Lawrence Welk was way before my time, but my great-grandma (I miss her so much) used to watch it. She and I used to stay up late watching TV and this was one of the shows she watched (reruns, of course)
Even now, sometimes if it's on, I'll just leave it on because it reminds me of those times. I find its very corniness sort of.....nostalgic, soothing? It kinds of calms my nerves.....or something.
I don't know what I'm saying, but sometimes I get sick of the other crap on TV.
besides the regular stress that all brides go through, a jw couple must worry about being caught in inappropriate behavior through the engagement period, thereby nixing a kh wedding.
and then there is the stress of the invitation list.
who must be shunned, is so-and-so of an approved state to attend, etc, etc, etc.. then there is the jw funeral, or jw participants in a regular funeral.
Well the wedding means a couple is making it that much more difficult to leave a cult.And the funeral means the deceased never did!
Unfortunately, I have been to funerals where the deceased was never even a JW, but the spouse was one (either hard-core or simply inactive)---and the funeral was conducted as a JW funeral, without even consulting the deceased's "worldly" family.
I think a funeral is worse---an droning, agonizing spiel about JW beliefs (and also exhortation to have a Bible Study before it's "too late") and absolutely NOTHING about the deceased as a person.
And I'm STILL obsessed with avoiding one at all costs (if anyone remembers my thread from a long time ago)

And there was always some pompous asshole who loved to show off how he/she knew the answers to the "hard" questions.

some time back i decided it was time to get healthy, and i eliminated most junk foods from my diet.

Any onion dip, especially Kraft Green Onion Flavor, the availability of which dwindles every passing year. GREEN onion, not French onion.....there's a difference.

Cookie dough, whether from scratch, from a mix, or slice-and-bake.
Corn dogs.
A Dairy Queen vanilla cone, dipped in butterscotch.....aaahhhhhh.....
growing up i was discriminated for being german and italian not only that my ears grew before i did and was also called dumbo.
so combine that with square head, nazi and wop and being made fun of for being a jw getting in fights as a kid was very frequent.. so now you can pretty much call me anything you want and i really just don't care, got used to it and it just rolls off me.
so last week i am at a small birthday party and this guy was making some coments about germans and calling his boss "a crusty old kraut" among other things.
I have often wanted to say something about posts/topics I have seen here, but refrained because it just isn't worth it. Those who do seem to get pounced on with the "you people see race in/get offended by EVERYTHING" type retorts.
Judging from some statements and topics I have seen here (and I'm NOT talking about the most recent topics) it would appear that not many "ones of color" frequent this board.

old story just came to mind as i was browsing through the watchtower's website (because i can't sleep and i truly find it entertaining) and read an article about abhoring that which is wicked.
i was never a jw - my husband was until he was 20, and is now inactive.
he told me a story that just infuriates me to no end, and i have to wonder if it is common.
There was an article written in Essence magazine some years ago, by a woman who either was abused or grew up in a severely abusive family. She was a former Witness and the elders were involved many times but did nothing.
Being a dub at the time, I was quite shocked to see the article; she told it all, no holds barred. But I wasn't surprised, because my best friend's father abused and dominated their family.
Does anyone remember that article?
this is just my opinion, but i watched his performance last night, and cringed while he sang off key this was the first time i'd heard him perform, and about all he could do in key was scream.
guess that just isn't my thing.
i'll take the original recording artist any time.
I'd just be happy if he'd get a body perm, or a body wave--or whatever the hell you call it. Heck, a curling iron would do if it'd give it more body.

the end of october i'm going on a 9 day cruise to the caribbean with a group of 70 people.
one of the the travelers is a jw and it will be interesting to see how "worldly" she will behave away from her jw clan.
at our christmas party (that's right she was at our christmas party) she got drunk and she buys christmas presents for her grandchildren who are not jw.
I remember a Dub (baptized, still in good standing) girl from a neighboring congregation who was seeing a married police officer in our VERY small town.
She and her little Dub friends always shunned my sis and I because we weren't in the "in" group; even more so once we dropped out of the troof.
Oh, the look on her face the last time my sis and I saw her coming out of our local grocery store, hand-in-hand with her lover.....we just happened to be visiting our hometown the same weekend and just happened to be together when we saw her. I thought she'd have a heart attack right there at the storefront.
I always find it interesting when I see JWs that don't know I was once one. Most of them play the boy scout right to the end. But some are a different person when they think they are safe from JW or ex-JW eyes.
Very interesting indeed--I totally agree. The last time I worked with a JW, that JW was right on the Dub straight 'n narrow. She didn't know that I used to be one. Made it a point to inform us new folks that she didn't work on certain nights because she was a Dub. She was die-hard and true; would never say "and you do the same" when a customer wished her a Merry Christmas. It was always a stammered, fake "a-and you have a-a nice day!"
within a few weeks i leased a condo on the banks of the willamette river just out side the city of portland.
as she got into her car she looked at me funny again, laughed and just shook her head.. .
i told him that if i said i was sorry, i knew that is what they wanted to hear but it was not the truth.
Unfortunately, only those of us on this board can understand how really crazy it all is.

jw's can be rotten, but what about the "brutally honest" jw strangers at assemblies?
i have had some issues with the general meaness jw's are to people that they do not even know, and are jw's.. example 1: i was maybe 13 years old and i was a fast developer, i had big boobs basically.
well a dress i had was really nice...my parents would not have let me wear something that was not apprepriate for me, but i guess the dress was low (i didn't think so) and when i was in the bathroom at the assembly at the mirror, a woman just came up to me and was like "you are showing all the assets you have to offer" or something to that effect.
My youngest sister (22, still a Dub) regales me with the incredibly stupid comments/unsolicited advice from the congregants at her Hall.....
...it's quite unbelievable, the things that these people feel they have the right to say to her and her husband. These selfsame people would not have DARED say such stupid things to me or my other sis, back when we were Dubs.
Personally I think they can sense the general depressed and down-trodden air she has about her, and act accordingly. It's sad; she acts like that's how things are supposed to be. She doesn't seem to have ANY sense of outrage or to realize that that was a pretty fucked-up thing to say to a "fellow Christian sister".
If a brother/sister had said to US half the things that they say to my youngest sis, they would've been subjected to a severe cursing-out, or a serious ass-whuuping.
