  What about "our female brothers"/sisters? Most JW's have always been female. Unfortunately, we seem to be "meek and teachable" as well, regardless of color. Sonia Johnson once advised women to stay away from church on Sunday to effect change; i.e., if women stopped supporting institutions that oppress them, the oppression would stop. For those who don't know who Sonia Johnson is, she was excommunicated from the Mormon Church in the late 1970's or early 1980's for her activities on behalf of the Equal Rights Amendment. Well, that was the real reason for her excommunication; the church's official reason was some made-up nonsense.

  have you noticed how many jehovah witnesses are in their second and third marriage?

  why is it that a religion that says it's morally pure, has so many people in their second and third marriage?

  of course they say that there are no divorces in the jehovah witnesses, but that doesn't seem true.

  wednesday, you are right! I learned, after I decided to take off the blinders, that the Watchtower organization operates like any other. In fact, there was a case in my old congregation of a sister remarrying her ex-husband when she had been married to someone else in between. Apparently, there is something in the Old Testament which prohibits this behavior, but I can no longer recall the scriptural references. Anyway, some of us were discussing -- well, gossiping about -- the situation in the car group one day. One of the older brothers stated very matter-of-factly, "Well, I know that if I had been the one who did it, they would've got [disfellowshipped] me." This was the first time I had ever heard a witness admit that behavior and attitude are not the criteria used for disfellowshipping. It almost started me to (shudder!) thinking!

  Can you get DF'd for associating with DF'd ones?

  maybe that's a stupid question.

  i always thought you could get disfellowshipped for associating with ones who are disfellowshipped.

  however, i seem to remember something in the "secret" elders manual (which my husband found in it's entirety online a couple of years ago, but which we haven't been able to find again) which said that a person would not get disfellowshipped for associating with a disfellowshipped family member.

  Congratulations, Cygnus! You got on the wrong side of "Jehovah" by exercising your basic right to freedom of association. Watchtower policy reminds me of a phrase repeated over and over in Kurt Vonnegut's book, Breakfast of Champions when confronted with some bizarre reality: "Sometimes I wonder about the Creator of the universe."

  BTW, a few years ago on H2O, you let us in on an essay (for want of a better term) you wrote from a non-religious point of view, about the reasons why one would choose not to join a group such as the JW's. I would appreciate it if you would post that or e-mail it to me. I think that many here might find it useful. Thanks.

  Are You Tough, Or Are You A Baby?

  if you were to describe your temperment, would you say that you are a pretty tough person or a crybaby?

  do you wear your heart on your sleeve and tend to be emotional, or do you let things just bounce off of you?

  I have always been a wimp, and anybody could see it. I was bullied by my sister, battered by my brother and my parents, harassed by employers, betrayed by friends, and learned a lot about myself from all of it. Here's what I have to say about that:

  Wimps are easy targets for every kind of bully or needy person. We rarely get chosen for the fun stuff. We must do our own AND the bully's (bullies') work. We must not cry openly or manifest our more tender feelings lest we subject ourselves to even more ridicule and/or punishment. We will be subject to more criticism than we can take, but we'd better take it and not talk back either. In short, being a wimp is not for sissies.

  There is a website hosted by Tim Field callied bullyonline.org or something similar where there are some sound strategies for dealing with bullies. I recommend his book, Bully in Sight.

  Wimps of the world, learn how to fight back.

  well, i put up a valiant struggle, but katie finally dragged me onto the plane on our way to las vegas for our wedding.. .

  we got to our hotel (the flamingo), and as we walked into our room we saw the message light flashing on the phone.

  " it was room service, said they had something for us, would we be in the room for the next hour?

  How would you react if......

  the wts turned out to be right and in the next couple of years the great tribulation broke out?

  would you have a change of heart and think "yeah maybe the were right all along!"?

  would you even consider joining them again?

  Everybody is right once in a while, probably even the WTS. If someone is right about something once in a while, is that a reason to surrender your individuality, your life, your family and everything else that really matters in life?

  what if?

  what if you were an alien and came to planet earth on a scientific mission to explore other planets .you have come a long way, as we know the closest star to earth is aproximately 1 light year away.

  your planet has known nothing but peace and science has been the main form of religion .what would you think when you arrived here and how would you deal with the discovery of the life forms on this planet?

  would you abandon all hope of establishing some sort of long term freindship with the so called intelligent life forms that exist here or would you try to communicate some sort of message you think might help the situation here?

  I would dress up like a man from ancient Israel. I would go to 24 Columbia Heights. I would tell them that I was a prophet returned from old and had come to claim my home at Beth Sarim. I would ask nicely if they would keep the liquor cabinets as well stocked for me as they had for Booze Rutherford. I would emanate new light in my deeply relaxed trance-like state. I would invite all of you over for a party!

  there have been a whole bunch of probing questions in new threads lately.

  people are encouraged to spill their guts out on the most sensitive of topics including jeopardizing their identities with questions about what they like on their pizzas.

  just call me old fashioned, but some of these polls look like information-gathering the wts would love to mine.

  Well, this is a heartening post, Farkel. The bigwigs in Brooklyn are taking us seriously at last -- something they never would have done with many of us when we were still dubs! I for one am glad to welcome them aboard because, after all, if any of them are "honest hearted," they will be set free by the real truth which they find here.
