Having worked for a City for 18 years I can assure you that suing the City is by no means easy. First of all, they can limit their liability by getting appropriate laws passed through the state legislature. Generally they can only be sued for Proprietary functions such as water supply and garbage pickup. They are suit proof for the most part in governmental functions which include street maintenance in most states. In addition, a perusal of the City Ordinances would probably show that the responsibility for curb maintenance lies with the homeowner. Juries are all too aware that passing out large damage awards for this sort of claim would raise their own taxes.

Annoited: Not all their family examples so goo...
by WingCommander inwhile i have nothing against the ones that i knew of that were annoited, i found their family examples a little troubling.
i'm sure die hard jw's will respond that this is because satan is tormenting them, much as he did to job.
:( while that might be true, i also found that most ran their families like nazi's, and much of their problems were their own fault!!

You have already been given good advice. It is probably best to clear out the old thought patterns first. The Universal Unitarians are a fine group, but that may be too big a jump for someone fresh out of the borg. Organized churches really are not necessary to one's spiritual development, but can be useful for those who feel the need to belong to a group. If you are going to join a group, it is important to associate with a group which is tolerant of differing beliefs. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Methodists, Unity School of Christianity, Religious Science(not Christian Science), the Unitarians all are pretty tolerant of differing beliefs and encourage spiritual growth.

The Trinity
by meadow77 intop reasons the wts is lying about the trinity.
their translation of john 1:1 is not only a complete farce but falls apart upon closer examination of their own beliefs.
the insertion of the phrase a god, instead of god is just a clear misinterpretation.

I agree with very little of what the JWs teach but, on the subject of the Trinity, I believe that they are correct.

You are being generous when you suggest that a scribe went beyond what was in the text when he translated 1John 5:7. In truth, it was an outright fabrication. When printing was coming into fashion, there was a rush to publish. Early works were in greek. There was a prominent greek scholar by the name of Erasmus who provided some of the early translations to the printers in Switzerland. His first edition did not contain the phrase "the three are one" in 1John5:7. He was roundly critized by Catholic scholars for not including it. Being a somewhat "cocky" individual , he responded that if someone could show him a writing prior to the 6th century A.D. that included the line, he would include it in the 2nd edition. The Catholic Church manufactured such a document in a monestary in Spain that specialized in this sort of thing, ancient inks, baking to simulate age, etc.. Erasmus was being hard pressed by his publishers to meet a deadline and didn't take time to check out the document, but honored his promise to include it. Unfortunately, this was the edition used by the King James translators as the main source document for their work. It was only later that the fraudulent nature of the document was discovered. That is why most modern translations do not include the line, but translate it "and the three agree".
I don't have my source in front of me, having loaned it out, but the information, if memory serves, came from an essay contained in the Interpreters One Volume Commentary entitled "The Bible in English".
So, Swedish Chef, do you see why there are some of us that might have trouble "understanding" the simple statement, "The three are one".

You are so right! When I was in college we used to listen to this radio station (XERF) in Del Rio, Tx(transmitter was across the border in Mexico since it was so powerful as to be illegal in the U.S.). They advertised autographed pictures of Jesus Christ and genuine "simulated" diamonds. They did a great business. Who wouldn't want to have such valuable items?

Long assemblies
by freedom96 inthere have been a couple of postings lately about long assemblies.. does anyone remember these, or maybe even attended them?.
i was just a young child in the early 70's and something tells me i remember a long assembly, but don't remember if it was 8 days.. how long were they exactly, and what times.
what the hell did they talk about???.

Your post reminded me of an idea I had back in the 70s. Having been to a couple of assemblies and observing my teenage sons, I thought about organizing a JW dating club. It seemed to me that the main reason my boys were going was to observe the "meat on the hoof" not available in the local Kingdom Halls. A formal "club" with brochures and pictures and other information would have been a lot less expensive that traveling to various assemblies. But then I realized that the leadership would shoot the idea down because it would cut down on attendance at the assemblies.

Right On, qwerty! The U.K. needs to start following the bible, just like Jesus wrote it.

Jesus is God
by SwedishChef inhere is a large collection of verses which prove the deity of christ:.
isaiah 6-7 6. for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called wonderful, counseller, the mighty god, the everlasting father, the prince of peace.
7. of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of david, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever.

Undisfellowship
No the bible does Not say that Jesus created all that was made. That honor is given to the Logos or The Word. Jesus refers to himself as a Son of Man. There is a big difference is saying that Jesus was divine and saying that he was God. I would agree that Jesus was divine. But then I happen to believe that we all are.
When Jesus addressed the rich young ruler who saluted him as "good master", he replied. "Why callest thou me good? There is none good save the father."
Swedish Chef
You are correct. I don't believe all that I read in the bible or the editing that has taken place thereafter. Jesus is my master, not my God.

Magic Money, a tale of circular idiocy..........
by WingCommander inhere is an example of just how stupid the attitude of some congregations seems to be.
i'm sure we've all seen this example of stupid circular economics in action.

My kids finally woke up to the truth of your post and two went back to school and got degrees. Unfortunately, it also cost them their families. They couldn't go full time as they did have responsibilities, but they are making a lot more money. One resisted the "no education" push in the mid 1970s and went to college where her mother and I graduated. She eventually was disfellowshiped for "not putting Jehovah first". She was shunned by her mother and brothers and sisters, none of whom attended her wedding. She makes twice what the others make. The brothers and sisters found themselves working for people not nearly as bright as they were, but who had degrees. Like the Wizard of Oz said to the scarecrow: "brain, you don't need a brain! What you need is a diploma." They saw the light eventually and now five of my six kids are out and free and trying to repair the damaged relationship with their shunned sister. All of their JW friends are still doing Janitor work and stripeing cars
I would love to hear the story behind your handle.

Before the thread got hijacked by discussion of child rape I was going to say that your post reminded me of what Charles Fillmore, the founder of the Unity School of Christianity, replied when he was asked whether or not Jesus was God. He replied:
"Jesus was not God." "However, he so gave up his sense of personal self, was so in tune with his creator that it becomes difficult to tell where Jesus leaves off and God begins. "
