  I was raised a JW so I was never converted myself but I think the mind games start quite early on:
  "Your friends and relatives may try to stop you studying...this is Satan trying to stop you coming to know God"
  Of course, becuase they DO try to stop you, it reinforces what you've been told. A lot of cults use this trick and turn 'persecution' or 'objection' into a confirmation that they are the 'true religion'.

  some christian writers claim that there are about 300 fulfillments of old testament prophecy in the new testament.

  having examined these supposed fulfillments, i find that most of them are too vague to be convincing.

  i wonder how many witnesses will, on march 16th.

  (a) wearing a red nose to the meeting / ministry work.. (b) fastening a red nose to the grill of the family car.. (c) telling jokes for charity.. (d) rushing to the phone with their credit card details as the bbc raise millions for africa.. (e) doing anything consructively beneficial for africa at all.. (f) tut-tut at how dreadful this wicked old world has become.. please support comic relief!

  I remember a Sunday talk after a recent red-nose day where the brother described how useless it was..."what will £20m or £30m do? Nothing..."
  I *really* wanted to stand up and say "Excuse me, but your family isn't dying of starvation is it? So it's easy for you to say isn't it you fat bastard !"

  I think you can be pressured to get baptised even without anyone saying anything directly to you. The literature and assemblies and whole 'go door to door' thing is all about this aim so it's impossible for it not to get into your head as 'the thing you should be doing'.
  I know that is what happened to me. Of course, being under 18 you are not legally able to decide to join an organisation so I think that there is a valid claim that such baptisms are null and void (and hence, no DF'ing possible). Just a thought!

  I think the best control is what was done in France - Tax them !
  If you make it 'not worth their while' to expand there then they wont (appart from a few hard-liners who actually believe the stuff).
  It's not about faith or belief but a large organisation after more property and money.
  I agree that an outright ban would be dangerous as it re-inforces the belief that everyone is against them.

  how do members let the higher -ups use a scripture from the ot where moses was speaking to isreal, and completely disregard jesus' words?

  hey JT...I've felt like your friend - I'm sure everyone has at some point. The JW teachings makes things worse because you come to accept that the 'world is becoming a worse and worse place'...'Signs of the times' and all that.
  However, if we do some research we find that there is less crime now than 100 or 1000 years ago even though we may have short term blips. People are living longer now than ever before with average life spans of 76 years which is ever increasing. How could this be with all the famines and wars?? BECAUSE THEY HAVE GOT LESS.
  We need to study history from independant sources and although there are problems in the world and dangers, they are getting less and less so all the time - they just get reported better now.

  Grounds for Disfellowshipping?

  hey all,.

  i'm sure this topic has probably been covered before, but as i'm in this situation now i'm hoping maybe you can offer your thoughts.. i'm just curious, what are actually grounds for disfellowshipping?.

  i'm to the point where i no longer believe that jehovah's witnesses have the truth, but if at all possible i want to avoid the big *d* word, as most of my family and my husbands family are still jehovahs witnesses.

  Hi eyes...sorry to hear you're going through this.
  We've been through a similar thing ourselves. I would recommend never talking to elders or their wives or telling anyone the doubts you have unless you trust them 110% and even then, some people will surprise you.
  The have 'scriptural grounds' but also 101 of their own justifications which basically amounts to 'disagreeing with them'.
  BTW: The elders wives probably call round because they like to think they are really important and can do what they like..."my husband is an elder".
  It really is one of the marks of a cult that you are not free to leave without sanction. They can't afford for people to be able to leave easily - everyone might do it !
  I wonder somtimes that you could have congregations full of people who would like to leave but none dare step out of line.

  Focus: Sorry - just noticed the bit about the anonimizer service...
  The reason I've blocked them is that in the past we've had trouble-makers who I removed because of the abusive posts they made. I blocked the anonymous proxy that they were using as a precaution.
  It's for no other purpose.
  Hope it's not causing too much inconvenience.
