baby showers are acceptable, but not birthdays.. correct me if i am incorrect, but doesn't the bible say to "honor the father and mother of your youth", yet mothers day and fathers day are unacceptable to celebrate.
Oh, I forgot to mention that anniversaries are okay because only the husband and wife usually get together on their anniversary. Thereby avoiding the evil influence of worldly family members. It does'nt matter that anniversaries have more pagan roots than birthday's.

The reason they don't celebrate Fathers' day or Mothers' day is because people tend to get together w/ worldly relatives during those times, and they want the rank and file to be seperate from family because they may turn you against the "truth". Same goes for all the other holiday's or birthdays.

my jw neighbor wasn't able to come on monday after all, but we rescheduled our meeting for today (wednesday).
on monday, i had a bit of material around, and my next-door neighbor stopped in.
i found out that she was in a bible study with some jws!
You may ultimately get to the brick wall when she say's; "Who else is using God's name?, and who else is preaching the good news of the kingdom?, all the rest does'nt matter". I hope your neighbor does'nt go there with you. Not that you can't easily refute those statements, but that's the wall I usually hit.

galatians opens with the direction to not listen to opposing religious views.
it goes so far as to say that even if they (ostensibly paul and his party) or an angel from heaven presents another opinion, they must refuse to listen even then condemning the messenger as an enemy.
ironically this very obstinance is condemned among the jews in the bible, when they supposedly refused to listen to the new direction from the christians,jesus and even the angels who according to the story announced this new faith's arrival.
So everytime the society changes its mind or tune, JWs should consider them enemies...but that is not how they tell it, is it?

after my brother-in-law left bethel, he got a "worldly" girlfriend.
the local jws wanted to know if he was living with her or not.
so they got the city overseer to spy on him.
I flicked a cigarette butt out the window of my car at a group going out in service from my cong. It is a miracle they either did'nt notice the smoldering tobacco stick, or they did'nt notice ME. If they would have known it was me they would have approached me about it. Whewwww...That was a close one, but funny when I think about it. I've since kicked the habit btw. Which leads me to ask; What would the elders do if I told 'em that I went through a period of smoking, but then I quit and have refrained from puffing the offensive fags since? What do you think?

as a jehovahs witness, our lives were clearly "defined".
for those of us who are no longer in the "truth", what "drives" your life now?.
for me, it is my kids ( 12, 9, 4--busy--busy--busy) ; my wife; my career; i live by my own personal value system ( tried, tested and working).. the absence of the superimposed restrictive grid of the jw lifestyle has allowed my life to blossom.
