WTS Deception on Alternative Military Service

until 1996 the watchtower society's official policy was that a young jw man who volunteered for alternative military service, rather than being imprisoned or letting a court sentence him to some kind of alternative civilian service, had violated christian neutrality and therefore was either to be disfellowshipped or declared to have voluntarily disassociated himself from the jw organization.

beginning in 1978, the governing body voted on changing this policy a number of times, and generally had a simple majority who voted for change, but because the gb had a policy that all changes needed a 2/3 majority, and that was never reached until 1996, the policy remained.. in 1996, it appears that jehovah changed his mind, and so via divine direction instructed the governing body to change its policy.

My husband was the WT conductor when this article was studied at the KH, here. He asked the question, at the beginning, if anyone could tell him the Society's previous view on alternative service. No one raised their hands. So, I did. Pre-planned. He wanted that information given. (we were both trying to get out of the Borg at that time)

It was so funny though, part way through the study, a young woman, who had moved here from Romania, raised her hand, and said that in Romania the brothers have been working in the coal mines, as an alternative to the military for many years, and she thought it was so nice that they could do it in America now. I about exploded, inside. My husband had an amused look on his face too, and just thanked her for her comment. No one else thought a thing of it.
So much for the worldwide unity? I don't think so!!!

in compliance with the scriptures, however, members can be expelled for serious unchristian conduct, such as stealing, drunkenness, or adultery, if they do not repent and cease such actions.

I love the idea, but can't stomach the thought of going into a KH again. Someone do this, and let us know how it turns out.

What I fail to understand, is how do they think any of us will ever want to come back when they treat us like this? What is there about their behavior that makes it so attractive, that we want back in? I've gone over this with my mother so many times, I can't even count them anymore. She just smiles at me. That means, she can't think of anything to say.........or she gets up and goes into her bedroom. I fixed her good, for that one. The last time she did it, I left. She called me immediately when I got home to tell me she hadn't wanted me to leave, but to just stop talking about "those things", whatever that means.

Big Jim, Thanks for posting Thomas Paine's words. I am plowing through The Age of Reason, and it is slow reading, but really amazing information. Everyone should read it, and maybe it would be the next "Crisis of Conscience." hahahahaha But, then Thomas Paine was first, wasn't he?

that the wts is nothing more than a business is painfully obvious in the way many brothers seek 'positions'.

i was always highly doubtful of the 'appointed by holy spirit' bs that we were always fed.

appointments often came down to who kissed up the most to the decision-makers.

Simon, my brother and I were talking about this the other day, and he made the same point you did. He said "where else can a blue collar worker, dress up in a suit, and teach, and lead, and control?" Sure, there are exceptions to that, but most are just exactly that, construction workers, mechanics, and other tradesman, window washers, janitors.........hahahahaha. It's no wonder they love it.

I think the ones who are educated and rise to the top are the ones who will eventually learn the REAL truth. At least that has been our experience. The ones who leave are the ones who are in a position where they need to really study hard, or they just like to read the Bible. Eventually the truth rises to the top, so to speak.

back to basics

as soeone raised in the truth my whole life i am struggling with a basic doctrinal issue.

the issue has to do with universal sovreignty and the ransom sacrifice.

let me try to illustrate by way of analogy:.

Here is another question I asked over and over again, through the years, and no one could ever give me a satisfactory answer: "If Jesus came to the earth to die a ransom, why were the Jews condemned for killing him?"

I assumed there was a logical answer for it, and just pushed it back on the shelf, but too much got stacked on that shelf, with Abraham sacrificing Isaac, Lot having sex with his daughters (gross), Lot offering his daughters to the mob, Rachel and Leah giving their maids to Jacob for childbearing, etc. etc. Too much didn't add up, and still doesn't. No one can answer those questions for me, in a way that makes sense.
