Publication Authors?
by Shepherd Book inthis is my first post here ever.
i was hoping some may be able to tell me the author(s) of any of the watchtower books - especially those from the last couple of decades.
if you can back it up with anything, that'd be great, too.. thanks..

While it's no doubt true that most of the members of the New World Translation Comittee had no training in Greek, I'm assuming that Gangas had received fairly extensive training in Biblical Greek. He was from Greece and it would be very hard for anyone who went to school in Geece to avoid studying the Greek of Homer or the New Testament. They're very proud of their linguistic heritage.

From 1 to 10, What's the JW morale right now?
by JH inif you could give a score from 1 to 10, 1 being the lowest, what do you think is the morale of the average witness right now, considering that not much that they predicted happened by now.. i would give them a 4, considering their new tract that came out recently, that might make them more optimistic that the end is closer..

In my experience different dubs are at various stages. Newbies are pumped (8,9), some oldtimers are holding steady(5,6), others are discouraged after years of unfulfilled expectations (2-4). Ocasionally the more established ones are discouraged over slights by other members, some valid and some just petty. These latter hit the 2-4 range prematurely.
As long as the Watchtower can keep large numbers of enthused, animated people coming in, they can keep the oldtimers prone to discouragement bouyed up. My gut feeling is that recent flip-flops, slowing growth and no end in sight is causing an increase in the 2-4 crowd and taking the edge off many 8-9s. I'm sure the overall number is a point or two lower than when I was in (1980s).

Back from my short trip with JW friend........what would you say to this?
by whyizit ini (a non-jw) went on a trip with my friend ( who is a long-time jw study) over the weekend.
i thought she might use it as an opportunity to try to seduce me into the wts view.
she never mentioned it once.

I think that's a great response. Cultivate it, support her without being overtly anti-JW. When she complains, sympathize. I think it's great for you to subtly equate the elders with the pharisees (not hard to do in some congregations). A study can feel isolated from family and friends (JWs are shooting for this). You have to have someone in your life, and if they can cut you off from everyone else, what other option exists? If you're there for her, she's got a far better chance.

Interesting topic.
I can confirm that higher-ups can sometimes face a loss of privileges for otherwise serious sins. I wish I knew details, but the person who told me (the CO) told me in hushed tones and was short on details. We had had an elder do something (can't remember what) that seemed to merit judicial action, but was somewhat borderline (I look back now in amazement at how legalistic we were!) The CO said that he knew of a fellow CO who got involved in something he shouldn't have with a sister and was given the choice (no choice really) of face a commitee or be demoted to elder back in his former congregation. I was a little disturbed to be honest. Being an elder definitely caused me to question the 'truth'.

Placing Publications - The Reality
by Joe Grundy ini'm not, never have been, a jw, etc.. a couple of months ago, on a mb entirely unconnected with religion a poster told of her concerns that her pre-teen step-daughter had started to study (with her mother) with jws.. the poster knew nothing of jws - her concern was because her step-daughter had asked her not to tell her husband (the girl's father) of this and keep it secret.
(apparently the mother had previously had connections with jws and the father was not happy with this).. i posted on that mb, mentioned some concerns, and later got into e-mail contact with the step-mother.
i put together a brief note about some history of the jws, some concerns i had (mainly gathered from reading jwd) and sent it to her, just to make her aware of what she may be dealing with.

Joe,
You should get baptized and then come out as an appostate. Why be satisfied with 'honorary' status?

I did a master's in linguistics. It does take tremendous self-discipline. But you can study when you want. I would say that it's just as tough in terms of coursework and writing papers. Sounds to me like computer information could be done just as easily online. It also tends to be a little cheaper.

I feel sorry for the guy. I was an elder and remember feeling guilty about "wrong" desires and thoughts. They're going to make it impossible to be an elder soon.
The only ones left qualifying will be the real hard asses who have no sympathy for anyone. -

The faithlessness here
by grissom6471 init is a shame that people are here portraying themselves as jehovah's witness as having some knowlege or going to meetings.
what exists here is a complete lack of faith in anything.
and a great amount of stupidity.

Faith is dangerous, it causes people to hijack planes and fly them into buildings IIt moves JWs to let their children bleed to death. Cultivate reason; it will serve you better.
