  Need Help - Parent in ICU

  df parent is in hospital icu and surgeon wants to give blood.

  parent is df for almost 20 and firmly refused blood for personal reasons (spiritual).. .

  my concern is that parent is taking strong stand based on outdated jw gb hlc guidelines.

  Trying to handle my JW mom

  my mom is a recent widow.

  she, being a jw does not have means to support herself and does not seek higher education ( because that would take from her studies ).

  so, she is living ( sponging off of ) me.

  Send her to her Congregation™. Tell them you refuse to have her terrorizing your kids with their bullshit, and that until she knocks it off, they can keep her and support her in the manner to which she has become accustomed.

  Or maybe you could call Social Services and have her removed from the home for psychologically abusing your children with her batshit crazy religion.

  I think the analogy goes something like this:

  Husband and wife are walking together when approached by an armed robber. The gunman demands all their valuables and says to the husband that he will shoot the wife if they don't comply. All they have is a small amount of cash and their wedding rings. They turn over their cash, but the husband hesitates when it comes to their rings - they are a symbol of their marriage, something they value dearly.

  The story doesn't continue, except to ask the rhetorical question: With his wife's life on the line, why would he hesitate and place more value on a mere symbol of their marriage rather than on his wife, the other party in the marriage? The symbol in the form of wedding rings can be replaced, but the life of the person to whom he is married cannot be replaced.

  so yesterday afternoon, an elder who lives only 3 blocks away drives up to my house as i was about to enter my car.

  as he gets out of his car, i noticed he had a stack of photocopied paper in his hand and he seemed quite nervous.

  i was genuinely happy to see him nonetheless since he is pretty easygoing and very likeable.

  1984 was required reading for high school. I noticed the similarities right away and had no resources to find a way out, though at the age of 15 I desperately wanted to quit. A couple of years worth of pressure from my parents and the Congregation™ sucked me back in until I was in my 30s. Being independent of my family of origin freed me to have opportunities to explore my thought processes more, without potentially being found out.

  one can wear a beard and still be a priest in the rcc.. one can wear a beard in the wts, but never be an elder with one.

  i am feeling a bit out of sorts & i need to bounce this off the board.. do some of you remember the coming out of the un scandal back when?.

  have you seen the letter from the un in c of c?.

  i am sitting here with that original letter in my hand.. the day before the date on this letter, i had heard about the watchtower involvement on hourglass2.

  Hi apocalypse,

  I remember hawkaw... even had lunch with him once, and lots more phone conversations with him. I don't remember what it was that possessed him to help out a bunch of exJWs, because he had no affiliation with JWs at all, but he was instrumental in the publicity of the JW child sexual abuse scandal that resulted in the 2003 episode of CBC's The Fifth Estate on the topic.

  The UN letter isn't in my personal copy of Crisis of Conscience - we left the JWs in the mid 1990s and so had the earlier edition. The UN scandal broke in the fall of 2001. Even though I've had a couple of computers since then, my PDF of that letter from Paul Hoeffel is something I will never delete. I have it on a back up disk too. Even though we'd been out of the JWs several years by that point, it helped me personally to validate that I didn't make a big mistake in leaving the JWs. Sometimes it's tough to be the black sheep of one's family and be ostracised for having a contrary opinion to the way I was raised. I remind myself that my parents also turned their backs on the religions of their own parents when they became JWs, except my grandparents had the wherewithall to recognize that ostracising their children for changing their belief system was unloving... mine don't see it that way where I'm concerned.

  Don't sell yourself short - you provided a very valuable service at a time when the information was relevant, and now it's archived here and in CoC for others' benefit. As it turns out, the WTS affiliation with the UN was just the tip of the iceberg of WTS hypocrisy. Since then we've learned all kinds of dirty little secrets that the WTS keeps hidden to maintain the appearance of being "above reproach".
