Okay, I concede that maybe it didn't happen, but think about what is said, not whether the situation actually happened. He makes some really good points on rights and freedoms.

This was sent to me today. I thought it was an interesting statement on how far America has come. (?) Sorry it's kind of jumbled. When I try to fix it, it disappears.
This is a statement that was read over the PA system at the football
game at Roane County High School, Kingston, Tennessee by school Principal
Jody McLoud, on September 1, 2000. I thought it was worth sharing with the
world. It clearly shows just how far this country has gone in the wrong
direction."It has always been the custom at Roane County High School football
games to say a prayer and play the National Anthem to honor God and Country.
Due to a recent ruling by the Supreme Court, I am told that saying a Prayer
is a violation of Federal Case Law. As I understand the law at this time, I
can use this public facility to approve of sexual perversion and call it an
alternate lifestyle, and if someone is offended, that's OK.
I can use it to condone sexual promiscuity by dispensing condoms and
calling it safe sex. If someone is offended, that's OK. I can even use this
public facility to present the merits of killing an unborn baby as a viable
means of birth control. If someone is offended, no problem.
I can designate a school day as earth day and involve students in
activities to religiously worship and praise the goddess, mother earth, and
call it ecology. I can use literature, videos and presentations in the
classroom that depict people with strong, traditional Christian convictions
as simple minded and ignorant and call it enlightenment.
However, if anyone uses this facility to honor God and ask Him to bless
this event with safety and good sportsmanship, Federal Case Law is violated.
This appears to be inconsistent at best, and at worst, diabolical.
Apparently, we are to be tolerant of everything and anyone except God
and His Commandments. Nevertheless, as a school principal, I frequently ask
staff and students to abide by rules, which they do not necessarily agree.
For me to do otherwise would be inconsistent at best, and at worst,
hypocritical. I suffer from that affliction enough unintentionally. I
certainly do not need to add an intentional transgression. For this reason,
I shall, "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's," and refrain from
praying at this time.
However, if you feel inspired to honor, praise and thank God, and ask
Him in the name of Jesus to bless this event, please feel free to do so. As
far as I know, that's not against the law----yet."
One by one, the people in the stands bowed their heads, held hands with
one another, and began to pray. They prayed in the stands. They prayed in
the team huddles. They prayed at the concession stand. And they prayed in
the announcer's box.
The only place they didn't pray was in the Supreme Court of the United
States of America - the seat of "justice" in the one nation under God.
Somehow, Kingston, Tennessee remembered what so many have forgotten..we are
given the Freedom OF Religion, not the Freedom FROM Religion.
Praise God that His remnant remains! Celebrate Jesus in 2001! Jesus
said, "If you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you before my Father." -

Well..........I can't say whether you've changed or not, since I didn't know you before. But, the personality I have seen would have caused lots of trouble as a JW!! So, I assume you are much freer with your expressions now, and more independent too.
My little ones just got here, so I have to go. Talk later, doll babe.

Hi Bill. Mothers have a way, like no other person on earth, to make you feel guilty about their health. I know because I have a mother like that too. When she found out about our change in attitude six years ago, she went to bed, pounding on her head, begging me to change my mind. She said "all I ever wanted was to have my family with me forever." Guilt, guilt, guilt. I told her then that I would never change and that you cannot 'unring a bell'. She stayed in bed for two weeks. My fault. Of course she is 88 years old, so she can't blame me for all of her health problems, but she tries. The way I have to deal with her, is to see her very little. She only lives a mile away from me, but even at her advanced age, she never misses a beat to put me on a guilt trip for something. I know that on her death bed, she will try to make me change my mind, or promise her something. I will have to disappoint her.
She made a great concession to me one day. She said "I know you so well, and there is no way you could have continued to do something that you didn't believe in 100%." I about fell out of my chair.
So, I think, given time, your Mom may change her mind too. (Mom hasn't by the way) Like JT told you about his mother in law. Just wait until the Dateline show! She will see that you have gotten some national attention!! As to looking into your eyes and seeing how you really are: I look into your eyes, and see mirth, and joy and happiness, and you are so kind and caring, and really funny too. You are a real joy to be around, and exude satisfaction in what you are doing. Keep it up. Moms will be Moms will be Moms. Etc.

American Identity
by Amazing ini enjoyed englishman's post about americans vs europeans.
i chose to start a new thread because i want to take the topic in another direction.. the usa is still a young nation and an enigma.
the nation was created by european settlers who wanted to get away from things they did not like about europe, especially religious intolerance and inflexible governments, and have the opportunity to build a new future.

And how about La Penita? Really quaint little town without a tourist attraction in sight. About 40 miles North of Puerto Vallarta. We camped near there for 10 days about 20 years ago. I think we saw the real Mexico. You HAVE to know Spanish, because they do NOT know English. Fortunately my sister in law, had a big Spanish dictionary, and a working knowledge of the language. Her dictionary looked like an Aid book!!

I had to respond here too. I have had a similar experience, in having to care for elderly parents who didn't plan for retirement because the end was coming. My parents divorced in 1969 when I was pregnant with my third child. My father had a large estate, which he practically handed over the entire thing to my mother, who promptly remarried. She married a wonderful man, that we all adore, but who is now dying of cancer and has Alzheimer's disease. He is in a home. Mom now has no resources, other than her Social Security, because she 'blew' all the money because 1975 was coming, so why not spend it all. How anyone can go through that much money in less than 10 years is a miracle. She didn't share a dime either. The IRS did get about $100,000 though, thank you very much. Dear old Dad, is in great health, but blind, lives with us. He has nothing, but Social Security income. So much for having been a very successful doctor. Poor investments, and victimized by every scam artist around, until we moved him in with us, two years ago. Mom is a true believer, and I will say this about the dubs. They are very attentive to her and to her husband, and they are very much loved. Of course we were all in the same congregation too, so since we are no longer 'in the truth', they think we are pond scum, so they think they are taking up the slack. And they are, to tell the truth. One of the sisters gives Mom $100 a month to help her with her expenses now, that she has lost her husband's Social Security. Her husband's ex wife does the same (not a dub), as do we and our children, too. My father even chips in $100 a month for her since his SS is twice what hers is. So, she doesn't have to move in with one of us, which she really doesn't want to do. Anyway, my point is that Mom's congregation is helping her. I would be torn in another direction, if they weren't there for her.

A short statement on the long shift
by Preston inas a sit writing this i will say that i am possibly going through one of the toughest times of my life right now.
i have recently told the elders of my congregation that i have identified myself as "queer" and it has been one of the toughest roads i have ever had to walk.
i am not trying to offend anyone on the boards by telling you this but i feel that it's important to live honestly and my decission to "come out" to people in the congregation is one based on trying to live honestly.

Preston........I admire your courage, and I just can't even imagine what you must be going through, since I am not gay. But I can imagine the courage it took to tell the elders. As Francoise said, they are not trained to deal with this, and will no doubt do everything they can to get rid of you. This is just not a subject they want to deal with. They will try to correct your "thinking". Funny isn't it?
I have a gay niece, who was just here with her friend to take her grandfather, who lives with us, to breakfast, for Father's Day. She is wonderful.........not a JW. (she was raised a JW, but never embraced it for herself) Her friend is also a great gal. They are part of our family, and I am not about to deprive myself of her association just because she is different, and our whole family feels that way too. Even my militant JW mother welcomes both of them to her home. Who can figure? I think she is more welcome than I am, actually.
I hope all of us on this board, can help you to feel like a valuable person. You are certainly welcome here.

Hi Kathy, I will advise you to give up on the Trinity issue. It is rarely, if ever, successful to convince a person either way, on that subject. If you believe it, you won't be convinced it isn't a Bible truth, and vice versa. Just for the record, I am no longer a JW, but I do not believe in the Trinity. I just think it is unimportant. I believe that God is God, Jesus is his son, and the holy spirit is something of another nature entirely. Jesus is/was more than a man, for sure, and I believe the Bible teaches that he was a God. But the Trinity doctrine is steeped in Catholicism, and cannot be clearly found in the Bible. But, just like JW's, you can make a case for it, by finding various scriptures out of context, but even those are more supportive of a duality, not a Trinity, because they rarely mention the holy spirit. Just my 2 cents worth, to quote another poster.
As I said, I also don't think it's important.
A person who is studying with JW's is taught early on, that there will be people, like you, who will try to dissuade them with clever words, and misrepresenting the 'real truth'. In other words, to her, you are a liar. The best thing to do, I think, is to let her know you are there for her if and when she learns the truth of things. I have found that you can't force feed them anything. I have tried for six years with my mother, to no avail. Some will see it and some won't.
