of children to law enforcement if they learn about it outside of the confessional.. we need to make the hierarchy of whatever religion understand that they cant allow the people under them to get away with the things theyve gotten away with, said rep. patricia haddad, d-somerset.

  maybe we need a reminder from time to time that the fds manual includes a proviso to "be wise as serpents" in their war strategy.
