Nice post. Thanks. I'll bet if I saw the rest of the list one thing would be on it: Counting one's blessings each day or often and placing other things in the proper perspective.

Scientific basis for the belief that prayer helps!
by exWTslave indear reader, millions of americans believe prayer works.
yet the mainstream media tends to avoid the subject altogether.but our mind health report team at newsmax health wanted answers to questions like these:can modern science explain prayer?does praying strengthen your brain and prevent mental decline?what benefits, if any, does prayer offer you physically, mentally, and emotionally?to this end, the team went out to the scientific and medical community to learn the potential benefits of prayer and what they found both surprised and excited all of us here at the mind health report.the results were so startling, in fact, we created a free video presentation to share with you exactly what we discovered.when you watch this free video, youll discover how prayer actually changes four distinct areas of your brain.
in fact, youll see exactly how prayer or other spiritual practices increase activity in the areas of your brain that are most helpful to you, and diminish activity in areas that are less helpful or even harmful.youll also see:how a specific amount of prayer time per day can help prevent memory loss, mental decline, and even dementia or alzheimers .

Nice OP. Interestingly, the fact that prayer 'works' is one of the first things that caused me to question the Borg and then the existence of god. It may have been the first thing (it has been a while). There was good science several decades ago suggesting that prayer had a positive health impact. However, and this is the point that caused me to begin my Pink Floyd sojoun (another brick in the wall of my theism being removed): prayer 'works' regardless of which god one is praying to, including whether the 'god' is a rock, a pole or an imaginary creature in the heavens. All that matters is the one praying 'believed' or placed their psychological selves in a calmer more restful state.
Buddhist chants do the same thing only a lot better.

Snare,
Excellent! I'm proud of you. I'm a couple of years behind and it will be a PhD rather than an MD, but you are an inspiration. Now go to sleep!

And CS, the gaul, hypocrisy and narcissim you show is off the charts. We attack you? I think we attacked your ridiculous premise. So it's OK for you to paint with a broad brush, condeming atheists as useless and immoral and providing nothing of value to society, but THAT is acceptable????? What kind of delusional narcissist are you, anyway? I suggest a new strategy, R2: stay within theist only posts and avoid others. Stay away from the keyboard; you can do it. I know you can.

It would be nice if people who make definitive statements about things which they know little or nothing and especially after their nonsense has been proven erroneous could exercise some restraint. Avoid the keyboard. You can do it. Or acknowledge you were wrong (exercise some of the Xtian humility). Both would be preferable. Now stick your head firmly back in the sand. Or . . .

Viviane,
I noticed CS did not directly respond to the data referenced by Snare or my comments about it. I suppose if you put your head deep enough in the sand (or your own ass), such things as facts will magically go away. He has been on this site long enough, and has likely read and participated in these dicussions numerous times, where he knows that the definifinivie statements he makes are typically not supported by the facts. He has to know. The only thing I can come up with as to why he and others like him continue to spew nonsense is because: a. facts are scary and best avoided; b. he and others like him think that they can slip in their bits of nonsense and all the atheists wil be on vacation; or c. a combination of the above.
We continue to have the same mindless dicussions with theists; and they don't ever seem to get it. Just once I would like to see one of them say: "Oh, I see Snare, so being decent, kind, honest and ethical, based on the very good data you have presented, hasn't a rip to do with religion." You have enlightened me. Thank you so very much."

CS,
I have cited the study referenced by Snare, and others like it, before on this forum. The nonsense you spewed is absent factual basis. Study after study reveals the more religious a state, country or region, the more dysfunctional it is, and the less religious the more functional. This data is readily available to you, but you do what nearly all the theists do on this site. You run your mouth, making definitive statements, about things which you know little or nothing. Your mindset is what traps you in your theistic beliefs; you 'feel' or 'believe' something, perhaps even strongly, without any true knowledge or evidence to support. That's fine, but I do wish you would learn some self control and stay away from the keyboard. But if you really want to play this game, I have a lot of data ready and available. Not that it would matter. Other than your 'feelings' and 'belliefs', you got nuthin".

Bath, excellent, excellent post. I use Maslow's hierarchy of needs a lot in my classes to help explain behaviors. For the leaders I believe narcissism and ego play a huge role. They simply cannot believe all of the tripe they spew. But no one wants to give up power and control, whether its a Boy Scout leader, a preacher, a CEO, the coach of a team, or the Borg's leadership. Power and control are the ultimate aphrodisiacs and ego/narcissism.

Is it true that elders lurk the forums?
by make yourself init seems like it is one huge contradiction.

For example, a well responded to post may get 10 to 20 times the number of views as posts. Granted, some of those 'views' are from posters, so the 'science' is at best fuzzy. However, note this post. Only 27 posts but over 1500 views. It would be of major interest to lurking Borgians, likely not so much to those who have been out for over a year or two. Hi y'all!!!!
