  i am inclined to start this thread in response to some comments made in other threads.

  i have been coming around these forum for quite some time now so whatever you find in here is not just related to something someone may have said this week.

  it can go months back as well.. i have seen many who claim to respect the belief of others but when it comes down to applying it into practice, things take a whole different tune.

  The Rebel, I loved your StarTrek question. That is a perfect example of the type of essay question a teacher might create in order to assess knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of different thinking styles.

  Sometimes teachers assess student knowlege on a given subject by asking them to create an "assessment" and answer key. This requires higher level thinking skills, metacognition, if you will.

  It's been interesting watching your thinking skills transform, Rebel.

  And, props to Viviane who did a great job of providing an example of how to answer a question such as that. Very key, providing examples.

  Handing out candy

  growing up my parents would barricade our home off by parking vehicles bumper to bumper - you would have to crawl under the cars or over the bumpers to get to our door.

  also, we would turn off all the lights and hide in the back room away from the street.. that was the norm for me.

  isnt that insane?

  And for the first time my 14 year old son went roaming the neighborhood with friends. He put on overalls, drew on a beard with a sharpie and grabbed a lantern so he looked like a train conductor.

  They found a street where people had haunted yards and haunted houses and they scared themselves silly then went to a friend's house. We called him at 10 pm. The girls were having a sleepover, so we had to extract the boys. He came home with a whole pillowcase full of candy and seemed very satisfied with his haul.

  Surely everyone will be talking about this in school on Monday. Lunches will be good for the next week with all the extra candy.

  We gave away less candy than usual. A lot of people went out to parties last night. Then, we finally ended up with a party of our own with people in the house and sitting by a bonfire in the front yard!

  The trick-or-treaters were not too excited when my husband first offered them celery, you should have seen their wide eyes! Then, we had a laugh and offered them candy from the candy bowl or a small toy from the toy bowl. Some parents thanked us for having toys because their kids were allergic to some candies.

  Suck it, LA! We just took over the title for having the worst traffic in the USA. :(

  But, the Chesapeake Bay is beautiful and makes up for that, somewhat. :)

  grew up in east la in a bad neighborhood to a black mother and white father.

  i never knew my father because he died in a car accident when i was a few weeks old.

  my mother converted as a jw soon after when two sisters came to her door and offered her comfort, which was something she needed.

  Well, you've learned the truth about the truth at a young age, so congratulations, you're in a much better position than many on this board that have wasted decades before they realized the truth.

  Also, I totally respect you for caring so much about your mother's feelings. The sad thing is that she is trauma-bonded with the religion. It's the thing that gave her solace when she was going through a very difficult time.

  However, she made a bad decision. The people she trusted hurt you. Does she know this? Maybe she should be made aware.

  Her reaction could go in any number of ways. She could be angry or she could disbelieve or it could entrench her further.

  At any rate, why protect her from the knowledge of her own bad decision?

  I think it is hurting you more than you know.

  for all those who have recently escaped this evil cult i just want to send a message of hope.. i have just had my landlord around.

  one of the first things the landlord said to me.

  My First Birthday.....

  i awoken today and realised immidiately i'm 44 today... and after 3 years of being out, decided to acknowledge my birthday.... i'm off out to treat myself to a big hearty breakfast with cup of tea in the local weatherspoon's by the massive pond full of weird bird-life, later today i'm giving myself a gift of a 90 minute relaxation session in a float tank down by canary wharf in london.... only really have 2 close friends (it's a slow process trusting people agian) and they probably won't be able to see me today, but i'm sure i'll have a belated surprise from them both.... the first thing i did when i remembered was to rush to the computer, connect to the web and put on stevie wonder's 'happy birthday', as i listen to it, tears stream down my face... all those years of my life stolen ' but..... i'm free....'.

  Well, since it's your first birthday, I guess you can get away with just one candle in the cake. My husband is just a couple years older than you and his last cake...well, the first candles were melted by the time the last candle was lit!

  Glad you had a lovely day. The years are precious. We need to celebrate them.

  world news daily has a die-hard right-wing bias.

  so, in an effort to get real information, i'm asking my european exjw's, is this article all true?

  Goodwill stores: A gathering place for Jehovahs Witnesses.

  i recently started working at a goodwill here in wisconsin, and i've never encountered more witnesses ever in my life.

  every time i go to work, i see at least two or three people that i used to go to the kingdom hall with getting suits, dresses, etc.

  some of them say hi, but some of them i just ignore, or they ignore me.

  We had to always shop the sales racks for clothes. Sometimes you could go into a nice store and find a clearance rack where things had been marked down multiple times. You didn't get the greatest selection, but some of the stuff was decent. I still use this trick today to round out my wardrobe.

  What I felt like I never had enough of was shoes. My dad believed that you got one pair of dress shoes for summer and one pair for winter. Then, you got one pair of athletic shoes and a separate pair of sturdy school shoes. No cute little girl flats or other cute shoes that a girl might like. I feel like if we didn't have to spend money on dress shoes that I could have had decent shoes for everyday.

  I had it better than my sister, though, who got stuck with a lot of my hand-me-downs. I remember one time getting a box of hand-me-downs from a family at the hall and that's the only time.

  Now once my baby brother was the only one left at home, they could afford to buy him pretty much what he wanted.
