Spice, it seems like I have very similar views to yours... Agnostic Paganism sounds about right =) When I think in terms of "deities," I call them Mother Earth & Father Sky, but it's not like I consider the "faces" I put on the divine to be universal, or like I really "believe in" these particular ones as being *the* true creators/deities/whatever. Every once in awhile I'll do a ritual, but not that often. I've looked into a lot of Pagan religions, but when all is said & done, I know I'll never be in an organized religion again! None of that scene makes sense to me anymore... Like Sentinel said,
I explore the information available, and take what I need from it, and let the rest be.
And as Pinocchio said,
There are no strings on ME!
Wild Turkey, tyydyy, or anyone who can answer this question for me, what is deism about? Seems like I recall hearing that Thomas Jefferson was a deist. Just curious.

larc,
We don't care about the rest of world. Well, why should we? The Roman Empire and the British Empire didn't care either. Such is life.
OK so you're saying... what? That 2 regimes of history, neither of which had its moral capacity tuned even close to what America's is today, didn't care about the rest of the world, so neither should we? Huh?
Again, why should we? After all, the US is bigger than all of Europe. So, if I learn about Michigan and Indiana, living here in Ohio it is like you poor saps learning about your neighboring countries. So what is the big deal? If we divided up the United States as the world is divided, that would create another 50 countries.
I'm sorry, but this argument is just sad. You can't possibly believe that there is such a wealth of cultural diversity between, say, Louisiana and Texas as there is between, say, Spain and Portugal. If we divided the U.S. into 50 countries, what would we have? 50 little America's, each with its own regional "flavor" to be sure, but each essentially the same, culturally. When we in America learn about folks one state over from us, we're not exactly "gettin' to know a whole 'nother people"...
Do we really care about what you think of us?No.
And this proves what? Similar to the point about not caring about the rest of the world, I think. Not that we should do everything "world opinion" dictates, but why blind ourselves to our own attitudes & actions that have brought world opinion against us? We continue to shamelessly produce consumption, using many times more than our share of the world's resources and pretending pollution doesn't exist, while most "developed" countries (much smaller countries, as you pointed out) in Europe are cutting back and looking for ways to reduce pollution. We don't care about them or what they think about us, and, hey, that's cool. Do we care what we think about ourselves? About our kids, and their kids? Do we want them to be smarter than our parents, or do we want them to piss on the rest of the world and keep saying "everyone wants to live in America, because things are better here than their part of the world"?
Would you like us if you met us one on one. You bet. We are nice people, just like you are, so get off our back.
This is true; individual Americans are nice people, and I think that's been pointed out here quite a few times, but the thread (I thought) was about what other countries think about America, not about individual Americans. And the original post asked for people's opinions of America, so if their opinions include some criticism, get off their backs. Those opinions were provided to the original poster to help with an assignment, not to imply to you "The rest of the world hates YOU, LARC, because you are an AMERICAN."

Diabolical, Isn't it? (New WT "Beroean")
by winsome in"slave organization" re-defines a "beroean" -- ones "willing to believe" without checking scriptures
something very diabolical i believe is going on with the wts.
years ago, when i joined the jw organization, we were encouraged to become a "beroean".

one must be willing to compare any religious instruction he receives with the Scriptures. Can it be proved by the Bible? If not, then reject it.
God's command is: "Make sure of all things.""Prove to yourselves the good and acceptable and complete will of God."
"But does this mean that those Beroeans were looking for flaws in the message they were hearing, or that their attitude was one of doubting? Does this set a precedent for regarding critically the publications brought forth by the faithful and discreet slave, with a view to finding fault? Not at all!...These Beroeans listened with a readiness, yes, an eagerness, to believe. Thus not only were they open-minded, but they were wanting to have this good news proved true. In fact, for a person to acquire faith he must have "the will to believe."
Gag me! Sounds an awful lot like predestination all of a sudden. "Son, to be a sheep, you gots to think like a sheep..."

Spice, 10 years ago I was DISMISSED FROM BETHEL SERVICE for confessing to the secret sins of MASTURBATION and LYING ABOUT MY FIELD SERVICE HOURS!!!
Er, never mind. Not so juicy, in retrospect! Maybe I should go back to the dubs, just so I could have the satisfaction of thinking that once upon a time I was "BAD" ;j

facial hair and dubs
by not interested inthis morning as i was trimming my beard, i was thinking about when i was a drone and the times that iws counseled about my 5:00 shadow at the meetings, and i rembered a time when my dad was told to go and trim his sideburns b 4 he could go on stage at an assembly.. at one time it promted a friend of mine and i to write a letter to the society, since they could change thier minds on doctrinal issues as the light gets brighter we thought maybe we could get them to change thier minds on this issue, (yeah right).
a few months later he recived a letter from the society the essence of it was like this : it would not be inapproiate for a brother to wear a nice trim beard but the elders in the local area would have to detirmin if it would be acceptable for the brother to be used in the cong.
and go door to door, as some areas might be more open to it than others.

hahaha! a low blow, NI, but LOL all the same ;) am I remembering this correctly? isn't the position on beards in the US different from the position on beards in Russia, because of climate & cultural acceptability? & if so, why don't the "Greek Scriptures" speak out on beards, since those writers lived in Roman times, and Romans favored the clean-shaven look? & who here could possibly say they've never seen a beard that "looks good," whereas *every* mustache they've ever seen was acceptable?
one more man-made rule

Even children are going bad... The Bible said that in the "last days" children would be "disobedient to parents." -2Timothy 3:2
the message? "children are going bad." no blame to parents or society as a whole, they're just being "disobedient to parents." i dunno, genetic manipulation a la Farkel's "original sin for dummies" posts? doesn't seem to make much sense; just write it off as another sign of the last days.
since they specifically point out that children are being "disobedient" i assume they're REALLY talking about children of the rank&file, trying to comfort the "believers" on the loss of their kids to "false religion" or "worldly teachings."

MrMoe & others, I too am very patriotic about the USA, but not so much about its current state as I am about the circumstances of its founding, about the constitution, about what it's "suppposed" to stand for and so on...
The comments are well taken about the US poking its nose in everywhere, while showing constant hypocrisy in foreign affairs (trade=engagement, which is good, in human-rights-weak Communist China, whereas trade=support for suppression of human rights, which is bad, in human-rights-weak Communist Cuba)... I think it's all too evident that our major concerns with the rest of the world are money & oil, which is exploitative & sad. By now, we could be decades along in the process of weaning ourselves off of fossil fuels; instead we have a President who can't decide whether he believes humans contribute to global warming or not.
I'm not one who generally gives in to conspiracy theories... But our government has become very weak, and morally corrupt, when it comes to money and oil. I think it's self-evident that the folks who founded this country were, for the most part, heroic, self-sacrificing, moral people... I just wish I could say the same for today's leaders.
