ExJws Should Know Better Than To Just Accept Things And Follow The Leader
by minimus ini would think that exjws would exercise more critical thinking than not.
now we are thrust in this “ world” and take sides on social issues and politics.. just because our government leaders say something it doesn’t mean it’s right.
just because the majority of the news media tells us how we should think, it doesn’t mean we have to follow.

I was born in, and in for nearly 6 decades. My critical Thinking skills were close to Nil. But, I had ever since I was very young, a thirst for knowledge, which I still have. I always read a lot. Still do.
But most of my J.W contemporaries were downright lazy, they read little, and thought less, I think the ones who read a fair bit and thought a bit, nearly all left before me. In fact one Elder said to me " We are losing all the intelligent ones", which made me wonder, but not quite enough at that time.
I think the ones who have left in the last few years are often of the " Lazy Class" LOL, so used to having been spoon fed what they should read and think, that they have lazy reading habits, and nil Critical Thinking skills. You can see that by the comments they make on here , and the questions they ask. of course there are exceptions to this generalisation.
It does take a little effort to read enough, and then you need to Fact Check what you have read, google etc can often be false friends.
But it is such a joy to be able to spot bullshit straight away, or at least in a short time of Fact Checking, such a joy to round out your knowledge, and a joy to not be misled.
The Lazy Class are not using their freedom as they should, and are missing out on becoming what they should.

Will Covid 19 deaths exceed 'flu deaths in the U.K.?
by BoogerMan ini hope not.
thankfully, c19 appears to be waning as the summer comes in.. 2017/18 'flu deaths: england & wales = 50,100, scotland - 23,137, & n.i.
- 1500. total = 74,637.

There have been more than 290,000 confirmed cases of corona virus in the UK and just over 41,000 people have lost their lives, Government figures show.
The estimate for the real number of deaths is in excess of 60,000 due to a lag in reporting and collating, plus a good number go unreported, this figure of in excess of 60K is obviously a guess, but made by people who are respected.
I see no sign of a " Flattening of the Curve (s)" yet.The curve for total Cases, and the other for Total Deaths.
We are, sadly, creeping toward the 74,000 mark.

Beards in the WT: Africa too
by neat blue dog inas many know, african languages have for decades been given their own alternate cover with black people.
their cover for the 2020 wt#3 also includes a bearded man.
this can not be a coincidence.
-
Phizzy
Yes BB, some context would be appreciated, what does the Text on the Cover say ?
There are 446 million Muslims in Africa, so two things come to mind, either this is supposed to be a Muslim family, or the wife and little girl are shown in such garb so as to appeal to the Muslim audience, without actually saying they are Muslim.

Brutality
by Anna Marina inwt says jesus became invisibly present in 1914. what a load of old rubbish.
but they are not the only ones.. in 1927 a woman called helen keller wrote a book called my religion.
her book advocates the teachings of emanuel swedenborg who claimed that jesus had already returned.
-
Phizzy
Funny you should mention Emanuel Swedenborg, I have a complete set of his works, (Books) , up in the Loft, I must get them down and have a read. I remember glancing through them when I bought them at an Auction when I was a young J.W.
Boy, were they weird ! all about him visiting different Planets and the people and civilisations that he found there, worse than Russell !!.
I will probably flog them on E-Bay, people collect that sort of crap.
Yes, the system, if operated by certain Elders can be really brutal, but the whole Disfellowshipping and Disassociating thing is a brutal system, designed simply to control, and to keep the likes of us telling our family and friends, The Truth About The "truth".
It is also unscriptural, if you really read the Scriptures they misuse with understanding.

Thank you Petra !
I just had a quick glance, will read properly tomorrow, but did I read it right, one seemed to be saying that if a DF'd or DA'd person joined a Zoom Meeting, they should come in late and leave early as they might in a K.H. meeting ???
FFS ???? What are they like ? Controlling TWATS !!!

Fading out during the pandemic?
by Kingdavid41 ingiven the current world situation with the covid-19 pandemic and so many social distancing, staying at home and self quarantining.
all meetings are currently being held on zoom assemblies and conventions are viewed via the website .
this is the perfect time to fade-out and you probably won’t even be noticed!
-
Phizzy
Not sure about the " may not even be noticed" bit.
The latest Letter to Elders urges yet again that Elders contact all that they can regularly, even Inactive ones, so the High Control is in overdrive rather than slacking off. I found it easy (ish) to Fade in a fairly large Congregation with lazy Elders than I think it would be now, Elders have the time to check up on you.
And have been instructed to do so.

Saving Money While Stuck At Home
by Simon inso you're stuck at home, you may be worried about your income, welcome to the world of filling your stuck-in-the-house time with saving some money!.
here in canada, our energy costs are going up because we have a carbon tax.
today, in the middle of the crisis, trudeau is raising it by 50%, probably as some perverse "thank you" to all the truckers delivering vital goods.

" Fancy Coffee" has never been my thing, I buy great quality beans, grind them myself, and make a better cup for pence than what they serve for about £2.50. They can keep it ! Rip Off !
Where I am not saving money, or rather am spending more, but still saving overall, is, because of boredom, I am drinking and smoking more than before Lock Down. But somehow, I have to keep somewhat sane.
We have brewed some rather nice St. Peter's I.P.A. which works out real cheap, so it is swings and roundabouts.

Very good advice on this Thread ! Thank you Simon for starting it.
We have put much of it in to practice, and have ended up saving money, and getting better quality food etc at the same time. I thought that Lock Down would cost me money, instead we have been living cheaper, but better, and are now not so lazy !

Exactly T.D. Once that Principle, in all its parts, or some, have gone, and I believe it has in the USA. and to a slightly lesser extent here in the U.K., then it simply becomes "us and them ".
For those not familiar, here are The Nine : ( Just read, and think how many we may have lost)
The nine principles were as follows:
- To prevent crime and disorder, as an alternative to their repression by military force and severity of legal punishment.
- To recognise always that the power of the police to fulfill their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behaviour, and on their ability to secure and maintain public respect.
- To recognise always that to secure and maintain the respect and approval of the public means also the securing of the willing co-operation of the public in the task of securing observance of laws.
- To recognise always that the extent to which the co-operation of the public can be secured diminishes proportionately the necessity of the use of physical force and compulsion for achieving police objectives.
- To seek and preserve public favour, not by pandering to public opinion, but by constantly demonstrating absolutely impartial service to law, in complete independence of policy, and without regard to the justice or injustice of the substance of individual laws, by ready offering of individual service and friendship to all members of the public without regard to their wealth or social standing, by ready exercise of courtesy and friendly good humour, and by ready offering of individual sacrifice in protecting and preserving life.
- To use physical force only when the exercise of persuasion, advice and warning is found to be insufficient to obtain public co-operation to an extent necessary to secure observance of law or to restore order, and to use only the minimum degree of physical force which is necessary on any particular occasion for achieving a police objective.
- To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police, the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.
- To recognise always the need for strict adherence to police-executive functions, and to refrain from even seeming to usurp the powers of the judiciary, of avenging individuals or the State, and of authoritatively judging guilt and punishing the guilty.
- To recognise always that the test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, and not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with them.
