That's my estimate of Icke, he was good on telly on a Saturday afternoon though.

what do you consider to be the most stupid rules or tradition of the jw lives?
im thinking about any kind of rule or regulative that only has one answer to the questions why:.
Here's another silly rule that is regionally biased and based on individual's whims.
Rule # 65633 -- Brothers must wear a jacket on the platform. (See rule # 76777 and 76885 for rules on type of jackets)
One Thursday evening it was extremely hot (mid 80's) which was unusual for England and English KH's don't have air conditioning. An elder asks me my opinion, "would you have any problem with allowing the brothers giving talks tonight the option of leaving their jackets off?" "Not at all" I replied.
This elders asks all the other 5 elders the same question. All but one agree except one who is adamant that brothers should wear jackets on the platform. So relaxing the rule was abandoned.
Who makes up these rules? Why are the rules different in other countries?
Another rule that niggled the same elder. The way brothers and sisters should be addressed when called upon to answer a question. The official rule is "brother last-name". The School Conductor in one congregation always addressed bros and sis' as "brother/sister first-name". The same brother also frequently wore a blue blazer with grey slacks and broke the matching jacket and pants rule.
Strange hey, this is the religion that's supposed to agree with Jesus' criticism of the Pharisees!

i was in the town this morning and saw a little cluster of jws leaving the kingdom hall, clutching their ministry bags, eager to go out into the field service.... well, maybe eager isnt quite the right word.... anyway, i thought to myself - how many people will they convert today?

If it has taken a US based religion more than a 100 years to shake out a million righteous ones out of 280 million Americans how long will it be to get the "good" ones out of China? Until China is thoroughly covered down to every last "not-at-home" the work will have to go on.
As for effectivness, less than 300,000 get baptized each year out a billion hours spent knocking doors, standing on street corners and informally talking to relatives. Do the math. How many years does the average Joe Witness have to put in to get one convert?

ok, america, this is it.
you have got to start learning english english at some point or another, after all, us brits are having to learn american english to be able to understand all those films (movies) about how you saved our arses (butts) during the 1939 -1945 (1941 - 1945) war.. now we all know the obvious ones, such as you calling a car bonnet the hood, the boot is the trunk and a spanner being a wrench etc etc.
plus the fact that you eat fries instead of chips and spread mayo instead of butter.

Me and Mrs Thirdson enjoy a bit of the British and American...
It's interesting what phrases I had to adapt to and what to give up. However, at home I can revert to more Brit speak and humor. Mrs Thirdson knows what I mean about the frustration of running out of "bog-roll" when sat on the "bog". At work recently I requested a PC be installed for testing and development in the manufacturing area and I requested a "bog-standard" PC, nothing fancy. I had to explain my British term. (I have heard "box-standard" is the correct terminology but having grown up in Birmingham based engineering companies "bog-standard" is what I heard which I always thought related to the toilet bowl manufacturer's name on many British toilets being "Standard {Vitrified Products}" and hence as common and ordinary as toilet bowls.)
Another Brit favorite food derived from Italy is "Spag-bog"
Mrs Thirdson (like me) spent some time in Australia as a kid and her mom still uses ozzie terms. Them pesky biting insects are "mozzies", sunglasses are "sunnies" are some I can recall.
My son is thoroughly Anglo-American. Despite living in the US for nearly half his short life (he's 13) he still has a noticeably English accent except when in England when he has a noticeably American accent...but he sounds the same to me where ever he is!

My heart goes out to you. Remember, funerals are for the survivors not just for burying the dead. You may have made a pact but the reality of this loss means you need to do what is right for you right now. So you break a promise, I am sure your friend will/would forgive you for needing to be there.

anyway, one thing i always missed were the holidays-christmas especially.
i know that this is an unproven celebration to say the least, but i have always loved the warmth and beauty of this holiday, although very commercialized in this day and age.

Since my wife and in-laws are not and never were JWs I have come to know what holidays are all about. Christmas and Thanksgiving are my favorites. They are great occasions for the family to get together and a good excuse to celebrate.
When I was a JW I thought holidays were special in a way, not that we celebrated (much) but at least the enforced holiday got the family together. It's even better now and I enjoy my wife's family's traditions and glad to be an accepted member of her family.

The stupidest rule I ever came across was invented by an elder named Burke, Burke by name and berk by nature. His rule was that everyone attending his book study (at his home) wear slippers. At most UK groups I attended people just took their shoes off. Burke objected to sisters slipping their shoes off at the KH and hence regarded his home on Tuesday nights as a KH too. Not everyone remembered to bring slippers but his rule was the brother reading the paragraphs had to wear slippers.
On one occasion the only brother present other than Burke forgot his slippers. Burke had a dilemma. It was either have a slipper clod sister read the paragraphs or this stocking feet only brother. He resolved it by providing the brother with a pair of old, smelly, paint covered slipers to wear while reading. Thus Jehovah was appeased and clod in holy footwear the meeting was completed.
Bizarre, but true. The smelly slipper wearing brother is a relative of mine.

the three articles in the watchtower of 8/15/01 on the life of abraham take a real stretch of a biblical story in order to impose watchtower rules.
on page 27, paragraph 8 the watchtower tries to make that point that many jws inflict themselves with many trials because they strive for material riches.
that may be true but equally many face trials just trying to make a living or are trying to cope with retirement on a very limited income.

My father had nothing saved for retirement until the last 12 years of his working life when he changed jobs and joined an electrical utility. The company pension plan combined with the share offering given to employees when the nationally owned company was privatized means my parents have a little more than the state pension. They are lucky!
To be honest, I was just the same as others brought up believing the "new system" was just around the corner. I declined an investment/retirement plan 15 years ago telling the guy that I didn't believe the world's banking system was going to last much longer. (I was so You Knowish!) I doubt the UK government will give me a pension for the 16 years I was paying taxes...they don't let me vote in UK elections. I nearly have enough points with the US dept of social security to qualify for Medicare when I am old but otherwise what I expect to retire on is my own investments.
The ever increasing delay in "the end" is going to cause serious problems for the aging members (as Zazu related) of the JW unless they wise-up to the reality that the WTS's promises are not worth a dime.
