Is there no hope for truly understanding the universe?
If a person believes that we were created by a supreme being who is in control of and fully understands the universe, he may reason that we were created with the ability to also understand the universe.
But if we are not created and have just evolved as part of a natural prosses why should we asume that our brain should have any grasp on a true understanding of things.
How can we know that our brains just are not in tune or cannot grasp any of the fundementaly important concepts that case this universe to exist?
Maybe in trying to understand the universe we are just tying ourselves up in knot trying to know the unknowable?

Flooded Kingdoms of the Ice Age - re: The Flood
by Celtic invery interesting documentary on channel4 this evening, all about the sunken kingdoms, civilisations off india's east and west coasts.
both of these sunken cities are only now being seriously underwater archaelogically surveyed.
the one on the east coast is of massive dimensions, incedibly technologically advanced civilisation pre dating anything else thus far seen.

Graham Hancock is back on telly then.
He has been writen off as a crank by many historians and archeologists ,but seems this time to have toned down his ideas a bit.
I actually think there could be something to his latest idea.
If there were civalisaions before the end of the ice age then I would expect them to live on the coast as it is a good place for a town to be situated.
Of course when the ice melted they would have been flooded. It would have seemed like the end of the world to them.
But was there really a man like Noah where all these flood stories originate?
How can the Indian story be conected to the biblical and sumerian story?Maybe they are one and the same story and not seperate legends as wideley believed .
If there were civalisations before the ice age how advanced were they if they managed to create major cities then what else were they capable of? -

Will Cloning Disprove the Resurrection?
by metatron inok, we take a skin cell from you.. we use its nucleus to create a clone - of you.. we train it in all your memories and abilities.
we use "false memory" techniques to convince the clone.
that its memories are real.. is it you?
-

Metatron,
There is a problem with this statment"we use its nucleus to create a clone - of you."
We first need to define what the "you" is.
Can scientist make a copy of "You" or just a simiar or identical body structure and are they the same thing or not?"There's no "you" appart from your neural conections. If someone could manage to reassemble each and all of your neural conections 100 years after you pass away, that person would feel the same sense of continued existence that you feel each morning when you wake up
I think the problem arises when the concept of "you" is contemplated in a prospective way; in my opinion, it only makes sense in a retrospective way."Joseph Joachim this statment is based on too many asumptions"There's no "you" appart from your neural conections"
If anyone here thinks he can explain conciousness then please tell me first how I see.

Parallel universes?
by sleepy ininteresting hozison programme on bbc2 last week about how new evidence is coming out that there may be parallel universes that are "needed " to explain our own.. once prominent physicist belives our universe "borrows" gravity from another universe.. but what really is happeing in physics , can it really tell us the truth about our universe?.
it seems that a lot of physics is philosophy.you think of an idea that could explain phenonoma and then see if you can make it work with mathamatics.. but as more and more complex theories are coming forward and are used to explain how the universe works it seems that any grasp on the truth of the matter is getting further and further away.when you start invocking parallel universes to explain things where do you stop?.
it seems that at least for now the universe is unexplainable.even without parellel universes you still cannot explain the origin of the universe , were it came from or why it is here.which ever way you go you get to a point in which you can never test or measure to see if you are right.. if there are parallel universes then do these need other universes to explain them?.

I seem to be coming more to the belief that ultimatly things are explainable. At least by our brains.
In fact why should our brain have the capability to understand things it has no way of measuring?Another thing, althought it may be true that there are other types of universe that still doesn't mean all things are possible just spread out over different universes like was claimed in the programme.
There is a difference between all things concievable and all things possible and we don't know what all things possible are so we carnt say that any thing can happen , just as long as it is somewere else. But putting that aside what I found very interesting was the thought that the particles we are made of exist between our universe and others.
So if there are universes slightly different or even very different and these universes can sometimes mix ,how do we know that part of ourselves doesn't exist in other different universes?
Maybe when we die we live then in another universe, or when people see visions or ghost this is an experiense of other universes , or God , angels or aliens.
There we are back to what people have believed for thousands of years , when they needed alternate universes to explain things.
Could human intuistion have been right all along? -

I remmeber feeling relieved and happy first , then dispondant.
I now go through waves of feeling happy and released and at other times I feel sad at the mistaken dreams and time wasted and sorry for friends and family still there.I'm not used to feeling up and down like this.
Does this fit what you feel? -

This could go on for ever.
It is not it seems cranks that are using these theories but the most respected of scientists.
It reminds me of a disscusion I once had on the ministry where a guy explianed to me his belief that what ever you belived was true.
I said if this were true I could never know it as I didn't believe it was true and therefore in my universe it wasn't true.
Is this much different than were we are in understanding the universe? -

Those who get df'd or drift away but don't know.
by sleepy init amazeses me just how many people have stopped going to meetings or get disfellowshiped yet still believe it is the truth and live under a burden of guilt for many years.. should we not be targeting these ones as they one day in a low emotional state will probably drift back to their "mother org"?.
i know of many people who left the truth even for more than 20 years and then went back.. they in all that time never looked at or came across any information to help them.. one of my friends went out of the truth over 10 years ago( he was not baptised), he then started studying about 2 years ago , got baptised a then within a year left again because he realised it was wrong.yet in all that time before he never came across any info to show it wasn't the truth and now has to go through all the hassle of leaving after being baptised.. so is there a way to target those who have left or been disfellowshipped?.
maybe a web site focusing on them?.
-
sleepy
Is this a record for someone driffting away and then coming back?
In my old hall just before I left a man had started to return to the meetings and was giving talks a going on the min.
He had last been to the hall ( and was baptised) BEFORE the second world war and was now back .He was in his middle 70's.
