i really do appreciate all the advice that i received from you all on this matter.. i even appreciate the ones who gave critical advice and downed smoking.. i took all advice that was given and have resolved the problem with your help.. here is where i am at with the issue now; i have been with my wife for almost twenty years now and we have always had a very strong and good relationship especially when it comes to communication.

well to her i betrayed that special bond by not telling her i was smoking.

so in her mind she figured if i would hide this from her what else could or would i hide from her.. so after digesting all the good advice that i have received from you all, i had a long heart to heart talk with her and reasured her that even though i am no longer a witness that i would never do anything to destroy the family that i love.

BigJim, I agree with EUK as to you being a better parent...now you will be able to decide issues on their own merits instead of based on what an organization tells you to do...this will help your kids to develop critical thinking skills as well.

EUK (((Hugs))) to ya!!! Your sharing of your daughter's birthday party brought tears to my eyes...I celebrated my daughter's first birthday about 3 years ago (she was 5) and OMG, it was so much fun!!! I felt so good about the whole thing and I was surrounded by my true friends. Of course, they had to lead me by the hand as to what to do LOLOL..having been raised a JDub, I wasn't sure of 'proper birthday party procedure!' But it was a great time and I am so happy to enjoy my childrens' birthdays with absolutely NO guilt!! Ain't freedom a wonderful thing????

Which meeting was the hardest to attend for you ?

for me i think it was the sunday meeting.. just wanting to stay home and sleep in.. but i think the watchtower study was the hardest to sit threw... you had to have it studied before hand.. and highlighted.. then sit there and listen to it all over again..

I hated 'em all!!

My husband wasn't a witness and I had two babies, a year and a half apart...god, it was such a pain in the ass to haul both kids, the diaper bag, and all my books into the meetings...and what was the point anyway??? Like I got anything out of them LOL

I do remember a funny story about the bookstudy...we were studying the creation book and I was sitting next to an elder that I had known my whole life (Ken Titus...guy with a great sense of humor)

Anyway, the brother was reading and I saw the pitfall before he got to it...I had that weird feeling of knowing what was coming before it actually happened. I saw the word 'organism' and yep, sure enough when ole Randy got to it, he said 'orgasm'....there was this deep, excruciating silence until all of a sudden, Ken burst out laughing. He laughed so hard, he cried and of course the rest of us couldn't stop either. Poor Randy...he was bald and the red spread up his face and covered his entire head! Oh god, it was so funny....

Okay, so I guess there were times when the meetings were fun

Speaking of bathrooms at the DC

reading mulan's thread about her daughter-in-law's experience in the bathroom, i couldn't help remembering what happened at one district convention in jacksonville.. a sister brought her little 2 year old son in to spank.

she whipped him for so long with a thick comb and everytime the little boy would cry she would spank him some more because he was crying.

i went back to my seat crying.

I have two children, ages 8 and 9 and I do not spank them. I did when they were really small because I was following WTS methods as well as what I been raised with. I remember when my son was about 6 months old and was being fussy at the meeting...I took him into the mother's room and was comforting him (he was bored and just wanted to make noises) anyway, an elder's wife came in and very kindly explained to me that it was never too early to start training my son to be quiet at the meetings. She related to me how she began spanking her daughter at 4 mos old. I was totally in shock...there was NO WAY I would hit my precious baby...not at that age, he wouldn't have a clue!!!
Anyway, I stopped all forms of physical discipline about 5 years ago...my children are not perfect but I am constantly complimented on how well behaved they are. Teachers, other parents, etc...I will admit that they behave much better for other people than they do for me!!! LOLOL But all in all, they are good kids and so far, the alternative methods seem to be working well for us.

Why did you get baptized?

was it for love of the kingdom hall and jehovah?

pressure .. felt like you had to?

for me it was because all my friends my age had gotten baptized.. and it was left up to me to do it too.. to fit in i guess.

I totally agree...there were so many things we 'young people' weren't mature enough to handle responsibly but when it came to making a life altering decision, that was no prob!!! Sheesh, the hypocrisy makes me ill.

I was 13 when I got baptized...interestingly enough, this came less than a year after the nightly rapes stopped...so what say you all?? That I was 'mature' enough to make such a decision?? Funny how when I broached this very subject with certain elders, I couldn't get any kind of direct answer from them...they treated me like I was trying to shirk responsibility or something...hmmmmm, now why does that sound familiar???

I forgot to mention that my entire extended family was JW...there was a great deal of pressure to get baptized...in fact, two of the elders who went over the questions with me were my uncles. And hey, I couldn't let the family down now could I?

America Bashing

with all of the america bashing going on of late, i thought i'd mention the fact that america stands for freedom, as flawed as our system may be.

you're even free to be critical of the government and it's leaders.

the many men and women who have died defending this country did so to preserve the rights even of people who hate the u.s. there are many different cultures here, so there are many different attempts at creating laws for the land.

America Bashing

I saw that over in the jokes thread that Simon posted and thought it was funny. Glad to see it over here as I think this thread could use the infusion of humor. However, obviously it's impossible to please all of the people all of the time; where I might find something funny, someone else may find it offensive...c'est la vie. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think that you posted it in anything besides a spirit of humor.

I was talking with a friend of mine who has been a therapist for 23 years...she made the comment that when we are totally accepting of ourselves, we rarely have need of feeling defensive or concerned about what others think or say about us (barring our loved ones, of course) and I think that is true here...perhaps something we can all examine a bit. Just a suggestion.
