so i have a friend in a congregation in new jersey who recently called me to tell me that he got a divorce.

nothing surprising there at first but it is the fact of when it happened.

his wife began pioneering april 1, and after about three weeks she came to him and told him that about 4 years she had engaged in loose conduct (fondling the penis and the guy kissing her breasts) during a time that she was inactive.

Your friend needs to hear that what happened before he knew his wife is ANCIENT HISTORY. I bet there are boobs that he fondled and girls he French kissed before he met his wife too, that he didn't disclose to her.

When you get married, you promise to be faithful to your partner 'from this day forward' - it has no basis for dredging up the past and digging through a person's private life. Starting a marriage is about looking forward, not fixating on the past.

It just goes to show you what kind of vindictive, sadistic perverts have been Appointed By Holy Spirit™ to meddle in a couple's relationship like this. HOW DARE THEY tell him that he ought to be offended or that he should seek a Scriptural Divorce™ based on this trifling bit of ANCIENT HISTORY. It's not like she was gang-banging or prostituting herself to help make ends meet while Pioneering™.

How was manipulating him like this an act of LOVE? How is destroying this couple's marriage like this supportive, loving or even kind?

So, does that mean *any* JW could seek a Scriptural Divorce™ if that kind of information was not disclosed prior to a JW couple's marriage?

Frig, that means I would be eligible to have a Scriptural Divorce™ because Mr Scully didn't disclose to me his pre-JW dalliances before we married. We even had to go through an interview with the JW Elder™ who would be officiating at our wedding, and one of the questions we were each asked was whether there were any indiscretions that needed to be disclosed in order for him to have a Clear Conscience™ about doing our ceremony.

This is some messed up $h!t.

I bet you dollars to donuts if it was the husband with a "history", they'd expect the wife to forgive and forget, and act like their wedding day started with a clean slate.

Depression & natural ways to deal with it

i was on prozac for about 10 years, and finally went off all meds about 18 months ago.

the prozac was causing me to have manic episodes, so they added a bipolar medicine as well as a sleep aid, and the bipolar medicine made me dizzy & nauseaus.

so now i work really hard at exercising regularly, i take a lot of natural supplements including natural lithium & megadoses of omega upon advice of a homeopathic doctor.

I would have suggested a second opinion from another physician when Prozac was causing you to have manic episodes that they treated with medication for bipolar disorder.

My main concern is that Lithium has a very narrow therapeutic range and you should be having your levels tested regularly to prevent toxicity. As I said, the boundary between therapeutic levels and toxic levels is quite narrow, and you could be putting yourself in harm's way by going the "natural" route without proper monitoring.

People can be on antidepressants long-term, just like they can be on medication for Type 2 Diabetes long term. Depression is an imbalance in brain chemistry, which can be endemic (part of your usual brain chemistry) or related to other external factors, like stress, lack of coping skills, poor self esteem etc. It can be long term or temporary. Antidepressants have come a long way since Prozac - maybe you need to try a different medication than Prozac. Newer ones like Pristiq combine the SSRI (Serotonin Specific Reuptake Inhibitor) of Prozac with an NRI (Norepinepherine Reuptake Inhibitor) with good effect.

It's important to make physical activity and healthy lifestyle a part of your daily routine. Start with walking, increasing the duration and intensity of your sessions. Make better food choices, which along with exercise will contribute to your overall sense of accomplishment in self care.

Find something you think you might enjoy and join a group who enjoys the same activity. There are lots of choices - check for groups in your area.

Finally, be kind to yourself. Being part of a high control religious group like the JWs does a number on your self esteem, and if you are being shunned by people who you were once close to, that makes it all the worse.

Funeral this Saturday, looking for suggestions

my husband will be going (unless he has to work) to his jw aunt's funeral this coming saturday (6-29-13).

he will be riding up with one of his other aunts (not a witness).

i refuse to go because i just hate those people that much, that if it were my mom's funeral i still would not go.

JW funerals are the most dreadful thing to endure, even worse than the loss that you've experienced.

Your loved one might get a few minutes' worth of mention in the preamble to describe her years of service to the congregation and her devotion to her family. The remainder of the talk will be a bona fide Infomercial targetting any non-JWs in attendance and inviting them to approach any JWs afterward if they are interested in learning more.

The Funeral talk outline specifically states that "the talk need not exceed 30 minutes in length".

It'll be more or less a wham bam thank you ma'am event; it is exceedingly rare for personal remembrances to be shared.

I'm glad you're attending with non-JW relatives. They can help to buffer the shunning that might otherwise happen. If there is a family gathering afterward, expect to be excluded from it. In fact, you would probably be better off going out to dinner with your non-JW relatives so you can share memories of your aunt, because there won't be any of that going on with the JWs - they consider it to be an unseemly display of grieving.

Having said all that, I'm hoping that your JW relatives will be the exception, rather than the rule.

Help me plan a birthday party for a 'sort of' JW

a relative and friend of mine is turning the monumental "60" in 3 weeks.

he has "studied" with the jws since childhood, but never became a baptised member.

You know what... if he was committed to the JWs, he wouldn't have Studied™ with them throughout his entire adult life without getting Baptized™. Something isn't computing for him. Perhaps he isn't the model citizen that JWs claim to be and he therefore feels unworthy of going that extra step.

But believe me, people who don't want their milestone birthday recognized don't go around announcing that their birthday is coming up soon.

I like the idea of cupcakes. Then you're not making a "birthday cake" which might freak him out a bit. But you are making several dozen birthday cupcakes... the more the merrier!! ;)

For birthday songs, you could go with the Beatles "Birthday" song or "Forever Young" by Rod Stewart, instead of the traditional Happy Birthday song, or choose from this playlist.

If you're going to do a surprise, have someone take him fishing to occupy him for a few hours while you set up the party, and bring him back for a BBQ/birthday party. That way he gets to go fishing and then enjoy a meal and everyone's company afterward.

No court anywhere would make a blood donor legally responsible for the death of the recipient of a blood transfusion, let alone murder.

An exception might be in the case of HIV or Hepatitis, where an infected individual knowingly donates their tainted blood, hoping to create a maelstrom of chaos in the blood donor system. It is a criminal offense in Canada to knowingly attempt to infect a sexual partner with HIV or hepatitis, especially if you do not inform them of your positive STI status.

When you are hospitalized and in need of a blood transfusion, you are now required to sign a specific consent form stating that you understand the risks and benefits that have been explained to you by the physician. You assume liability for your choice to accept or refuse a blood transfusion. This does not absolve the hospital, its physicians or nurses from negligence or malpractice.

In the case of an emergency, Universal Donor blood (Type O Negative) is always given, as it is the safest to use when time is of the essence. A person who is unconscious and has no medical directive to the contrary (no blood card, DNR, etc.) is assumed to want their life saved by whatever means possible. That is a basic tenet of laws relating to medical care.

Donor blood goes through so much screening and preparation before it is administered to a patient - it is safer than it has ever been since transfusions have been used in medical practice. People who are HIV positive or who have a host of other medical conditions are denied the privilege of donating blood.

The statement in the WT from the 50s is clearly trying to scare people away from being blood donors, by making them feel that they would be "bloodguilty" for any negative outcome from the use of their blood.
