The extreme fascination of chess can result in its consuming large amounts of one's time and attention to the exclusion of more important matters, apparently a reason Huss regretted having played the game. Also in playing it there is the danger of "stirring up competition with one another," even developing hostility toward another, something the Bible warns Christians to avoid doing.
Then, too, grown - ups may not consider it proper for children to play with war toys, or at games of a military nature. Is it consistent, then , that they play a games noted to be , in the opinion of some, an "intellectualized equivalent" of the maneuvers enacted by little boys with toy soldiers"? What effect does playing chess really have upon one? Is it a wholesome effect?

This is a great thread and good topic.
1. I live in California (USA) and am 43 years old.
2. I have three kids, two daughters and a son and a fantastic wife. Two of the three kids, (daughters) were on the honor role last year. My son is in 6th grade. I have two brothers and a sister. MY oldest brother is still an elder in the WT.
3. Favorite color is blue.
4. Favorite sports are boxing and football. I used to box for several years with Senior amateurs turning pro in Sacramento CA. I had my nose broken three times and reset it myself in the gym bathroom. EEEEEEOOOOWWWW. I was reprimanded by the elders of the congregation I was in several times for boxing. Remember Pay attention 1981 page 150, no self defense classes? My brothers and I were also reprimanded for playing chess, we loved it. According to the WT at that time it was a war game,(AWAKE! 3/22//73 pp 12-14)
4. I used to run a mill for a seed processing company and helped build four different plants, one in Washington and three in California. I started my own landscaping and maintenance business in 1984 and turned over much of the business to friend of mine who did a fantastic job with it, he is an atheist, I am not. I still own the Warehouse, residential and commercial cleaning end of the business.
5. I left the WT in 1989. Because of the lies spread around about why I left, I sent out 35 letters to churches in my area along with a flyer from Bethel Ministries at that time (Freeminds now) exposing the WT. I was contacted by a church to speak about the WT and ever since have spoken at several churches and private gatherings to thousands of people about the WT and Mormonism. I have sent out several thousand pieces of info exposing the WT. I have had several hundred ads in the local papers about the WT as well as continued TV ads on our local cable stations that have ran since 1996.
6. I like family gatherings as well as barbaques with friends.
7. I read a lot, but do not have a favorite book.
8. About the only TV I watch is the History channel and Animal Planet and the weakest link, and boxing. I am just too busy to watch much TV. Football season is around the corner so I will be watching that.
9. I believe in God but do not believe the Bible to be inerrant.
10. I set goals for myself every year and usually accomplish them. Most of these are family and financial goals. -

To all snipers and bombers
by Norm inthe approach of ex-jehovah's witnesses towards those still witnesses has been debated since the problem first occurred.
personally i joined the ranks of ex-witnesses in 1988 and found myself more or less thrown into the fray appearing in media like newspapers, radio and tv.
one of the first things i noticed was the interest bestowed upon me from competing churches, particularly from the pentecostalism camp.

The A-(postate) Team
by ChuckD inimagine this;.
you have been on the fence for a while, but it is becoming more and more apparent to you that your leaving is just a matter of time, and that soon, very soon, it will all come to a head.
you wait for that phone call from the elders like winston smith awaited the bullet in the back of his head.

HELP!!- JT asked to become a MASON!
by JT ini have been searching the net for some excellent sites on the masons.
this past weekend we went down to nc for a wedding and my wife and i broke the news to our nonjw family that we were no longer involved with jw.
i could not believe the open arm welcome my uncle and aunt were almost in tears- they told us we have seen you come home each yr from the main office in ny and then you got married and you would come home and we wanted to say something about the jw but you seemed to be so well respected by the local jw - whenever we would tell folks that our newphew was up in ny- the jw would get all excited- they told us they thought it was so sad for i only made $90 a month.

JT,
I have two attorney friends and a seed consultant friend that are always trying to get me to come to their Mason meetings. I have a few books on the Masons as well books from the Mormon church and Joseph Smiths dealings with the Masons. I have never attended a meeting and really have no desire to do so. It seems from what I have read and understand by those who attend, it is just another exclusive club where nonsense takes place.

Identifying Your Religion as True or False
by Scorpion in*true religion inspires in its worshipers an unbreakable bond of love and unity that is not affected by national boundaries.

*True religion inspires in its worshipers an unbreakable bond of love and unity that is not affected by national boundaries.(John 13:35) False religion does not inspire such love. Rather, in imitation of Cain, its members go out and kill one another in international wars.
-1John 3:10-12.*True religion keeps free of human politics and looks to the Creator to solve world problems by means of his Kingdom government. False religion follows Nimrod's examples at the Tower of Babel. It merges itself with politics, trusts in political gods in whose affairs it meddles, and thus lays the basis for its own destruction.-Daniel 2:44; John 18:36; James 1:27
*True religion recognizes Jehovah as the true God, the only one able to deliver from oppression. False religion, such as practiced in ancient Egypt adn Greece, offers a multitude of helpless mythical gods who are all without merit. -Isaiah 42:5; 1 Corinthains 8:5, 6.
*True religion promises eternal life on earth in happiness. False religion-for example, Buddhism-views life on earth as undesirable and as something from which to be liberated in an uncertain hereafter.-Pslam 37:29; Revelation 21:3,4
*True religion, by means of its holy book, the Bible, umbues people with unshakable faith; it gives them a guaranteed hope and motivates them to acts of genuine love toward God and neighbor.(2 Timothy 3:16, 17)False religion, despite its holy books, is for the most part ineffectual in doing these things.-1 John 5:3, 4.
*True religion is marked by humble overseers. False religion is noted for its ambitious,independent-minded leaders, who are willing to twist the truth and who seek political or wordly gain.-Acts20:28, 29; 1 Peter 5:2, 3.
*True religion, the way of proper submission to God, wields a spirtual, not a literal, sword. False religion, on the other hand, compromises true doctrine, breaks Christian nuetrality, and pursues human concerns more than divine interests.-2 Corinthians 10:3-5.
*True religion wins the hearts of unbeliever over to the worship of the true God. False religion contributes to a climate of skepticism, freethinking, rationalism, and secularism.-Luke 1:17; 1 Corinthians 14:24, 25.
*True religion, as practiced by Jehovah's Witnesses, is spirtually flourishing as never before. False religion, its skirts splattered with blood, is suffering from spiritual malnutrition and waning support.-Isaiah 65:13, 14.
What is religion's future in view of its past? False religion has no future. Desert her! (Revelation 18:4, 5) Turn to true religion. It will last forever.Afake! December 22, 1989 page 18

Parasites
by philo ini have just listened to a radio programme on the bbc about parasites, which it made my flesh crawl.. imagine a parasite that invades an ant, but which does more than feed from its bodily nutrients, it interferes the ants nervous system.
it does this to cripple the ant.
it must infect a bigger animal, a grazing herbivore, and for this, it must disable its host above ground during the warmth of the day.

Teejay,
I have a few friends that know the WT is bogus but still attend the meetings or have contact with certain family members and a few friends that are still JW. In the process good things are happening as far as the active JW family members questioning the bogus non-sense of the WT. Your contact with these ones inside can be valuble in getting them to think beyond the illogical non-sense of the WT.
Keep talking to them as long as they will listen.
I got a kick out of Kent's post. He's a regular Sherlock Holmes, ain't he?
