Pink slips at Bethel

does anyone still have any friends at bethel?

it seems that there is a massive layoff at bethel in all three american complexes.

the layoff is supposed to affect everyone between the ages of 35-50 or maybe 60. i feel sorry for persons who chose to stay there, they gave up going to college, possible job offers or making a decent amount of money, having children, the list can go on and on.

Still waiting for proof, more than just anecdotal evidence, of the "massive layoffs" at Bethel....

By the way SilentWatcher, I have been meaning to inquire....has there been any further development in the Worker's Comp case/situation? (See the old thread on JWD) It was stated in the news article that the WT appealed the decision and according to the NY WC board webpage, it should have been scheduled and the rehearing should have been held by now.

Does anyone in New York know anything further about this case/ruling? I never saw it posted on the NY WC board webpage.

PS: the term "pink slips" shouldn't be confused with the same term (archaic) for the ownership papers, title of an automobile or for sexy undergarments for that matter.

Anyone do Charity work?????

there is a few things that i am involved in, and have been for quite sometime.

i feel that it is important to raise my children in this type of environment, so that they see outside of the box, and not be so closed minded on our surroundings.

many are in need, and it is easy to close our eyes and forget.. my main charity work will always benefit children.. this weekend i have gathered many things from my house such as kids clothes, shoes, jackets...and i bought many blankets, cook ware, along with money etc... this will all go to easter seals.

I volunteer and sit on the Board of Directors as well as serve as an officer and chair of the PR committee of the only charity dedicated to fighting Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC or primary liver cancer), the 4th leading cause of cancer related deaths in the world.

We are a young charity, but already our patient education brochure is available in more than a dozen hospitals and clinics, and is pretty much the only easy to understand and brief resource for patients and their families about HCC. Our PEB is available in multiple languages.

We are developing other resources and eventually will be doing a video or two along with a ton of other educational projects. Eventually, we hope to be able to fund research.

In addition to that, I also volunteer and am a member of the Los Angeles Opera Speaker's Bureau and periodically deliver talks to various groups of all ages in the community and schools. (I have to say that being a Witness and the ministry school and the ministry helped a lot to learn to speak to audiences and individuals and overcome any fears with respect to that, as well as taught me to think on my feet and deal with questions.)

Attended the Circuit Assembly - the work IS slowing down.

both were obviously children of jw's.

the last circuit assembly there were at least a dozen.

Reflecting what Sandy said...my baptism in 1990 at the Woodland Hills, Calif. Assembly Hall only had four of us baptismal candidates and we were a circuit of about 1500 or more.

When you refered to 900 and said "district" did you mean Circuit and also that seems a bit small, even for a Circuit - so yeah that there were only 2 is unusual but not really outside the normal fluctuation.

Still as others have pointed out here and elsewhere, at a macro level, numbers are down.

Rent vs. Buying a house

i have started thinking about buying a house again.

something that drives me nuts is the fact that i can't seem to get a straight answer out of anyone as to whether or not owning a house would be financially better than renting an apartment.. things to take into consideration:how much i pay in rent.how much rent increases each year.how much i pay in renters insurance.how much a mortgage would be.how much pmi or an 80 / xx mortgage would be.how much i would have to take from or borrow from my 401ks and iras for a down payment.how much i will have to pay in penalties for taking money from my 401ks and iras.how much money l will loose by not having that 401k money earning interest.how much maintenance on the property will cost.how much insurance will cost.how much i will be paying in property taxes.how much in "freebies" i will get from the seller (they will pay $xxx in closing costs if i use their mortgage company).other crap i haven't thought of yet.. it seems like everyone i talk to has their own agenda and they all give me different results based on they want me to do so they will get more money from me.

BTW, Don't raid your 401(k) to buy real property. The amount you are permitted to withdraw may make your downpayment, but won't be enough to buy (probably even for Texas) outright and in the end you are going to hurt your investment.

Buy the house if you can but find other ways to finance.

If you can afford to buy a house in your area it is the best thing you could ever do. Of course try to buy one that won't be a money pit or present a lot of hidden costs (i.e. do your homework and make sure all the inspections are good) but buying a house is a real no brainer.

there are many around LA. I have never had a desire to go to one, though I do like hotwings a lot. an acquaintance of mine used to have a roommate that worked there and so I met her and a bunch of her co-workers. Pretty girls but gorgeous girls are a dime a dozen in LA and since the flexible schedule of waitressing/waiting tables works for many wannabe actors who are going on casting calls, in Los Angeles, it is not uncommon to have some of the most beautiful waitresses serving you at any decent restaurant.

I think it is funny that the airline endeavour went out of business pretty quickly.

I am not a big fan of the hooters uniform which I find pretty ugly, even though I otherwise like orange.

If you have a Rock Bottom near you, I think the women and their uniform there are much more sexy.

To me, taking a date to Hooters doesn't seem either impressive nor classy. And if you were just looking to go to a fun place, it seems like there would be so many more fun places to take her to.

Impress your date with yourself not with your server.

i do not agree with your reading of "policy".

i base this on personal experience on a couple of fronts.

1. i have yet to come across a single verifiable of a cover up.

Just a note regarding SteveNYC's excerpt of the Holly case. (I hadn't read this thread before so this is the first I saw it) It is on page 2.

Anyway, I think it bears pointing out that what is excerpted and underlying was the DISSENTING opinion of one of the judges and as such it does not reflect the holding of the case nor the opinion of the majority (other 2 judges).

In essence, the underlying conclusions and inferences are merely his reasoned conclusions and inferences but may not represent fact and do not represent any legal findings.

Additionally, even these dissenting comments do not indicate a "cover-up" (as Beep-Beep refers to) but rather they indicate that this judge believed the Elders culpable - something very different.

in my case, it was always the length of the meetings that bothered me.. no matter what meeting it is, you have to get there prepared, and that means lots of time reading the darn literature.. another thing that would irritate me, is all the magazines that come in faster than i can read.. i'll let you guys add to this list.. .
