I moved to the other end of the country in 1979. Harassment has been minimal and far, far in the past. My daughter chose not to be a JW(!), but her dad still is.

Is College Worth It? Clearly, New Data Say...
by NewYork44M ina new set of income statistics answers those questions quite clearly: yes, college is worth it, and its not even close.
for all the struggles that many young college graduates face, a four-year degree has probably never been more valuable.. here is the article from the new york times:.

Education is not entirely about making money. It should impart the ability to be more sensitive and understanding of one's fellow humans. It also should enhance one's appreciation of the finer things of life. As an Appalachian American, I had a wonderful childhood in the wilds of rural America. I realize now that I would have loved to learn about great art, great music and great literature! We had the Bible and a radio, which was wonderful, but there's more to life!
Personally, I think a skilled trade is fine for earning a living, but there's also more to life than working to survive.
troubled mind: ditto to what jgnat said. I'm so excited for her!

Has your trust in charity been shaken lately?
by suavojr inexcerpt from the wt article, http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/2003401.
jehovahs witnesses today are also quick to help when disaster strikes.
during the summer of 2001, for instance, torrential storms caused major flooding in houston, texas, u.s.a. in all, 723 homes of witnesses were damaged to some extent, many of them quite badly.

I used to donate to the Boys' and Girls' Clubs in Reno when I lived there because they gave my granddaughter and other children free child care while their parents attended college classes. They actually had a facility right on campus.
I don't like the Red Cross because I have seen them hound people to repay them for their "charity."
I don't mind giving to Shriners' Hospitals for Children because they gave me hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of free medical treatment in my childhood.
I would check out any charity before handing over my hard-earned cash.
Right now, most of my charitable giving is to UNICEF. I give them $15 a month to feed hungry children. If I have some good fortune, I clean out my pantry and donate food to the Salvation Army.
In general, I think giving locally is probably a safer bet than giving cash to some "charity" that is not where you live.

Musings on recent things
by thedog1 injust some thoughts on all the recent things going on.
i'm still recovering from the whole donation arrangement thing.
was speaking to some relatives who are also jw's and they don't really get what is going on but sense in some way that things are not right.

If you are living an inauthentic life (and it sounds as though you are), you're going to suffer emotionally and physically in ways that likely will surprise you. I was in a job situation once in which I was being criticized and bullied constantly.
During that time, I reached a point when I could not walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night - seriously! I actually bought a walker to use when I would wake up in the middle of the night. Once I left that job, I was able to ditch my tranquilizers AND could move my body again just as I could before the job.Take care of yourself. If it feels wrong, it's best to leave it alone.

Coffee Appreciation
by FL_Panthers inas i'm making my seventh cup for the day, i thought it would be a good idea to have an appreciation thread.
what's the best ground coffee?
beans?.

Mum
I much prefer the perked coffee that my grandmother used to make on the stove to the drip machines.
I was in a conversation once in which someone was describing their coffee-aficionado friend's technique. He bought green coffee beans and roasted them in a popcorn popper, then ground them and made coffee.
As LisaRose pointed out, a French press makes excellent coffee.
Best wishes on your quest for the perfect cup.

STARTING OVER with my Elderette - What Does the Bible REALLY Teach?

So, you should not listen to ex-JW's? Then, is it okay to listen to ex-Mormons, ex-Catholics, ex-anything else? JW's, when I was around them, loved to trade stories about their former churches. Ask her if you should listen to ex-Mormons? I have read two books by ex-Mormon women. Does she think these women lied about their experiences? Why?

I was an elder's wife and was unaware that such a publication existed. Maybe our elders were not given individual copies. Did they have it before 1979?
My elder ex did get called onto the carpet for having me do his ministry school assignments and other paperwork. To be close to an elder is to get as close to the blind, true, corrupt, diseased core of this cult as any woman can.

Ray Franz - is he REALLY a hero?
by baltar447 inon one hand, he's enlightnened many to the internal circle jerk that is the governing body (circa the 70s).. but if there's one reason that can be pointed to for the jws becoming full on cult, it's ray franz.
without him leaving in the manner he did, and stirring the pot, they might not have change the rule (retroatively i might add) on shunning of disassociated ones.
they specifically changed that so they could remove him and eliminate his influence.. his actions single handedly have created the situation where we have to fade, evade, leave marriages, say goodbye to family, just because we don't buy the jw bullsh!t anymore.

confusedandalone: I googled the definition ofn "hero," and here's what I got
Hero: (1) A person, usually a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievement, or noble qualities; (2) a submarine sandwich
How dare people imply that Ray Franz was a sub sandwich!

It's a wacko story, but here goes: When I was about 9 years old, my dad ran into his boss, a JW, doing street work. The boss persuaded my dad to have a "Bible study" in the Let God Be True book. My dad, the son of a country preacher, had never been interested in religion, but understood the value of "ass kissing" and having an inside track with the boss. After a few years, my dad got a great government job and discontinued the "Bible study."
A coupld of years after that, a friend of my dad's was killed in a coal mine cave-in. My dad had some kind of (probably drug-induced) "experience" that made him believe he had been present at his friend's judgment, and he stated that he knew his friend was in heaven. So, we started attending a large Baptist church near our house. The evangelist Jack Van Impe came to that church to have a revival. He gave two sermons against Jehovah's witnesses. Unfortunately, I knew that much of the stuff he sermonized about was not true.
As a result, after years away from any JW contact, I started feeling that there must be a reason why this wealthy evangelist felt so threatened by the little rag-tag groups of JW's in existence at that time. In my 15-year-old brain, I concluded that the JW's must be right and were being "persecuted" by the mighty, wealthy churches of Christendom. I started attending meetings and publishing. It went on for 17 years, until I could no longer tolerate my life as a JW.
