If you could be President, would you?
by freedom96 inas we all have read for quite some time, many here have very strong political ideas.
some listen to both sides, others simply tell the others that they are flat wrong and are idiots.
we are not going to go there on this thread.. what i would like to know however, is how many of you would put action where their mouth is.. here is the scenario.

They're turning up the heat
by Winston Smith :>D inwell, after four elder meetings at 2 hours a pop, they sill want to get together with me.
the last meeting i told them to give me scriptural backing that disproves that the 70 years ended when babylon fell as spoken of at jer 25: 10,11. i also asked for scriptures to prove why they insist on 607 rather than 587 as the fall of jerusalem.
they said they would do that and get back to me.

W,
If it's important to your wife, do the fade. Moving to another cong. is ideal! And you don't have to physically move to attend another hall. And your reason for switching:
"Well, those brothers were not loving. You've no doubt heard that before. But we just couldn't stay."
"My work load keeps me from reaching out right now. But thanks for asking."
"Oh they say they wanted to meet w/me but it was always when it was convenient for them. And I had work or family matters."
"My wife really needs me at this time. I know you will understand."
"They treated me like I was a bad person when all I want is to provide for my family."
You'll do fine and just so you know they will never give you an written answer to any questions.
Hugs to you both, Panda

Ok, I haven't been here too long, but I enjoy the spirited discussions. I agree that non-jws have no idea (good for them) what WTS control really really means to our lives. This is a place where I've learned quite a bit of the actual workings of WTS, and it is so amazing that the r/f have no idea. I had no idea. So I'll prob'ly stick a'roun, cuz' ah shu'ks I love yah'll.

What do you think of Hummers? (and spare me the obvious jokes)
by DanTheMan in.
imho, the very embodiment of everything stupid and excessive in american culture.
to extrapolate on winston churchill's famous comment about democracy, capitalism is the worst economic system there is - except for all the others.

I really like the H-1 ... if I could afford it I'd get one for me and one for Nick.
We have an SUV and utility truck. We live way out in Texas and believe me we need these vehicles. Beside you'd never make it up our rutted road w/o an SUV or truck. Nick runs his vehicles down. Mine is from '94 and I plan to make it last.
I do admit that for something affordable I've looked at the Nissan Exterra.
Hey did anyone see the Miss America pageant? One of the finalists has rebuilt a vintage car w/ her Dad, and she wants to race stock cars professionaly. If I hadn't wanted Miss Florida to win ,I'd have bet on the Stock car gal.

Currently ours says "Hello, please leave a message after the tone." This done in the original tinny sounding male voice which came w/ the preprogrammed phone.
BUT
I want to have Nick record a message which says:
"Hey, if we wanted to talk to you, you'd have the number we answer."

What farmers are worried about falling food prices etc? US farmers get subsidies to not grow crops. This way they make money and the US can import stuff from other countries. Farm subsidies greatly distort food pricing. I don't know of another country w/ milk prices so low as ours ... yet the US Ag dept has dairies dump milk ... yeah dump milk. Even though food commoddities are available, and WIC gives away some. But still the farmers aren't giving anything away.
Farm subsidies began when 60% of America was employed on farms ... today 1% ... you do the math.
The Jehovah has always been so interested with penises I'm surprized there aren't more articles on the aesthetic aspects of ... say , circumcized vs. head-covering. Good grief, what is wrong with people who stress over someone elses sexuality. What a waste of time (and what about the trees wasted for paper for printing this drivel?)
And .. ohj forget it...

Ozzie's Weekend Poll #64
by ozziepost inhow's the weekend going?
mrs ozzie and i have been very busy with friends.
had a drive in the countryside today and stopped at an english-style pub, replete with large beer garden where we had a great meal-- more like a feast, really; you know how generous the pub meals can be!

I was a believer. Baptized at 22, immediately began aux.pio and w/in 6mos. reg.pio. I was full of energy for Jehovah. But finally realizing the where to fores of the borg, I used college as an excuse (not an acceptable excuse but no one could do anything about that) I do remember closing my eyes at meetings and dreaming of the Law and Order show I was missing .. forgot to program the VCR......

But for living Presidents, I like most of them. I must admit that Ronald Reagan when he said "Mr.Gorbachev take down this wall." That really got to me. Everyone of the advisors warned him not to say that, it would anger too many.. but Ronnie knew how he felt and w/o his support that wall would still be up and the USSR would be totally cannabilized.
And I respect the George W.Bush because he has a moral compass. He's everyman. Don't bother arguing w/me over this choice.
I liked what Clinton did for women in government. But did anyone watch M.Albright's interview w/ S.Donaldson on friday? When it got to questions about how Clinton sat at the table w/ his cabinet he told them the same thing he told America..well Albright said, yes, he lied to us, he lied to me. The look on her face told volumes. So except for the positions he gave women, I didn't care for him.
Jimmy Carter is a terrific guy.. I admire his Habitat for Humanity more than anything ... I didn't care for him speaking out about his disagreement w/ Pres.Bush over Iraq.

TeeJay: Panda wants to kiss this student who paid attention to history classes!!! ... I am so happy that someone noticed that the Civil war and the separation of our nation began when the Constitution framers didn't free the slaves. Thank you Thank you Thank you.
My favorite President was "The Man Who Wouldn't Be King" Pres. George Washington Many expected him to remain President for life. BTW did you know that in China the cherry tree story is taught as fact! When I taught 3 classes of seniors they went home and told their parents. Big discussions ensued with other faculty. Quite a thing.
Pres. Teddy Roosevelt is right up there. He was a man of reaction. And if not for him we would have no national parks.

This new book by Krakauer deals with the Dan and Ron Lafferty Mormon fundamentalist murder of their sister inlaw.
These men were raised as strict Mormons. Their father was brutal (beat the family dog to death w/ a basball bat in front of the family --- what sick f**** would just stand there and watch? But I digress)
The trial of these murderers considered some interesting legal questions. First, is it possible that these guys were insane at the time because of religious fervor? God is the one who told them to kill her because she was against their fundy teaching of plural marriage. Since she was married to their brother, who was coming around to fundy thought she vocally attacked their ideas and went to other family members to complain.. afterall, she hadn't married a fundy ... Oh they also killed her daughter.
They claimed to the court that God specifically mentioned their siterinlaw and neice as necessary "blood sacrifice."
So the murderers are in prison, one on death row.
To me this drives the point that fundamentalist authoritarian religions are dangerous, both to those w/in but especially to those outside, "[they] nurture virtue w/in the group ... directing hostility beyond it."
Now we see that the original wackos who came on the Mayflower are being touted as "the forgotten founding fathers of America" I can't believe it yet, I know it's true. These pilgrims left England because they were persecuted, only to persecute anyone who came to America and didn't agree with their religion. I digress....
"Dan and Ron Lafferty saw their quest for security and stature frustrated and then found someone to blame ... [also] applies to Mohamet Atta, Timothy McVeigh, and the Columbine Killers." (reviewer Robert Wright, NYT book review 9/21)
