  A Salute to the Kids of Dubdom

  as the unfortunate school-age children of jws worldwide, or at least in christendom, face up to two of what must certainly be the most dreaded days of the school year -- today and monday, i don't think it would be remiss to do pay them tribute -- the honor of a brief recognition of some sort, say by the raising of a glass, a prayer, a couple moments' reflection, whatever.. i refer to all those of the trembling knees, quivering lips, moistened eyes and hollow feelings in the pits of their little tummies as they loyally face up to the humiliation of standing aside from the masses of christmas celebrants among their school friends.

  how they must agonize over dealing with the incessant questions of their mates about ``what are you going to do this christmas," ``what did santa bring you?

  '' -- not to mention listening to the spirited banter of their school friends recounting how much fun they had and what they found under tree christmas morning, etc.

  Whatever yoyobrain, many of us here were also JW kids and gre up 'defending our beleifs' just like you did. You get no special merit badge from us here for that.

  Yes, it takes courage for these kids to do this. The sad thing is, they (espcially the little ones) are doing so simply because mom and dad told them to. They have no idea why they can't just the ambigous 'god hates Christmas' crap. When pressed as to why, that's the 'couragous defense' a) god hates it, and b) mom and dad said so.

  All the while, in the back of their head they are asking themselves 'what's really so wrong with this?' or more likely just being a kid and really wanting to join in with their freind in the fun times being had.

  Thanks for the memories R215, it is easy to forget about the horrors of public school for the JW kid. Especially the really young ones who haven't a clue why they can't have a present and join in the fun the other kids are having beyond "We don't beleive in that".

  how many here were married as jw's to jw's??

  if so, what was your main purpose in getting married to this person?

  i ask this because, i married my dh so that i could get to know him.

  Yep, I married young, for many of the same reasons. We have been very lucky that we have grown more and more together over the years. It is so easy to get 'unlucky' in this since people change so much from the time they're 18 or so. So many JW kids never realize what 'reality' is until they're living it - with a wife (and many times children) to support.

  I have to agree that the motivations are usually hormones, being forced into it (dating is a NO NO unless you are contemplating marriage - so often parents/etc push you towards it). Also the thoughts of marraige being an 'excuse' not to pioneer/bethel/etc might be more prevelant than we think. Most JW kids just want what they percieve to be 'a normal life'. Marriage is the easiest way.

  One hall we went to had like 8 or 9 marraiges over one summer - ALL of the teenagers/low-20s got married in a marriage free for all Almost like when one did it the rest paniked thinking all the 'good' members of the opposite sex would be 'taken' soon.

  14 Minutes and you are not a Servant of Jehovah

  last night we were discussing the "new light" that was revealed to the gb recently from jehovah.

  many of us recall all the co talks and elder parts based on the bible text of how a true servant of jah would not be "inactive or irregular" for years one was required to have at least one hour to be considered a servant of jah.. as the sec in my hall i recall so many times calling up friends to get thier time and hearing them break crying cause they didn't have 60min only about 45min- and they knew that it meant they were not servants of jah.

  now with the new light from jw a person with only 14 minutes of time will now be disqualified as being a servant of jah.. it is amazing how many jw will view this arrangement as a "loving provision from jah" instead of realizing that thier service to thier god has been reduced to whether they get 15min or 14 min.

  Dubs can see lord of rings,not harry potter

  interesting how the witnesess once again show a double set of standards with the watching of these two movies.

  harry potter is a definate no no, but watching lord of the rings is ok.. both movies have wizards.

  anyone noticed this?

  Minor stuff like movies are pretty much 'see at your own risk'. Yes, many dubs would frown upon Harry Poter and not let their kids see it (meaning the kids are the ones with no real choice since whatever their parents say goes). Same with R rated movies. Pretty much, most dubs watch some R rated movies. You just can't get caught So it's a 'don't ask don't tell' thing.

  I remember when my parents busted me for watching R rated movies - they acted like it was the end of the world, and I was evil incarnate for doing so. Satan was running my life!!!! On no!! They made me tell the elders about it - and the elder was like, "oh you realize why this is bad .... WT 87 page .... be careful w/ entertainment.... blah blah blah" all the while he's snikering because he's like "why the hell is he worried about this - I watch them all the time!"

  it seems my mom was snooping around my sisters room and happened to come across her diary.

  Wow Billygoat - you echo'd some of my thought exactly! My parents did the same things to me, picking thru my room, constantly accusing me of bad/wrong motives/etc. I too got to the point of "well if I'm so bad I'll just show them". Ditto never confiding in them - if they reacted so badly to minor infractions, how could I ever approach them with bigger things?

  Parents can drive their kids away just as much as the kids draw away themselves. Repect and trust is not forced, but earned, even (especially?) for parents. The best parent/child relationships I've known are usually NOT in religious families. Strange?

  FWIW, I would not think that there would be much excuse for reading through someone's (even a child) private papers. Some boundries have to be respected. For that matter even spouses need a measure of privacy ...

  You guys are blowing this way out of proportion. Simon has allowed a very liberal grouping of people here. All opinions/discussions are fine, but when you have people creating multiple accounts and posting meaningless drivel then that becomes an annoyance. And you will notice that people did indeed stop responding to the 'trolls' like slave, JW***, etc. But that doesn't stop them from being annoying.

  There are plenty of disenting views on this board - look at some of the evolution vrs creation stuff recently.

  DIM goes out in service

  well, i'm moving away across the country in 2 months and my mother wants to spend some time with me.

  being a pioneer, her idea of spending time with her oldest son is working out in service for a morning....i've decided to go along with her tomorrow morning because i really couldn't think of a good excuse, since i'm presently laid off from my job and collecting $$ from the state of pa. i haven't been out since about march and am not looking forward to this at all.

  hopefully i won't have to talk or say much.

  Yea slip, sounds about like what mine were. Though I got to where I just left a tract (even easier) when they were home, and old mags at not-at-homes so my mag placements would be up (gotta look good on the "I'm so spiritual" slips).

  Ever go to the door and forget the name of the person you were standing there with when you went to introduce them? Ah the good old days ... <NOT!>
