What would happen to a JW for celebrating Christmas?
by Vanderhoven7 inmark jones writes:.
if they were spied upon and it was reported to the elders they’d be “invited” to a judicial committee whereupon they’d be cross examined in a locked backroom by three men acting as judge and jury to decide if they are guilty.. .
if the elders decide that they are guilty, they’ll then decide if the person is sorry.

The Question of the "Great Apostasy" and the Historical Continuity of Christianity
by aqwsed12345 in1. the continuity and visibility of the church.
the true church must be continuous from the apostolic age.
there is no room in christianity for a "gap" or interruption of thousands of years during which true christianity ceased to exist and then was revived in the form of another movement.

Can you recommend a website or book about the part of Jewish history you mention? I am not familiar with it , would like to educate myself a bit better.

Child Sacrifice and Exodus 22:29
by joey jojo inim not a bible scholar - lets just get that out the way first.
i recently came across exodus 22:29, which is an interesting scripture that seems to require israelites to sacrifice their firstborn to god.. i searched this forum and cant seem to find any topic about it so i thought id start one and see what you guys think.
im sure it probably has been discussed here already, but i cant find it.. anyway, exodus 22:29 says:.

This is an interesting read about Jephthah. The writer of Judges doesn't say how God received the sacrifice, but the explanation above seems sensible.
Jephthah doesn't come across as someone who actually knew the God of Israel, he was an outsider, the High Priest should have annulled the vow as unlawful under the Mosaic Law, but he didn't.

Where Adam and Eve Vegan/Vegetarian?
by KerryKing injws seem to firmly believe that before the flood mankind eas vegan or at least vegetarian.. however, in gen 1:24,25 it says that god created livestock (domestic animals) and beasts of the eart (wild beasts).. why would adam and eve need livestock if they were vegan and naked?
wouldn't need wool or hide for clothing, nor meat for food.
possibly for dairy products only?

Suspending our critical mind to enter the stories to try to feel what the author intended is not the same thing as dismissing the stories as worthless 'lies.
Your explanation above actually makes a lot more sense of the visions that came with the prophecies, as in, all this debate about dates and beasts with or without horns is maybe entirely off the mark.

I had not heard of the second version of Genesis, thanks for that, I'll have some fun digging that up!

Yes the WT doesn't support one way or another, although their paradise pictures do, but a lot of JWs believe the vegetarian theme, I remember some saying enjoy your meat now you won't get it in the new system lol.

Jws seem to firmly believe that before the flood mankind eas vegan or at least vegetarian.
However, in Gen 1:24,25 it says that God created livestock (domestic animals) and beasts of the eart (wild beasts).
Why would Adam and Eve need livestock if they were vegan and naked? Wouldn't need wool or hide for clothing, nor meat for food. Possibly for dairy products only? That also poses a problem as every farmer knows, roughly 50% of births will be males, they're useless to dairy herds so they need to be culled, can't release them because they won't survive in the wild, they still have to be shorn, hoofs maintained etc to keep healthy. Domestic animals need mankind, and mankind needs domestic animals, by design.
Abel was a shepherd, Gen 2:2-4, and sacrificed animals to God, so mankind was familiar with killing beasts. He also knew to sacrifice the fatty pieces because that was considered the best cut of meat, how did he know that was the best? Did God say give me the fat it's my favourite? Or was Abel familiar with the meat and it's various cuts and flavours? Imo logic will go with the latter option.
Noah and family were granted to eat all the animals of the earth and creatures of the sea and birds Gen 9:2,3, but the animals would now be afraid of mankind. To me this means that Noah was now given permission to hunt, they could eat wild animals as well as livestock.
But wid animals would run away, whereas livestock are not afraid of their shepherds and carers.
I believe the reason for this was because post flood the land was saturated and it would take at least a year for crops to be seeded and grow, probably longer because of the condition of the land. Wild animals often reproduce faster than livestock, so would be a quicker and steadier source of food.
I think JWs wave away these logical reasonings in favour of fairy tales, but i really don't think the Garden of Eden was a fairy tale at all.

Is 1st Century advice on marriage still relevant in today’s modern world?
by liam inrepublicans want to make a law that forbids ‘uncontested divorce”.
they based this on this scripture.. matthew 19. is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”.
4 “haven’t you read,” jesus replied, “that at the beginning the creator ‘made them male and female,’and said, ‘for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’ so they are no longer two, but one flesh.

They don't allow whole blood transfusions but do allow fractions in all variations, so technically they do allow blood transfusions.

Sad observation
by Gorb inreading about jw.org rules changes these days gives me a sad observation.. everything what "is" today, can be gone tomorrow.. that makes it all worthless.
you were an elder, searching for evidence, and proof to df a person.
because he or she was not humble enough.

You're absolutely right. When I was dfd coz I couldn't be arsed to toe the line, I did figure I'd be back within the year.
I was warned by family that'd I'd 'be devoured' out there in the wicked world.
Immediately on leaving I found the most genuine caring people. The WT wants us to believe that everyone is evil, even if they seem ok. What a far cry from Jesus way of talking about and treating people, like lost sheep, not evil snakes!!
After 15 years out I can honestly say I have not come across any other group of people as gossippy, slanderous, clicky and judgemental as the JWs.
