i've been studying the bible with a jehovah's witness in my town, and i'm rather enjoying it.. but why do so many people hate the jw's.. i've researched on my own and have come to the conclusion that they are right on most accounts including the trinity, blood, nationalism... etc.... and the more arguments i hear against the more i'm drawn into believing what they stand for.. and every argument i've seen in support of the things jw's are against the more i think the jw's are right.. so why are they so bad?

DF, I was where you are once. You still have time to walk away, which means that you're in an excellent position. I wish that someone had told me this before I decided to get baptized. So, I'm telling you now what I wish I had known.

When you first start studying, everything looks so sensible and Scriptural and perfect, and it seems to obvious that what you're learning is the Truth. But just give it a few more years. Wait until after you've been baptized and all of the unwritten rules kick in. If you're really determined to be a good, faithful JW like I was, there's a pretty decent chance that your life will end up being ruled by guilt and fear and a feeling of never measuring up, and you'll end up blaming yourself. You'll hate yourself. You'll believe that Satan is lurking under every rock and tree. You'll sink into a chronic depression that could last for years, and you'll blame it on "this system" or your own inherent corruption. And if you really ARE like me, you'll end up wishing you were dead.

That's the abridged version of my JW experience, which I thankfully ended over a year ago. If you'd like the long version, please e-mail me. But just believe me when I say that you never really know what you're getting into with the JWs until it's too late to change your mind without being punished by them for it. Yes, there are some people who are perfectly and genuinely happy living their lives as Witnesses. But you would be surprised to know how many there are who are just like I was, always wearing a smiling mask to hide the misery they felt to avoid "damaging Jehovah's reputation." After all, letting outsiders see that not all JWs are happy (and that many are depressed) could make potential converts like you realize that "Jehovah's Organization" is really nothing special.

In other words, my friend, consider the path that you've chosen very, very carefully before you make any commitments.

Truth hurts

i can't believe it's all a sham!

remember before i was baptized, i wondered onto a hostile site and felt a sickening dread, when i confronted the sister who studied with me she reassured me that i shouldn't worry, all the stuff on those sites are written by bitter outcasts who have nothing constructive to offer, "after all", she said, ""did you ever read anything upbuilding there?

I agree that all of us should contemplate more positive issues and discuss those here more. I agree that we should try to upbuild each other with positive experiences, thoughts and directions our lives have taken.

I agree with your agreement. To take a concept from The Matrix (everyone's favorite movie ), not everyone is ready to be unplugged. For some, finding out the truth about "The Truth" can be devastating, and the loss of that security can be even more damaging to them psychologically than their lack of freedom while they were in the Borg. If nothing better is offered to fill the void... bad things can happen. Very bad things.

*scratches her head* Really? I walked away well over a year ago, and I can honestly say that I don't feel any bitterness at all towards the JWs. I was angry at first over having wasted about seven years of my life, but I got over it. Now, I'm simply grateful that that episode is over, and that I can finally explore who I really am and what I want from life without feeling like the secret police are looking over my shoulder, or like God will kill me Real Soon Now for some unnamed transgression.

I hang around here because I'm nosy, and because I like to help people when they make it clear they want to be helped. Other than that, though, I'm sort of... apathetic towards the whole thing. I have my own life to live without being "filled with vitriolic bitterness" over how others choose to live theirs. I've seen enough of human nature to know that people can't be changed until they're ready to change themselves, and that some never change at all.

Naive and/or stupid as it may have been for this JW woman to invite a convicted murderer into her home, she really didn't deserve that fate. Even more than that, though, her family and friends didn't deserve to lose her in such a horrible way.

But you know what's even worse? This awful incident will probably end up in a future Awake! as a sterling example of "remaining loyal to the end," complete with words of praise from the dead woman's family.

What do you think of Seeker (good or bad)?

reading farkel's thoughts about being called names, and remembering my own discouragement about the same thing, and thinking about all the posts recently decrying the fighting and bad language, i'm curious to know how my "seeker" persona is perceived here.

i know i have fought with some, made friends with others, so how i am perceived will be varied.

i want to know it all, the good, the bad, the ugly.

Concerning Innateness

the other day, one of my distinguished interlocutors contended that if joelbear says he is innately gay, then he is innately gay.

it seems that my interlocutor is saying the following.. 1) s verbally claims that his sexual orientation is innate.

I really do not want to answer some of your questions for the sake of my concealed identity.

I understand. I've just always been interested in finding out why people are the way they are. *g* If I hadn't been a JW at the time, I might've majored in psychology instead of English, or at least made it my minor.

If you can tell me, what kinds of books do you read? And what kind of music do you like to listen to? I'm into sci-fi and fantasy (sometimes, I also read stuff on psychology, sociology and any other "ologies" that catch my fancy), and my favorite music right now seems to be alternative and hard rock.

Feeling So Alone

You're not alone. You have thousands of friends who you don't even know, and you've come to the right place to find them.

I've been through the "depression thang" myself (it lasted for years, and I still have problems sometimes), and I know how it can make you feel as though life is ugly and meaningless. But if you stick it out, things DO eventually get better. And... I also know from experience how JW life can often make it worse.

Dunsscot, just out of curiosity, what do you do for a living? And if you're not already doing what you want to do for a living, what are your future plans? Since you're in grad school, what are you majoring in? (If you've said it before, I probably missed it, sorry.) And besides posting here, what do you do for fun?
