I did a project like this before. I went to a campus Gay/Straight Alliance meeting on campus. It was a great experience.

Studying JWs?
by bazackward inso i read this board quite often, but i don't post a lot since i'm not a jw or ex-jw.
i recently had an idea that i thought could be a lot of fun, but i wanted to get some opinions on it.. i'm going to school for my mba and in my business ethics & social responsibility class, i am required to do an "out of your comfort zone" project.
i'll paste the rules for the project below.

Capitalism or Communism

capitalism or communism.
i think none of them work.

Scary...I struggled through it, just to get a sense of where Rand's acolytes were coming from...but it was freakin' ponderous. I also don't see that egoism is a legitimate ethical schema. I just don't see the value of it long term. I'm going to try and read "The Fountainhead" and "Anthem" because I feel it's important to do so to better understand the pro-corporate neo-conservatives. They are far from my favorites, but they are in the queue on iBooks.

Actually, neither system has been tried in it's truest form. All experiments in communism have been bastardized forms -and so has western "capitalism." I'm actually kind of leaning toward democratic socialism, myself.

The Wine Thread.
by Open mind inif you enjoy a glass of vino now and then, tell us what you like and how your tastes got to where they are now.
wine snobs & non-snobs alike welcome!.
my intro to the world of wine was my jw parents buying a huge screw-top bottle of paul masson or gallo red or white, having half a glass, and sticking it out on the back porch thinking that wine stayed good like that.

I like a nice Reisling or a Gewurtztraminer . I'm a fan of the semi-sweets...not to sweet, but not too dry. I cook with wine all the time...but I just use cheap red and cheap white for that.

State your "epiphany moment " for leaving the WT
by caliber ini have found some powerful reinforcements when people have stated their " epiphany moment "... please share some.. my turning pointing began when i was badly hurt by a person i had always viewed as a literal brother.
i realized that if his.
love was conditional.... if it was the case with him , then how about those i had less affection for and trust in ?.

lifeisgood - your number 5 always bothered me. My sister had been the recipient of free medical care for a heart issue, courtesy of the Children's Miracle Network. I was dumbfounded that the society actively discouraged giving to charitable organizations, even though it was apparently okay to take advantage of these groups resources. It was one of the things I began before I really started my exit - participating in giving to charitable groups - good will donations instead of a yard sale...even giving to the Salvation Army bell ringers at christmas. On what planet is charitable giving a thing to be discouraged?

What to do when a job makes you unhappy?
by moshe ini started a new job last month- just 3 miles down the street.
i am the maintenance coordinator at a 42 room assisted living community i was pretty excited to get hired as i had been trying to get a job in that field for over two years since i retired from my primary occupation in 2008. my father lived in one of these communites for a couple years before he passed away and so do my inlaws right now.
however, after a couple weeks i am not so happy here.

Yep, actively start looking. I once had a job working for a rent-to-own franchise here in the US. I freakin' HATED that job. It paid well, but I did not like what I was doing. I was a glorified bill collector and "enforcer" sent to collect the week's vig from people who couldn't afford it. I was the guy who went to pick up the couch or TV while the little kid is crying that you're taking away "Barney" because mommy couldn't make that week's payment. Eventually, I took a$6,000 / year pay cut just so that I could NOT do that job. One of the best moves I made. It taught me that valuable lesson that there is more to consider than money when it comes to my employment.

What if You Woke Up One Morning and Realized You Were Living the Wrong Life?
by AndersonsInfo inwhat if you woke up one morning and realized you were living the wrong life?
all of us dream from time to time of overhauling our lives; of shedding the old self, with its tired habits, complacency, and disillusionment, and taking on some utterly different, more focused and fulfilled life.
bruce grierson, authored a book titled, u-turns: what if you woke up one morning and realized you were living the wrong life?

Interesting article - thanks for posting. I think all of us have the potential to become U-turners in some manner. I think it's the product of becoming introspective for whatever reason. Can you live with who you see in the mirror? I'm not a man of means, but my wife makes a great living. It broadened my choices because I realized that I can afford to choose a career that can make a difference for others rather than simply having to be mercenary about it.

Messiahs, the Apostle paul and the spread of christianity
by Aussie Oz ini have not looked into this deeply other than some pondering so please feel free to enlarge.... remembering that the jewish nation has always been messiah focused and that there were at least 5 messiah claimants in the first century alone, i was wondering what may not have transpired had not saul of tarsus made his spectacular conversion.. it would seem that the messiah claimant jesus of nazareth's immediate circle of 12 followers (apostles) were quite often perplexed at his actions and utterances and possibly also not up to the task of keeping the whole show going once the jews managed to have him executed.. into the picture came saul.
originaly an opponent of this poorly organized pesky 'sect' that was irritating the jewish leaders, he all of a sudden experiences a 'conversion' and within a reasonable time manages to not only coordinate the whole bunch into a movement, but gets to write much of what has become accepted nt bible.
in short, paul is more responsable for 'christianity' than even jesus himself.. kind of reminds me of joseph f rutherford... see a group lacking direction, claim some divine intervention and form it into a powerhouse movement.. if this opportunist saul had not come along and taken over, i wonder if the group around jesus of nazareth would have died out in a few short years just like all the other jewish messiah hopefulls have through history.. oz.

Paul is an interesting character. I agree with the Rutherford analogy. Even the misogeny goes well here. I think Paul was kind of a prick and I likely wouldn't have liked him too much - kind of a 1st century Ted Jarecz.

I miss my mom. She's been gone almost two months. She was a devout JW, but she always kept room in her life for all of her children, though all of us left the JWs - despite what some wrinkly old men in Brooklyn might have thought about it. Treasure the time with your mom - you never know how long you've got to share her company.
